"We brings kids together who have a passion for music, and they have a place to go. They can take individual lessons, but what really makes us different is the group rehearsals that bring musicians together. By forming a band, they learn life skills, such as team building, self-confidence and presenting themselves in front of people. They're learning life skills in addition to music. That's the culture I'm building at my school. They learn to be amazing musicians, but they also are learning to become a great person too. That's our philosophy: Inspiring the world to rock on stage and in life."

CEO, School of Rock

Dzana Homan is no shrinking violet. A survivor of the war in the Balkans, she immigrated to the U.S. from Bosnia in 1995. She spoke no English, but she had

a fierce desire to live in a free country. Now Homan, who took over the CEO

spot at Chicago-based School of Rock in June 2014, considers herself a classic American success story.

After earning her master’s in electrical engineering from New Mexico State University—she already held degrees in piano and physics from the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia—Homan landed a job in robotics at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA’s R&D center in La Cañada Flintridge, Calif. However, she needed to wait six months for grant funding to begin.

Reluctant to sit idly by, Homan took a position teaching robotics at a local Futurekids franchise. She loved the business and her work with children—so much so that she became the center director. Homan never did take that job at JPL, instead sticking with Futurekids, eventually joining the corporate team and being named CEO less than two years...

There are performing arts schools for children who want to pursue a career in theater. There are club sports for those who want to improve their chances at making it to the big leagues. But there aren't many options for those who want to start a band. The tried-and-true formula is to find some friends, buy secondhand instruments, spend hours jamming in a garage and dream that all that hard work and sacrifice will pay off someday. However, the owners of the School of Rock in Huntington Beach want to flip that model upside down.

Two childhood friends opened a new branch of the School of Rock franchise in Mamaroneck in September. With corporate backgrounds, Tory Ridder and Ned Kelly, and their business partners Steve Kennedy and Tony Reilly, are getting a taste of what it’s like to be entrepreneurs – and rock band managers.

"It’s such a great feeling – and this ties into the business – to see the music that I grew up on inspiring the next generation and how they’re able to connect with it and use it as a way to learn music,” said Ridder, 40, of Fleetwood in Mount Vernon. “This type of program teaches kids how music was meant to be played and how the founding fathers of rock, how they did it. It’s a wonderful tool to use that music as both inspiration and teaching material for the kids.”

The new Gambrills School of Rock location is owned and operated by multi-unit franchise owner Nick Borgeson. When he first learned about School of Rock, Borgeson was drawn to its performance-based approach, which he found to be the perfect way to inspire and build confidence...

The walls of School of Rock Mansfield vibrated with the sounds of a teen-age rock band pounding out “Come Together” by the Beatles.

They weren’t really a band, just students learning their instruments who are brought together occasionally by instructors to test and hone their musical chops. Every student, no matter how green, gets the opportunity to jam, to be part of a team.

“If I played in front of someone, it would have to be in front of friends or my family,” said Yauncee Yeager, 14, a guitar player who has been taking lessons at the school the past month. “I’m not that shy anymore.”

Case in point, says the staff of the School of Rock, which opened quietly in mid-June then had a grand-opening Aug. 16. The program, like other music schools, teaches students to play instruments. But the School of Rock distinguishes itself with its faithful focus on rock music, mostly classic rock, and with its belief that getting all students into band scenarios builds self-confidence, responsibility and commitment.

When the students improve, their groups will play at...

Any student in the top 1.5 percentile has accomplished a great deal getting to the head of the class. Most just don’t have to do so by video auditions within a class of 17,000 — split between 140 schools in eight countries — the way area School of Rock singing guitarists Alex Shaw and Ben Rothschild and vocalist Gianna Mascaro did to become 2014 School of Rock All-Stars.

Their reward was a recent all-star tour that included the 19th annual Gathering of the Vibes festival in Bridgeport, Conn., a sprawling event organized after Grateful Dead guru Jerry Garcia’s death. This edition featured the likes of Widespread Panic, Ziggy Marley and John Fogerty.

Those headliners are old enough to be grandparents to Mascaro, a University of Central Florida student; the 15-year-old Rothschild, and Royal Palm Beach resident Shaw — a 13-year-old eighth-grader at Bak Middle School who became one of the youngest-ever all-stars last year at age 12.

“We played three nights at Gathering of the Vibes, and it was crazy,” Shaw says. “So was last year, when we played Lollapalooza in...

For most performers it was another large weekend-long concert, but for two Hinsdale teens it was the opportunity of a lifetime.

Paden Guido, 17, and Meghan Callahan, 18, took the Lollapalooza stage Aug. 1 in Chicago, performing in front of thousands of festival goers.

“There’s really this feeling you have that really can’t be put into words,” Guido said.

Guido and Callahan were joined by musicians from across the country as part of the School of Rock AllStars Tour.

Rick Carney, the AllStars music director that worked with Guido and Callahan before and during Lollapalooza, said 150 musicians were chosen out of 15,000 students in the School of Rock system nationwide to perform as part of the AllStars tour.

As part of the tour, the girls performed at Chicago taverns and venues for nearly a week until they finally took the stage at Lollapalooza.

And for each girl the experience gave them something to appreciate.

“The best part was just being surrounded by the other artists,” Callahan said.

For Danny Huerta, a good performance is all about state of mind.

“Even though you feel stupid, if you commit to it, you don’t look stupid,” said Huerta, 17.

When Huerta recently slung on his guitar and stepped onto a stage at Lollapalooza, that mantra was likely at the fore of his mind.

The Guerin Prep student was among a select group who recently performed at the gargantuan summer musical festival in Chicago as members of the School of Rock AllStars. The ensemble of student-age musicians was handpicked from among the thousands who study at the hundred or so School of Rock franchises in the country.

The company emphasizes confidence-building through instructional lessons and live performances, with a whiff of big-haired, arena rock sentimentality permeating throughout.

Darrel Belen of Waukegan was one of thousands of music lovers who attended Chicago’s Lollapalooza festival over the weekend.

But the 16-year-old wasn’t there as a fan watching the musical acts from the Grant Park fields.

Instead, Belen was drumming his heart out as a member of the School of Rock’s All Star group, which partnered with the music-centric cancer charity Love Hope Strength for a July 29 through Aug. 3 tour. The group’s musical finale was Friday at Lollapalooza.

Belen’s group took the Kidzapalooza stage for two sets that lasted a little more than hour.

Although he’s been playing drums for the past three years with a band called October Road, Belen called his time on a Lollapalooza stage “nothing like I’ve ever experienced before.”

“I’ve been gigging for years,” Belen said. “That helped me not get nervous that night.”

Still, the Lollapalooza gig proved a new thrill as he had to get on stage with musicians he had just met weeks before during auditions for the All Star group.

The recent Staples High School graduate is excited for college, but there’s a part of him that wants to repeat senior year.

“It’s bittersweet,” Staffa, a guitar player, said before his afternoon set with the School of Rock Fairfield house band Sunday. “It’s the only place where you can buy performance experience. The School of Rock does a ton of that. It’s priceless.”

Staffa is also playing with the School of Rock All-Stars, an elite group of School of Rock students from across the Tristate area.

He’ll share the stage with 13-year-old drummer Becca Webster, who spoke of the “confidence” she gained at the school.

The Milford, N.J., resident, a student at the School of Rock in Easton, joined 17 other young East Coast musicians July 14 at the 25th annual Zappanale, a music festival held in Bad Doberan, Germany, in celebration of legendary rock star Frank Zappa.

Zappanale is an annual festival that celebrates Zappa's contribution to music and social change. This year's festival drew about 3,000.

Australia’s first performance-based music centre, School of Rock Macarthur, opened in Campbelltown on Saturday.

The centre aims to inspire young musicians to rock on stage, by giving them the chance to perform at live venues and with professional performers on a regular basis.

Owners Ken Martin and Omar Bahemia leapt at the opportunity to open the first venue in Campbelltown due to the region’s enthusiasm for rock and roll culture.

“The Australian market doesn’t cater for kids who musically wish to take their talent onto the stage,” Mr Martin said. “As a musician, I understand how important the performance aspect is and the buzz that it creates.”

Mr Martin said the school, with more than 130 franchises across seven countries, had programs to suit all skill levels and ages.

There are classes for preschoolers, beginners, first and second grade rockers and adults.

“When we came across School of Rock, we were intrigued by the way students grew through the program, learnt rock and roll...

MUSIC PARTY

The School of Rock

More than 140 locations in 30 states

The plan: Kids spend the first hour in the music room with an instructor -- little ones learn rhythm games, play instruments, and perform a rock version of "Happy Birthday" into standing mics. Tweens head to the sound studio to write a song. "We take a backing track of, say, a Katy Perry tune and then have the kids work with an instructor to come up with lyrics that match the interests of the guest of honor," says John Carboy, manager of the Farmingdale, New York, location.

The experience: "My 3-year-old daughter, Olivia, still sings the oldies songs she learned at her birthday party, and that was eight months ago," says Laura Bisceglia, of Levittown, New York.

The details: Starting at $300, depending on location, for an hour of music and an hour in a private party room for up to 15 kids, including pizza, paper goods, and drinks.

Glance up next time you're at a Blue Man Group show.

The drummer in neon yellow banging out during the high-energy performance might just be Luke Sangerman — a 17-year-old high school student who's the youngest performer to ever be in a Blue Man production.

In fact, Luke started when he was just 16, beating out more than 150 professional drummers at an open audition last year.

"I wasn’t expecting really anything," he said. "When I got the job, it was kind of a miracle."

But Luke's age doesn't mean he's not a seasoned performer.

The Chicago Academy for the Arts rising senior started making noise at 9 months old, breaking his mom's wooden spoons on old pots and pans, mother Jae Sangerman said. At 6, Luke started taking lessons from a man he and his father met on weekly trips to play drums at Guitar Center.

Soon after, he started playing Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin music with other young musicians at School of Rock, a...

It sounds nearly impossible but a new music class is helping toddlers find their tune, and it’s going on tour across the Denver metro area this spring.

When the Little Wing rock and roll band meets in the Ken Caryl Ranch House each week, two- and three-year-olds rock out with some help from their parents.

“They are two-year-olds and they are three-year-olds. You know, sometimes they are going to get up and walk away and come back and you know, that’s why we have the parents with them,” said Vicky Morris, Little Wing Director.

Little Wing aims to get toddlers moving and to teach them how to manipulate sound trhough their own voices. They also get a chance to strum guitars, hit snare drums and otherwise play around with an array of instruments.

“I definitely intend for (my son) to play an instrument as he grows older and this is definitely a great exposure at a very young age,” said Laura Fleenor.

Despite the unique challenges that come with teaching toddlers, many of whom have never spent time in organized group settings, Morris says Little Wing is...

So you want to be a rock star?

More accurately, your kid wants to be a rock star. Or maybe she’s just tired of taking lessons for that guitar she begged to get last Christmas.

You’re in luck. Music studios offering rock band-based music lessons are experiencing a rapid expansion across the area. The idea has been around for a number of years, but the last year has seen the opening of at least three new schools that offer rock-style music instruction for kids.

Two years ago, “06880″ profiled Ethan Walmark. The 6-year-old — on the autism spectrum, as a very high-functioning child — played and sang “Piano Man” in a YouTube video. It went viral (over 1.5 million views), and Ethan was an international star.

A lot has happened since.

Billy Joel called Ethan’s intro “better than mine.” Ethan performed live on the “Today Show.” He was 1 of only 14 people worldwide – and the youngest — to receive a “Genius of Autism” award. (Then he won it again.) The Huffington Post named him 1 of 20 “Child Prodigies.”

He helped Yoko Ono flip the switch to light the Empire State Building blue for World Autism Awareness Day. Ethan looked her in the eye and said, “Imagine a world without autism!”

Meeting Ethan before a concert, John Mayer said, “Hey, I know you! You’re the internet sensation!”

The young musicians flash fleeting grins at parents and friends as they nervously walk on stage, some of them for the very first time.

Above them, portraits of rock and blues legends Eric Clapton, BB King, Janis Joplin, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix seem to look on, as lovingly as the proud parents in the crowd.

A few last fidgets with strings and sticks and suddenly the drummer is counting them down to the first song. It’s showtime.

The band members settle into the rhythm and seem to find their groove, finally letting loose relaxed smiles and showing their excitement of performing on stage.

The students at Oviedo’s School of Rock have been working toward this very performance for the past three months. They met with their instructor once a week for 45-minute private lessons and they spent two-and-a-half hours a week practicing together as a performance band.

This season they performed the classic rock hits of KISS and Led Zeppelin, much to the delight of the dads in the audience who...

Asked why San Diego’s School of Rock chose to open an new branch in Encinitas, music director Tyler Ward credits popular demand and sympatico vibe. “We have recently had tons of requests from families in North County for a more central location,” he elaborates. “I worked at Lou’s Records for years and we all love the culture of Encinitas. It’s a perfect fit.”

The new school’s opening coincides with the older San Diego branch’s move to a larger space at Liberty Station. According to general manager Laura Bratlien, “It was time for an upgrade, and Liberty Station feels like the best fit, especially since it is surrounded by kids and students.”

To which Ward adds, “We reached a point where we needed to add more lesson and rehearsal rooms to accommodate our student body. We’ve been interested in moving to Liberty Station for years now....”

A Springfield music store discovers a lack of “music therapy” classes in the Ozarks and is now trying to do something about it.

School of Rock has only been open for about six months on E. Sunshine street. In that time several parents have asked them if they would offer music classes for autistic and special needs kids.

The music school didn’t originally have classes like that on its radar, but is now offering those kinds of classes.

One parent of an autistic child says there are only a few music therapy classes in Springfield but are expensive and have been on waiting lists for years.

“We were really excited about it when School of Rock told us they would offer this class…it gave us a chance to integrate our son with other peers in a real life situation,” said Becky Velasco.

The mural of a hippie named Beardy McGreen on a building south of downtown had shown passers-by the two-fingered peace sign since 2006. Now it and the building are both gone, victims of a clerical error...

Business owner Scott Rinaberger heard about it and remembered Beardy. He wanted the mural for his new School of Rock music education location in Kirkwood. Rinaberger contacted the demolition company to see if the mural was still there. His request appeared to go nowhere, so he drove down to the site before a Rams football game and saw the empty space where the building once stood.

“You killed Beardy,” Rinaberger remembered saying.

But there, he saw a pile of rubble. And in it was Beardy McGreen.

“We were able to salvage most of him,” Rinaberger said. Now, the bearded peace-lover takes up most of a wall in the school’s main performance studio.

Chris Catalano, CEO of School of Rock, believes kids should start earlier, in preschool. School of Rock is the leader in performance-based music education for children ages 2 – 18 along with adult programs. Music programs are designed to create a supportive environment where music students of all skill levels are comfortable yet challenged at every turn. Chris thinks preschool is the ideal age for children to expand his or her musical horizons and abilities. “School of Rock believes the “window of opportunity” for developing a musical sensibility within children is from birth to nine years old. During this time, the mental structures and mechanisms associated with processing and understanding music are in the prime stages of development, making it vital to expose children in this age range to music.” He thinks kids should be introduced to music from birth, start group lessons at 3 years old and pick up an instrument between 5 and 10.

Yesterday, I was invited by my friend Amy to watch her daughter’s ‘School of Rock’ concert. What I (along with several hundred other people) witnessed was absolutely awesome! As a matter of fact, my faith in the youth of America was slightly restored. I’m not kidding. Here’s why…

All of the kids bring their own instruments, play their own instruments and, most importantly, know the history behind the songs and artists that they play. We’re not talking about Justin Bieber or Jonas Brothers or some other pop group. These kids are playing Hendrix, Blondie, The Ramones, Cheap Trick, The Beatles and other acts that made music what it is today.

School of Rock's Mollie Reyes is quite the character. She's animated, never taking life too seriously, but she's in a new position for the school that can be easily filed under high-pressure: one that wedges her in between the parents of suburbia and the youngsters of the metroplex who are dying to start rocking. Thankfully, after speaking with her, we learned that the parents aren't nearly as tense as they're portrayed in a lot of our favorite John-Hughes-esque coming-of-age films. Reyes has found them supportive and largely musically interactive themselves. Reyes also spent a spell booking live music in Denton, and she knows her bands. It was great to get to know her, and School of Rock (which operates quite a handful of branches around DFW) a little bit better on the eve of her bump up to GM the new SOR outlet in Mansfield.

Patrick Redd guides the young participants of School of Rock through questions about music and life like a maestro conducting a symphony.

Redd, general manager and music director at School of Rock, 1121 N.E. Rice Rd. in Lee’s Summit, ties learning a new craft into lessons of everyday life.

“We’re going to be the best band ever and everybody is going to be super cool with everybody,” Redd says to a group of five young aspiring rockers ages 7 to 12 during a rehearsal session Jan. 18. An older group of students will join Redd and his fellow instructors later for a jam session. The answer is in response to a concern from one student about getting along with others in settings outside of School of Rock. “That’s the way School of Rocks rolls. We’ve got none of that around here. School of Rock is not about that. School of Rock is about being cool with everybody, so we’ve got this.”

The Fillmore is accustomed to promoting the likes of Mary J. Blige and John Legend, but tonight it hosted a 4-and-a-half hour concert by groups of relative unknowns. They ranged in age from as young as 6 to high school age. They were student musicians at Silver Spring's School of Rock.

The training ground for local artists encouraged students to sell tickets to family and friends to guarantee them a live stage performance.

Music Director Forrest Hainline IV says his school is all about promoting the love of music and encouraging his young people that they have the confidence to do it.

According to Laura Bollettino, executive director at the School of Rock of Silver Spring, the philosophy behind the unconventional music school is “if you tell [children] they can do something, then they think they can and they do it.”

“You tell them, get on-stage at The Fillmore and they say, ‘Yeah, why wouldn’t I get on stage at The Fillmore?’” Bollettino said. “Any adult would be paralyzed with fear.”

Students from the School of Rock in Silver Spring will prove Bollettino right on Sunday when they take the stage at the venue.

And while you’ll hear their music, you may see slightly smaller, younger versions of those bands onstage as well. Great Scott! No, time travel hasn’t been discovered just yet: All of those bands, and more, will be covered by San Diego’s School of Rock during a special Best of San Diego show.

Pearl River native Shuman Roy left the corporate world to open a business related to his love of music.

Roy found the opportunity to do that by opening the Orangeburg School of Rock music school at 135 Erie Street in Blauvelt.

"When I saw what School of Rock was doing, I first thought that it was a shame they didn't have aSchool of Rock when I was growing up.

You aren’t going to find any quiet classrooms filled with studying students at a new school in Flower Mound. Instead, this campus encourages kids to get loud and rock out to some great tunes.

They’re cool, confident, and capable of making a big splash with their musical talents. Welcome to the School of Rock!

“We have a motto that we inspire kids to rock on stage and in life,” said Ray Kidd, the school’s music director. He explained that these students learn more than just how to play rock and roll songs. “Students learn how to sing, write and produce music, play instruments and, yes, rock out.”

For years, the Parkville location was the only location in the metro, but now two more schools have been added in Lee’s Summit and Overland Park.

“No kid ever decided he wanted to play guitar, keyboard or drums or whatever because he wanted to sit at the end of his bed and play. That kid wants to play on stage,” said Pat Redd, School of Rock general manager.

The Lee’s Summit location opened in November and the one in Overland Park should be ready to open by spring.

A new school is setting the stage to bring an edgy beat to the already hip Belmont Boulevard.

The School of Rock is preparing to open its first franchise in Nashville, the second school in Middle Tennessee.

"I've been producing and composing my own music," instructor Tim Zimmerman said. "I've been touring since I was 17. So (I've) just kind of been doing rock music my whole life."

Professional musicians provide students with a different type of music lesson.

"If they like the Black Keys, well let's learn a Black Keys song. And we teach theory in that Black Keys song," owner Kelly McCreight said.

At his school, there's no such thing as recitals. Instead, students headline their own concerts in venues like the Franklin Theater, the Rutledge and 3rd and Lindsley.

According to the National Summer Learning Association, numerous studies show that summer learning opportunities lead to higher graduation rates and better preparation for college. Keeping children engaged through enriching experiences and activities have also been shown to positively affect their self-esteem, confidence and motivation. For those who don’t participate in summer learning activities, the break can lead to serious academic consequences. By participating in summer camps, students return to school with improved social skills, project planning skills, confidence and an increased awareness of learning and leadership. Experiences that children have at a summer camp can be profound and remembered long after the summer is over.

It’s never too early to start thinking about where to send your child for summer camp. Although many camps can teach a child valuable skills, it’s worthwhile to consider sending your children to a summer camp that specializes in something that fosters both intellectual and social growth. Music camps offer children the opportunity to develop...

Want to be a rock star? Getting the training just got easier. School of Rock, a national performance-based music program, opened a second location in the metropolitan area. The first location is on Hawthorne Boulevard in Southeast Portland.

But the logistics of fitting in a 40-minute roundtrip commute for a weekly lesson was a deal breaker for many families.

When the opportunity arose to open a school in Lake Oswego, Hinds didn’t hesitate.

Music has always been an important part of David Bodie’s life.

He began learning to play the drums at the age of 9 and would later have “jam sessions” with his father, a vocalist and guitarist, in the basement of their home.

Bodie joined a band in high school and eventually went on to tour internationally as a musician for several years. When he decided to settle down and have a family, a friend approached him with an interesting proposition. Would he like to teach music to young musicians at a School of Rock location in New Jersey?

“When I got the job, my friend was already looking into expanding. School of Rock is a franchise, so there’s room to grow,” Bodie said.

Even though Bodie was commuting from Saugerties to New Jersey several days a week, he fell in love with the job. Three years later, he is opening his own location in Latham.

The Wexford School of Rock opened with a smash.

Blake Meinhardt, 12, of Adams ceremoniously destroyed a beginner's acoustic guitar in lieu of a ribbon cutting to mark the school's grand opening on Sept. 7.

The guitar smashing was just the beginning of a hard rocking day in Wexford as students interested in learning to play guitar, bass, keyboards, drums or perform vocals got an opportunity to see what School of Rock has to offer.

Students who had little to no experience with the instruments got together for a short rehearsal to learn The Who's “My Generation,” said manager Alicia Pascazi. They performed the song for parents in a mock rehearsal.

"We don't teach music lessons the traditional way," said Dean Tarpley, Dallas School of Rock co-owner. "In the old world of teaching music, you would sit a kid in a room and give them instruction. We don't believe in that method. We are all about a nontraditional approach to teaching music."

So when Beck wrote his latest album, Song Reader, and released it as a 108-page book of art and sheetmusic instead of an actual recording, he left a grand experiment for fans to attempt to "cover" any of the 20 songs on the album.

You can't buy the record for Song Reader, but you can check out this show put on by the amazing School of Rock, who have taken on the challenge of arranging Beck's compositions in their own style. Plus, all proceeds will go to benefit 826 Seattle.
