Please be sure you are able to make this commitment before signing up as it makes rehearsals difficult for the other students and directors alike if a student were to suddenly drop out after initial casting.

The landscape of popular music was abruptly and permanently changed in the autumn of 1991, when Nirvana’s song “Smells Like Teen Spirit” took radio and MTV by storm. Soon, other bands with the Grunge sound followed Nirvana up the charts, ushering in the “alternative” era. Emerging out of Seattle, Grunge music is defined by heavy guitars, powerful drumming, and expressive, moody vocals. Bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden valued innovation and authenticity over precision and posturing, which contrasted sharply with the Pop and Hair Metal that had ruled the previous decade. Arguably the most successful Rock band to emerge this millennium, Paramore was formed in the Nashville area in the early 2000s, and got their start on renowned Pop Punk label Fueled by Ramen. Their sound has evolved as their career has blossomed, incorporating diverse influences such as Rock, Punk, New Wave, Pop, Emo, and Dance music. Led by singer Hayley Williams, a dynamic performer with a four-octave vocal range, the band is known for hits like “Ain’t It Fun,” “Decode,” “Hard Times,” and “This Is Why.” Students of all instruments will find worthwhile challenges in the band’s tight hooks and varied sonic palette, which often includes synths, strings, and marimba in addition to the standard Rock instruments.
Southern Rock encompasses more than just music generated by bands south of the Mason-Dixon Line.
It’s a vibe and emotion that stems from a long painful history of racism, oppression, economic hardship, and classism. However the very spirit of Southern Rock is one of healing and reconciliation.
Rock and Roll has deep roots in the South, and this show will feature bluesy ‘70s southern rockers like The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, and Molly Hatchet, along with modern practitioners like Gary Clark Jr., Tedeschi-Trucks Band, The Black Crowes, and Larkin Poe. The Southern Rock show will thrust guitar players to the forefront with guitar harmonies and advanced soloing that often goes beyond the pentatonic scale. Bass players will dig deep into groove playing. Drummers will learn to play through different feels like shuffles, boogies, and half-time and double-time transitions. Keyboardists will be challenged with new styles as they utilize diverse sounds ranging from piano to Hammond organ to Rhodes electric piano. Vocalists will gain an understanding of Southern-style harmony and emotive singing. This show offers many challenges for ambitious and experienced players!
Garage Blues will cover the raw and blues based power of rock n' roll. In a full circle moment starting in the late 1960's inspired by the bands of the British Invasion who were inspired by legendary American blues artists, many groups emerged with a fierce and raw blues based edgy rock sound. Bands like The Sonics and The MC5 combined blues, pop and proto-punk to create a magical sound. In the early 2000's we saw a revival of this genre with major bands like The White Stripes and The Black Keys leading the way. Fuzzed out guitars and disorted vocals make this sound energetic and raw. This is a high energy and fun show that will challenge all musicians in thier craft and stage presence.
Easy Listening. Dad Rock. The West Coast Sound. Whatever nomenclature you choose, Yacht Rock music has survived the test of time and has made an explosive, full-steam-ahead resurgence in today’s popular music. Mostly emerging from the late 70s to early 80s, Yacht Rock’s mellow moods and relaxing vibes overshadow the sublime musicianship and songwriting skills of artists like Steely Dan, Toto, Hall and Oates, The Doobie Brothers, Carole King, and many more. Steeped in jazz, R&B, and dense harmony theory, these songs feature collaborations between some of the best studio musicians in history. These enduring songs will surprise and challenge even the most advanced SoR student. There are multi-layered vocal harmonies for singers, jazz-inspired guitar parts and solos, legendary grooves for bassists and drummers, and intricate keyboard parts utilizing what were, at the time, innovative electric pianos and synthesizers.
