Most singers spend their practice time working on technique — tone, breath, placement, range. This workshop is about something different: learning to trust your ear and play freely with other people. You'll start with the fundamentals of singing by ear — matching pitch, finding your key, hearing when chords change beneath you — and build toward melodic improvisation over a live backing track using nothing but your voice and your instincts. Along the way we'll cover call and response, the exercise that sits at the root of virtually every improvised music tradition on earth, and talk through the unwritten rules of jamming: when to push, when to hold back, and how to actually listen while you're performing. There's no sheet music in this room. If you've ever wanted to just open your mouth and play, this is the session for you.
