Music programs at School of Rock The Woodlands combine one-on-one lessons with group band practices

School of Rock in The Woodlands, TX is proud to serve the Montgomery County community—as well as surrounding areas like Magnolia, Egypt, Shenandoah, Hufsmith, Woodloch, and Rayford—with a revolutionary music education approach. Texas is home to a lot of jam bands, a thriving hip-hop scene, funk, R&B, and a locally historic rock scene. Overall, the music scene is pretty diverse, making it a great place for budding artists. With lessons from our expert instructors, students can learn to rock out on guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, and vocals across every genre including rock pop, country, and R&B. By jamming in a band together with friends while learning to read and play music by ear, students gain the confidence to truly be a rock star. Our students perform at community-based festivals like Operation Pets Alive or Texas Children's Hospital 'Children's Festival' and our seasonal shows take place at venues like Moonshine Deck, Lone Pint Brewery, and Deep Roots Vineyards. We regularly play at local establishments like The Woodlands Pavillion and The Woodlands Mall and want YOU in our next show! Rock 101 music program in The Woodlands for kids and beginners
Rock 101
Ages 8-13

Rock 101 is one of School of Rock The Woodlands's top programs for kids and beginners. Students have one weekly group rehearsal where they learn to play classic rock songs that have been simplified for beginner musicians. Additionally, Rock 101 students in The Woodlands have a weekly private music lesson with an instructor who helps them learn the concepts and skills behind their performance songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our music programs for kids in The Woodlands are designed to get students on stage performing, with the goal of building strong musical proficiency. Younger students at School of Rock The Woodlands who have participated in the Rookies program can move to our Rock 101 music program once they’re ready. Additionally, students (typically ages 8 to 13-years-old) can begin Rock 101 without any prior experience. The goal of this rock program is to quickly develop a basic competence on students’ chosen instruments before moving on to our famous Performance Program.

The Performance Program at School of Rock The Woodlands is our hallmark music program, where tens of thousands of students enroll each year. It consists of a weekly group rehearsal where kids and teens learn by playing rock music's most iconic songs with a band composed of their peers. Students are assigned songs and parts that are tailored to them based on their age, experience and ability to learn new skills and concepts. Students then work through their parts in weekly private music lessons, refining the skills and concepts that those songs introduce. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare kids and teens for live performances. Every few months, School of Rock The Woodlands Performance Program students take the stage and play at local The Woodlands music venues in front of a live audience.

The Path to Take the Stage

School of Rock The Woodlands's music programs for kids and teens are designed to inspire by getting students on stage and performing. All of our other music education programs focus on readying students for our famous Performance Program. This is where students develop incredible musical skills. Performance Program students have often gone through our Rock 101 program first or have some previous basic music experience. These young musicians will have custom development plans outlined by their instructors with key concepts reinforced during private lessons and group rehearsals, all with the goal of performing live at a The Woodlands music venue.

Rookies
Ages 6-7

At School of Rock The Woodlands, our music program for children with no previous musical experience (typically ages 6 to 7-years-old) is called Rookies. Rookies students have one weekly group music lesson where they learn fundamentals like chords, rhythm and song structure. Kids get to learn and experiment with multiple instruments so they can later decide which one they ultimately want to continue pursuing in Rock 101.

The Path to Take the Stage

All of our music programs are designed to inspire students to learn and develop a strong musical proficiency. At School of Rock The Woodlands, younger students who are not ready for a more comprehensive program like Rock 101 can start in Rookies. Additionally, students who have completed the Little Wing program will progress into the Rookies music program. No prior musical experience is needed for Rookies. Once your child is ready for private music lessons (typically older than first or second graders), they will graduate into our Rock 101 program.

Songwriting
Age 12 and over

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens teaches the fundamentals of songwriting, arrangement and music theory, and helps students compose original works.  At School of Rock The Woodlands, songwriting students receive one weekly private lesson where they learn concepts, technique and theory on an instrument of their choice. These principles are then applied in a weekly group lesson where students work together on songwriting exercises and lyrical workshops.  Every few months, Songwriting students take the stage to perform or band together to record their original songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens in The Woodlands is designed to create musical proficiency through the creation of original music. Students at School of Rock The Woodlands who have completed our Rock 101 program can move to our Songwriting program once they’re ready. Additionally, new students who have prior experience with and basic knowledge of an instrument can also begin Songwriting. The program culminates with a live showcase where students perform their original compositions in bands at a local music venue. Students taking the Songwriting Program online will remotely record their original songs to produce a demo of the class's music.

At School of Rock The Woodlands, our students can take online, one-on-one music instruction from the comfort of their homes. We call this program School of Rock Remote. This online music program contains weekly one-on-one instruction conducted by our expert School of Rock instructors in a safe virtual lesson room.
 
Students will receive their training using our proprietary education program, The School of Rock Method™, which couples live video lessons with our proprietary Method App™, SongFirst Approach™ and Method Books™.

School of Rock The Woodlands's Adult Program is for students over 18 years old who are looking to either improve their musical proficiency or pick up an instrument with no prior musical experience. As with most School of Rock music programs, the Adult Program uses a performance-based music education approach. This means the curriculum focuses on learning music concepts and applying them in a live performance setting. Our Adult Music Program includes one weekly private music lesson and a weekly group rehearsal. Every student at School of Rock The Woodlands is placed in a band of fellow adults and then assigned specific songs as a way of learning key music concepts and skills. Adult students then take the stage to play at a live show in The Woodlands.

The School of Rock The Woodlands Adult Program is open to all experience levels and each student will follow a customized learning plan developed by their instructor. Adult students will work together during rehearsal to prepare for a live performance at a real rock venue in The Woodlands.

Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock AllStars Tour takes the very best students from around the world and sends them on a nationwide summer tour across the United States. Less than 1% of School of Rock students are selected each year to represent School of Rock as an AllStar. All Performance Program students are eligible to audition for this prestigious program. The intensive audition process starts off with video submissions followed by live auditions. Once selected, AllStar students will have an authentic touring experience including traveling on a tour bus, doing tour publicity and starring in nightly performances at famous venues and festivals during a two-week tour.

Becoming an AllStar is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. They play on legendary stages large and small, including The Knitting Factory, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Troubadour and Lollapalooza. AllStar students often go on to have accomplished careers in the music industry. Former AllStars have gone on to become touring artists, star in Broadway musicals, get signed to record deals, become finalists on talent competitions like "The Voice" and "American Idol" and have other notable roles in the music industry.

School of Rock The Woodlands offers beginner singing lessons for kids. Our unique, performance-based approach develops students' musical proficiency by preparing them to perform live. At School of Rock The Woodlands, our vocal coaches are practicing musicians who integrate key music fundamentals—breathing, posture and more—into a curriculum based on performing with a band. Each week, beginner singing students participate in a private singing lesson and a band rehearsal.

Beginner Keyboard Lessons for Kids

At School of Rock we teach differently than other music schools in The Woodlands. Our curriculum is performance-based, meaning that we prepare students to perform. Our piano lessons for beginners combine weekly private instruction with weekly band rehearsals. At School of Rock The Woodlands, our beginner keyboard lessons for kids take key concepts and music fundamentals—finger placement, scales, key differentiation and more—and teach them through popular rock songs. This approach inspires and engages students, which results in attaining a high level of musical proficiency. Jason
General Manager
Jason has an extensive background in leading children, adults, and fellow musicians on a path of enriched development. His passion is sharing success with others. A musician himself, his love for the arts and education has landed him here at School of Rock. In his words, “This is destiny.”

Inspired by bands like My Morning Jacket and Queens of the Stone Age, Jason's former group played many of the popular venues in the Houston and surrounding area. He is no stranger to band life.

In his spare time, Jason likes to kayak fish, golf, or just hang out with his family. He’s a local guy, eager to dig his heels deeper into the soil of the community. He is the General Manager of School of Rock The Woodlands.

Kacey is a Houston native who began playing music at the age of 16 with his youth group, however, he's been music-obsessed since the age of 10. He began his School of Rock journey as an instructor at School of Rock The Woodlands in 2013. After developing a knack for teaching, he quickly became a Show Director for performance groups. After five years of teaching and being an Assistant Director, Kacey pursued his dreams and went on tour! He began working as a Building Engineer for medical real estate when his daughter was born in September of 2020, after playing for hire and working in sales at a music store.

Kacey is honored to be back at his home base and pursuing his passion for teaching and directing here at School of Rock The Woodlands! Kacey writes, records, and performs in a rock group so when he is not at work, you may find him performing out and about in the area with his band.

Nick can't remember a time in his life when he wasn't constantly obsessed with and surrounded by music! His main instruments are drums, guitar, and bass but he can also teach piano and keyboard! He has a long background in formal musical education at the high school and college level and has 13 years of real-world experience playing in bands in the Houston, Dallas, and East Texas areas. His influences consist of classic rock like The Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, and Rush. He is also influenced by many styles of music like progressive rock, jazz, hip-hop, funk, R&B and soul, reggae, and Americana!

Marina grew up super weird but obsessed with music and never looked back! Her main instruments are vocals, keys, and guitar. Marina is a classically trained vocalist and violist. She spent time writing and performing in Sunday Traffic for several years.

Her biggest musical influences are Spinetta, Mitski, and Japanese Breakfast. Her approach and goal in her music lessons is to create a trusted environment for all students to learn and develop a lifelong love for music.

Aidan is a talented musician who started playing keyboard at the age of 10 and drums at 12. Aidan has played at notable venues such as the White Oak Music Hall and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, as well as with independent rock groups and at The Woodlands Church for six years. Aidan has also recorded in prestigious studios like the Tracking Room and Ocean Way Studios in Nashville.

With captivating energy and dynamic performances, Aidan is not only a talented musician but also a skilled teacher. Their passion for music shines through in every lesson they teach, and they specialize in helping students master the keyboard and drums. With years of experience performing at notable venues and recording in prestigious studios, Aidan brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to their teaching. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced player, Aidan is dedicated to helping you push your boundaries and reach your full potential as a musician.

James is as talented as he is cool and easy to work with. He teaches guitar, bass, and drums at School of Rock The Woodlands! James first got into music when he joined his school orchestra in the fifth grade, playing bass. He has played a variety of instruments ever since, with his specialty being guitar.

James studies music in college with a focus on guitar performance. He has over five years of teaching experience as well as years of live gigging experience.

No stranger to the stage, Kenzie has been performing, teaching, and loving music (specifically vocals) for over 16 years. Her career as a musician has taken her from competing with musical theater and classical style voice to singing jazz with a big band, learning religious music, and performing original songs with a live rock band.

Best-selling artists have a vocal coach, so Kenzie could only suggest the same for anyone with or without experience! Her main teaching focus is vocal technique, health, and confidence when working with your instrument, as you don’t get a replacement set of pipes. Being so involved in her community has created many opportunities and lessons that she hopes to share with all students she crosses paths with. Even though she has dabbled and worked with many styles, her heart will always be with rock!

Sophia started taking voice and piano lessons in the third grade after playing around on her parent’s keyboard and singing along to Disney movies. She has been learning, performing, and loving music of all genres ever since!

Sophia is a former School of Rock student and was also an Alley Theatre performer. Currently, she is studying music at Colorado State University. Sophia’s musical influences include Phoebe Bridgers, My Chemical Romance, Radiohead, and Fiona Apple.

Sophia’s philosophy on teaching focuses on understanding each student's unique needs, fostering a positive and supportive classroom environment, and celebrating individual achievements to promote confidence and growth while having fun and jamming to some great tunes! She is a vocal teacher and piano teacher at the School of Rock in The Woodlands.

Tammy enjoys all kinds of art, music, and literature. Tammy is finishing her degree in education and has even taught abroad! Her musical background was brief, but it did inspire her to pursue teaching as a career. She utilizes her love of music and teaching background every day.

Her music taste is very eclectic, from metal to K-pop. Tammy believes we should never stop learning, even as we grow older. Too many opportunities come our way not to try something new!

Pedro was born into a musical family. It’s music that brought him and his family to the United States! His primary instrument is the bass guitar. He can teach advanced bass and is capable of playing many other instruments.

Pedro has an associate's degree in music. He plays with predominantly jazz and funk bands and some of his influences include Jaco Pastorius, Joe Dart, Jamiroquai, and Ray Brown.

Pedro believes that lessons should be digestible and that you should simultaneously play what you love while staying focused on your music education.

Pedro is capable of teaching in both English and Spanish!

Rafe was born around music. His father was in a touring band when he was younger. After having many memorable experiences with lifelong friends throughout his early musical journey, Rafe found his calling in percussion instruments.

Rafe plays drums, keys/piano, and percussion (Cajon and all auxiliary percussion instruments) and is currently studying bass and guitar.

Rafe received a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Music Production at Full Sail University in Orlando, FL. He has played in drumlines, percussion ensembles, wind ensembles, symphonies, orchestras, and concert bands (in a classical context). He was also a part of the top percussion group for the College Park Percussion Studio. Currently, he works on music production and audio engineering with artists, songwriters, and musicians to create records consisting of many styles and genres.

Some of Rafe's early musical influences are Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, Beastie Boys, Rage Against the Machine, and Dr. Dre. Over the years his taste has reached the styles of Kendrick Lamar, Tyler the Creator, Frank Ocean, Chick Corea, and Gary Burton.
