PERFORMANCE PROGRAM: ARETHA FRANKLIN VS. MOTOWN
Ages 10-17 | rehearsals: mondays 6:00-8:00
Aretha Franklin possessed a powerful, emotive voice, was a gifted re-interpreter of rock music, and was an amazing songwriter in her own right. Although Motown founder Berry Gordy offered her a deal early on, she signed with the more established Columbia Records. Meanwhile Gordy’s approach fueled one of the most successful black-owned businesses and broke racial barriers in the music industry, propelling groups like Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Diana Ross & the Supremes, and the Temptations to mainstream success. Aretha’s impact and Detroit ties make her an honorary Motown member, celebrated alongside official artists. Aretha’s legendary bands, performances with in-demand players such as the famous Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, and Motown’s infectious sound, make this show an important and challenging theme for all instrumentalists.
PERFORMANCE PROGRAM: BRITISH INVASION

This is a great choice for all instruments and experience levels - students will learn the foundations of Rock music and expand their musical repertoire.

PERFORMANCE PROGRAM: Pop punk & emo
AGES 10-17 | REHEARSALS: SATURDAYS 11:00-1:00
In the 1990s, artists such as Green Day and Blink-182 were blending punk attitudes with a more polished, commercially appealing sound than their predecessors. By the 2000s, Pop Punk and its Emo offshoot - featuring emotional and confessional topics - were entrenched in the mainstream music world, with bands such as Paramore, My Chemical Romance, and Panic! At the Disco topping the charts and selling out arenas. This popular and influential genre will be a fun set that is challenging but also solidifies fundamental skills. Rock your weekend with this awesome show!
ADULT PROGRAM: THE SEATTLE SCENE
AGES 18+ | rehearsals: tuesdays 8:00-10:00
The landscape of popular music permanently changed in 1991, when Nirvana’s song “Smells Like Teen Spirit” took radio and MTV by storm, and other bands followed, ushering in this “alternative” era. Seattle’s music scene was defined by heavy guitars, powerful drumming, and expressive, moody vocals. Bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden valued innovation and authenticity over precision and posturing, contrasting with the Pop and Hair Metal that ruled the previous decade. This show will challenge students of all skill levels on guitar, bass, drums, and vocals.

In 1969, almost half a million people made a pilgrimage to Yasgur’s Farm in upstate New York for three days of peace and music, catapulting iconic artists into superstar status. Woodstock embodies the spirit of the 60s and celebrates the legendary, and stylistically diverse, artists who promoted unity and freedom of expression. Songs by The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Janis Joplin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Grateful Dead and more make this show an exciting and well-balanced educational challenge for all instruments and experience levels!
