Our nationally recognized, performance-based music education program combines weekly private music lessons with group band rehearsals, giving students the opportunity to learn from professional musicians while preparing for live performances throughout the season.

What Is the School of Rock Performance Program?

The Performance Program is the cornerstone of the School of Rock method. Instead of only practicing scales and exercises, students immediately apply what they learn by rehearsing with other musicians and preparing for live concerts.

Each enrolled student receives:

Fall performance program themes

Lilith Fair - Inspired by the legendary touring festival founded by Sarah McLachlan, the Lilith Fair show features music from some of the most influential female artists and female-fronted bands of the era. Students will perform songs by artists such as Fiona Apple, Erykah Badu, Brandi Carlile, and more.

New Wave - The New Wave genre incorporates a variety of different sounds and styles that were prevalent at the end of the 1970s and expanded until the end of the 1980s. Students will perform songs by artists such as The Cars, Blondie, The Police, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Gary Numan, and more.

Fall Out Boy vs My Chemical Romance - Two of the biggest bands to emerge from the 2000s emo and pop-punk explosion, Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance helped define a generation of alternative rock and have had lasting influence on the genre. Students will dive into the catalogs of both bands, performing everything from massive radio hits to fan-favorite deep cuts.

Classic Rock - Classic Rock encompasses the timeless artists that defined rock music from the late 1960s through the early 1980s. Drawing from the Blues, Folk, and early Rock and Roll traditions, this era produced some of the most influential bands in music history. Students will learn and perform songs by artists like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Aerosmith, Boston, and Fleetwood Mac.

Hardcore - Emerging from the Punk movement in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Hardcore took the speed, aggression, and DIY spirit of Punk and pushed it to new extremes. Early pioneers such as Black Flag, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, and Dead Kennedys laid the groundwork for a genre that would influence everything from alternative rock to modern metal. As Hardcore evolved, bands like Gorilla Biscuits, Code Orange, and Turnstile, continued to expand the genre while maintaining its raw energy and uncompromising attitude.

Billboard #1s - Since the launch of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1958, reaching the number one spot has become the ultimate measure of commercial success in popular music. Spanning decades and genres, Billboard #1 hits have captured defining moments in music history, from the classic rock era through modern pop, hip-hop, R&B, country, and alternative rock. This show features an exciting mix of songs that topped the charts, giving students the opportunity to perform some of the most recognizable and influential music ever recorded. Artists include Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Nirvana, Madonna, Prince, The Beatles, Queen, Stevie Wonder, and more.

Songwriting - School of Rock’s Songwriting Program teaches the fundamentals of songwriting and arranging, as students compose original works. Rehearsal time for the first half of the season consists of engaging songwriting exercises and lyrical workshops, where students learn to create ideas and overcome writer’s block with techniques that professionals rely on. As each student builds on their original song idea, the group begins arranging the songs for a full band, with each student serving as accompaniment to the other students, helping each other realize their vision. The season culminates in a live performance of all the original songs.

Motown - With over 100 hits in Billboard’s top 10 from 1961 to 1971, the explosive success of Motown Records broke new ground by tearing down racial barriers in the music industry, helping to open the door to mainstream success for countless black creators. In the 1960s, Motown’s star-studded roster featured groups like Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Diana Ross & the Supremes, the Jackson 5, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, the Marvelettes, and the Temptations.
