PERFORMANCE PROGRAM

The Performance Program is School of Rock's hallmark music program, where tens of thousands of students enroll each year for ages 11-18yrs old. Read more about our performance program HERE.

Black Sabbath - Mondays with Adam

While the phrase “Heavy Metal” had been thrown about during the '60s, it took the arrival of Black Sabbath to fully realize the genre. Considered the pioneers of heavy metal, Black Sabbath are rock and roll legends. Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward created some of the heaviest music of the 1960s and '70s, and have influenced practically every metal band who have emerged in their wake, including Metallica, Slayer, System of a Down, Slipknot, and Soundgarden. After 50+ years, despite lineup changes (Ronnie James Dio as vocalist being the most notable), band names (including both the Polka Tuck Blues Band and Earth), and inter-band personality conflicts, Black Sabbath have still emerged as the first and most influential heavy metal band in rock history. Major musical concepts employed by Black Sabbath that the students will learn include alternate tunings, changes in tempo and feel, and improvisation. This show is sure to be incredibly fun for your student rocker, and will aid in their development to the next musical level.

RADIOHEAD - Tuesdays with Chris

Radiohead has emerged in the 21st century as torchbearers of the progressive rock tradition, and have threaded the needle between innovation and popularity as well as anyone. Formed in 1985 in the UK under the name On A Friday, with members Thom Yorke (vocals), Johnny Greenwood (Guitar/multi-instrumentalist) , Colin Greenwood (Bass), Ed O’Brien (Guitar/Vocals), and Philip Selway (Drums), they eventually changed their name to Radiohead upon the request of their record label, EMI. After two albums that found some success in the alternative scene thanks to the slacker anthem “Creep”, Radiohead released what would become their landmark album, OK Computer. This masterpiece cemented them as true artists and gained them worldwide success. With their constant instrumental experimentation, culturally relevant lyrics and themes, and blend of styles and genres, Radiohead are heralded as one of the most important and critically acclaimed rock acts of the modern era. The Radiohead show is an ambitious challenge for all student levels, but can be one of the most rewarding and educational shows offered by School of Rock.

WOODSTOCK - Wednesdays with Eric

In 1969, almost half a million people made a pilgrimage to Yasgur’s Farm in upstate New York for three days of peace and music. Catapulting many iconic artists who played this landmark music festival into superstar status, Woodstock embodies the spirit of the 60s. It was a watershed moment for Rock and Roll, and this show celebrates the legendary, and very stylistically diverse, artists who promoted unity and embraced freedom of expression while performing at the festival. Songs by The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Janis Joplin, Sly & The Family Stone, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Grateful Dead and more make this show an exciting and well-balanced educational challenge for all instruments and experience levels!

Aretha Franklin - Thursdays with Kevin

Perhaps the greatest vocalist of the modern era of music, Aretha Franklin - hailed as “The Queen of Soul” - possessed a powerful voice capable of expressing emotion like few others. She was a gifted interpreter of other people’s work, often putting unique soul, funk, and gospel spins onto songs originally done by rock artists. Aretha’s bands were legendary, and this music is as educational as anything School of Rock offers. Aretha was also an amazing songwriter in her own right, as well as an underrated piano player. Beyond her musical talents, Aretha was an advocate for civil rights and an inspiration as a woman who forged her own path to the absolute height of artistic success. This show is an important and challenging theme for all instrumentalists, as Aretha Franklin’s performances featured some of the most in-demand players in the business, including the famous Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. Song selections such as “Respect”, “Chain Of Fools”, “(You Make Me Feel) Like A Natural Woman”, and “Think” will show students why Aretha Franklin is considered the best of the best.

PARAMORE - Saturdays with Shane

Arguably the most successful Rock band to emerge this millennium, Paramore was formed in the Nashville area in the early 2000s, and got their start on renowned Pop Punk label Fueled by Ramen. Their sound has evolved as their career has blossomed, incorporating diverse influences such as Rock, Punk, New Wave, Pop, Emo, and Dance music. Led by singer Hayley Williams, a dynamic performer with a four-octave vocal range, the band is known for hits like “Ain’t It Fun,” “Decode,” “Hard Times,” and “This Is Why.” Students of all instruments will find worthwhile challenges in the band’s tight hooks and varied sonic palette, which often includes synths, strings, and marimba in addition to the standard Rock instruments.

Please speak to your instructor and double check rehearsal days, rehearsal times, and performance weekends before making your choices. If you have to switch shows later on, or sign up after September 20th, your options WILL be limited.
