The School of Rock Streetsville House Band, made up of eight members ages 13 to 18, learned on January 9 that they had been selected to perform at Rock in Rio Lisbon. The band was chosen after submitting an audition video of them performing the Foo Fighters’ “Everlong.” The students will be playing 15-20 min sets at Rock in Rio Lisbon, then at Estudio Timout in Lisbon on Monday and at Shoko in Madrid on Tuesday. They will be the only Canadian School of Rock franchise performing at the music festival. Drummer Emma Dennison, 18, shared the group’s excitement: “I’ve only ever really done school performances. Speaking on behalf of the whole band, we’re all just super excited and super grateful for this opportunity, especially because we’re all so young, so this is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” To cover travel costs for the festival (being held in Spain and Portugal), the band’s parents have launched a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of $50,000. In-person fundraisers are also being planned over the coming months.
