“Saving Rock & Roll One Kid at a Time”

Want to play volcanic guitar riffs like Hendrix, stroke a bass like Flea, bang a snare drum like John Bonham, or chant poetic melodies like Bono? If this describes you, or even more importantly, your children, then Coral Springs has an ideal facility for your family. The Paul Green School of Rock Music is successful in bringing rock and roll to the suburbs, adding an extraordinary gift to our children’s lives.

Utilizing the slogan, “Saving Rock & Roll One Kid at a Time,” the school offers youngsters between the ages of 7 and 18 more than a musical education. Kids come once a week for a 45-minute private session on the instrument of their choice. They teach guitar, bass, drum, keyboard, sax and vocal lessons. Participants then meet for a weekly 3-hour rehearsal with the instructors’ interactive guidance. Kids also get to take part in song writing seminars, attend workshops and hear celebrity guest speakers. Then they are encouraged to come back throughout the week just to practice.
The very first School of Rock kicked off in 1998 in Philadelphia by music teacher Paul Green, the President. The man started a program for underprivileged kids with super talent to get scholarships all over the country. Green’s story later inspired the 2003 gonzo comedy of the same name with Jack Black starring as the main instructor. These days, there’s a corporate School of Rock in Kendall. The management feels that Coral Springs is an ideal location. “It’s an eccentric area and has so many kids joining local bands. Our School of Rock is merely trying to help them realize their potential as true artists by jamming on professional equipment with their peers,” said Susan Cobb, General Manager.

It’s not a competition, but it’s good for the children to push one another. And before long, they’re onstage at real concerts at high-class venues to respectable audiences. Cobb is full of colorful stories about her short time watching kids get turned on by playing real instruments. For example, there was the new student who refused to go to bed without his newly discovered drumsticks. “We teach the good stuff, from the Beatles to Radiohead. They simply love it.”

School of Rock plans to start hosting a quarterly Parents Night. But in the mean time, there’s no need for the adults to feel left out of the fun. The School of Rock Music has a 12-week “Grad” program in both private lesson and group settings for anyone 19 or older. Similarly, “Kinderock” is offered for those between the ages of 4 and 6.

The basic curriculum is old school classic rock. In the future, School of Rock will put together an AC/DC show, along with the Fab Four and Led Zeppelin. But Pink Floyd’s The Wall will be their very first presentation in May or June. The team plans to recreate the epic at either the Culture Room or Revolution. Beyond making posters and selling tickets to the big event, the cast will learn about being part of a band. And then there’s how to market your crew and create a draw. It’s all part of the curriculum.

Besides how to be involved with the community, everybody learns the exciting side of the music business. They teach how to turn it all into an actual career. And the School of Rock keeps going. Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale and Pembroke Pines can expect franchise branches fairly soon. “We encourage the kids to come here, hang out and rehearse at anytime we are open,” stated Cobb. “Everyone here is shining. We haven’t had a single dropout yet.”

The whole point of The Paul Green School of Rock Music isn’t to add to the big business of the music industry. It’s about making a difference in children’s lives. They are all very aware of how privileged they are to participate in the program. Every kid wants to be a rock star.

About PAUL GREEN SCHOOL OF ROCK MUSIC

In, 1998, the University of Pennsylvania graduate in philosophy founded the PAUL GREEN SCHOOL OF ROCK MUSIC. Green single-handedly grew the School of Rock's reputation immensely over the next half decade, not only drawing significant media attention from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, but also seeing his creation become the apparent inspiration for the Jack Black full-length hit comedy, School of Rock, as well as the subject of the acclaimed A&E documentary film, ROCK SCHOOL. To date, with over 40 schools operating nationally, Green's students have played over 350 concerts to more than 100,000 people at legendary venues around the world. The primary goal is to foster a new generation of incredible musicians by exposing the students to classic rock amid a stimulating, interactive school environment.

Students receive weekly private lessons on their choice of guitar, drums, bass, keyboards, and/or vocal instruction and also participate in weekly supervised rehearsals with their peers. The combination of private lessons and group band practice has proven to be a very effective method is motivating kids to practice hard, overcome stage fright, and become amazing musicians. The school operates an open, rolling admissions process for the spring, summer, and fall seasons throughout the year.
