Today's special An Artist Is Born birthday shoutout goes out in remembrance of SYD BARRETT (1946). A singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, Barrett is best known as a founding member of legendary English rock band PINK FLOYD. Barrett is credited with naming the group and was a major factor when it came to their early music, as he was initially the band's lead vocalist, guitarist and primary songwriter. He is also recognized for his innovative guitar work, experimenting with dissonance, distortion, and feedback techniques. Barrett left Pink Floyd in 1968 and pursued a solo career, releasing two albums before retiring from music for good. Unfortunately, Barrett passed away in 2006 at the age of 60 due to pancreatic cancer.

Other notable music birthdays today include Fairport Convention singer Sandy Denny (1947), Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds (1951), AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young (1953), Sundays bassist Paul Brindley (1963), Frankie Goes To Hollywood bassist Mark O'Toole (1964), singer Andrew Wood (1966), and Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner (1986).
