Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek met when they were students at UCLA's film school. Robbie Krieger and John Densmore were in a band called The Psychedelic Rangers, and knew Manzarek through their meditation classes. Together, they formed The Doors in 1965, borrowing the name from The Doors Of Perception, a novel by Aldous Huxley. The group released its first album, The Doors in 1967.

Although rooted in blues and R&B, the band developed a distinctive sound that included elements of classical and flamenco music. Morrison, with his good looks, emotional vocals and often cryptic lyrics, was the object of most the attention focused on the band. Drugs and alcohol took a toll on Morrison's onstage performances and offstage behavior. His death in 1971, at age 27, remains a mystery. The official cause of death was listed as a heart attack, but no autopsy was performed.

The band continued to perform, with little success, and finally broke up in 1972. In 2002, Kreiger and Manzarek reunited to form The Doors of the 21st Century. Densmore, who says he wasn't invited to join the new group, went to court and eventually got a ruling preventing the group from using The Doors in its name. The group now performs as Riders On The Storm.

Jimi Hendrix. Carlos Santana. Jimmy Page. Stevie Ray Vaughan. Eddie Van Halen.

The mere mention of names like these evokes the timeless melodies that these legends have emblazoned on our souls.

To them, the guitar was not just a piece of wood with strings. The instrument became an extension of their body, which they used to express their love, angst, passion, and a host of countless emotions.

Guitar Gods is a tribute to those who have not only given millions a soundtrack to live their lives by, but are inspiring a whole new generation of musicians to one day do the same.

On paper, Cream seems an odd lot for a rock band. Lead vocalist-bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker were primarily jazzmen. Eric Clapton played blues guitar. Prior to joining Cream, Baker and Bruce were in a group called the Graham Bond Organization. The friction between them sometimes erupted into sabotage of one another's equipment and onstage fights. The two managed to put aside their feud when Clapton and Bruce left John Mayall's Blues Breakers to form Cream, along with Baker.

Cream was one of the first "power" rock bands to use only guitar, bass, and drums. The band was noted for improvising both their set lists and their musical arrangements, sometimes jamming for as long as 20 minutes on one song. Clapton claims that he once stopped playing in the middle of one such jam, and that the other two played on without noticing. It was this loose style that led Clapton to leave the band, signalling its end just under three years from the time it was formed.

The group performed a brief set during the 1993 ceremony in which they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Jack Bruce nearly died after a liver transplant in 2003. In May, 2005 the group reunited for a series of concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall, the same venue where they played their farewell concert in 1968. Another series of reunion concerts is booked at Madison Square Garden in New York City in October 2005.

Rock N Romp!
Real Philly local shows that are kid 'ear friendly' but not short on the real rockness.

Sunday Apr 20, 03:00 pm

ROCK-N-ROMP is a concert series that presents great local bands to audiences that are dying to hear them but find it too hard to get out to bars and clubs. Folks can bring their young ones to dance, scream, and generally freak-out at a live concert the way that Mommy and Daddy used to before they were...well...Mommy and Daddy. This is not your average "children's music". Although that stuff can be great, these shows are as much for the parents as for the kids. The volume level may be a little lower but HEY... you get to rock out to the kind of quality live music that you love WITH YOUR KIDS! If you want your band to play or you wish to host an event or volunteer please drop me a line. Heres the shpeel from our fearless leader, Debbie, in DC:

The Soundtrack Workshop

This season Philly SOR students are learning to compose and arrange an original soundtrack to a classic silent era film. The focus of the workshop is on creative composition in a 'large rock ensemble' setting, instrumental song writing and improvisation. The live performance of the piece will be paired with a viewing of the film in The Black Lodge and a live recording will be produced from the final performance which will be pressed as a DVD.

Frank Zappa's
JOE'S GARAGE

Saturday Jun 07, 08:00 pm

Sunday Jun 08, 08:00 pm

Joe's Garage is a 1979 rock opera by Frank Zappa. The album follows "Joe," a stereotypical garage band youth who unintentionally journeys
through the stench of the music business, and is narrated by the "Central Scrutinizer" who haunts Joe's psyche with McCarthyistic 50s-era discouragement and "scrutiny." The major themes of the story include groupie migration, mockery of Scientology, appliance fetishism, garage bands, and above all censorship of music as an art form.
