BATTLE OF THE GENRES: Five Bands, Five Sounds, Two Nights

Every season our students pick a genre and go all in — and this fall, five bands drew five very different cards. Groove Patrol took funk. The Hit List runs pop. Riff Lords hold down classic rock, Teenage Dirtbags bring the alternative, and The Flannel Mafia closes it out in grunge. Same stage, same night, nobody playing it safe.

Here's what makes a School of Rock show different from anything else you'll catch in Aurora: every note comes from a student. These are kids and teens who have spent the entire season rehearsing these songs at the school — learning the parts, running them as a band, arguing over tempos, and getting them stage-ready. No backing tracks. No shortcuts. Just a real student rock band playing a full set in front of a live room.

School of Rock Aurora is an extracurricular, performance-based music school with programs for ages 4 through adult. Our students don't learn music in a practice room and hope it sticks — they learn it by playing it out loud, in front of people. That's the whole point. Live student performance is how the next generation of musicians gets made, and it's a piece of what keeps Aurora's music scene — and music culture worldwide — alive and worth showing up for.
