workshop description
In this workshop, students will learn how to make music on the spot with other musicians. Through soloing, comping, rhythm, and harmony, students will learn how to approach music in a new way. Practicing on your own only gets you so far as a musician. Putting those honed skills to the test in a live jam setting forces musicians to think five steps ahead at all times. Students in this workshop will learn how to communicate without speaking, how to play off of other musicians and complement their musical phrases, how to show discretion when supporting a soloist, how to shine as a soloist, and much more. This workshop will explore improvisation within several genres of music such as rock, jazz, blues, and pop.
