Rock 101 music program in Burlington for kids and beginners
Rock 101
Ages 8-13

Rock 101 is one of School of Rock Burlington's top programs for kids and beginners. Students have one weekly group rehearsal where they learn to play classic rock songs that have been simplified for beginner musicians. Additionally, Rock 101 students in Burlington have a weekly private music lesson with an instructor who helps them learn the concepts and skills behind their performance songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our music programs for kids in Burlington are designed to get students on stage performing, with the goal of building strong musical proficiency. Younger students at School of Rock Burlington who have participated in the Rookies program can move to our Rock 101 music program once they’re ready. Additionally, students (typically ages 8 to 13-years-old) can begin Rock 101 without any prior experience. The goal of this rock program is to quickly develop a basic competence on students’ chosen instruments before moving on to our famous Performance Program.

Ages 8-18

The Performance Program at School of Rock Burlington is our hallmark music program, where tens of thousands of students enroll each year. It consists of a weekly group rehearsal where kids and teens learn by playing rock music's most iconic songs with a band composed of their peers. Students are assigned songs and parts that are tailored to them based on their age, experience and ability to learn new skills and concepts. Students then work through their parts in weekly private music lessons, refining the skills and concepts that those songs introduce. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare kids and teens for live performances. Every few months, School of Rock Burlington Performance Program students take the stage and play at local Burlington music venues in front of a live audience.

The Path to Take the Stage

School of Rock Burlington's music programs for kids and teens are designed to inspire by getting students on stage and performing. All of our other music education programs focus on readying students for our famous Performance Program. This is where students develop incredible musical skills. Performance Program students have often gone through our Rock 101 program first or have some previous basic music experience. These young musicians will have custom development plans outlined by their instructors with key concepts reinforced during private lessons and group rehearsals, all with the goal of performing live at a Burlington music venue.

Rookies music program for children in Burlington
Rookies
Ages 6-7

At School of Rock Burlington, our music program for children with no previous musical experience (typically ages 6 to 7-years-old) is called Rookies. Rookies students have one weekly group music lesson where they learn fundamentals like chords, rhythm and song structure. Kids get to learn and experiment with multiple instruments so they can later decide which one they ultimately want to continue pursuing in Rock 101.

The Path to Take the Stage

All of our music programs are designed to inspire students to learn and develop a strong musical proficiency. At School of Rock Burlington, younger students who are not ready for a more comprehensive program like Rock 101 can start in Rookies. Additionally, students who have completed the Little Wing program will progress into the Rookies music program. No prior musical experience is needed for Rookies. Once your child is ready for private music lessons (typically older than first or second graders), they will graduate into our Rock 101 program.

At School of Rock Burlington our Little Wing music program for preschoolers and toddlers teaches students foundational music skills by playing games and participating in other interactive musical activities. Little Wing students have one weekly group music lesson in which they use classic rock songs to learn about rhythm, song structure, melody and dynamics through play.

The Path to Take the Stage

The Little Wing music program is the first step in a young musician's journey. At School of Rock Burlington, toddlers and preschoolers who show an interest in music should start with Little Wing. As they get older, they will progress into the Rookies program, followed by Rock 101 and the Performance Program.

Songwriting
Age 12 and over

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens teaches the fundamentals of songwriting, arrangement and music theory, and helps students compose original works.  At School of Rock Burlington, songwriting students receive one weekly private lesson where they learn concepts, technique and theory on an instrument of their choice. These principles are then applied in a weekly group lesson where students work together on songwriting exercises and lyrical workshops.  Every few months, Songwriting students take the stage to perform or band together to record their original songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens in Burlington is designed to create musical proficiency through the creation of original music. Students at School of Rock Burlington who have completed our Rock 101 program can move to our Songwriting program once they’re ready. Additionally, new students who have prior experience with and basic knowledge of an instrument can also begin Songwriting. The program culminates with a live showcase where students perform their original compositions in bands at a local music venue. Students taking the Songwriting Program online will remotely record their original songs to produce a demo of the class's music.

At School of Rock Burlington, our students can take online, one-on-one music instruction from the comfort of their homes. We call this program School of Rock Remote. This online music program contains weekly one-on-one instruction conducted by our expert School of Rock instructors in a safe virtual lesson room.
 
Students will receive their training using our proprietary education program, The School of Rock Method™, which couples live video lessons with our proprietary Method App™, SongFirst Approach™ and Method Books™.

School of Rock’s online music lesson program is no exception. Online guitar lessons, online piano lessons, online drum lessons, online singing lessons and online bass guitar lessons are all offered through the School of Rock Remote online program.

Ages 18+

School of Rock Burlington's Adult Program is for students over 18 years old who are looking to either improve their musical proficiency or pick up an instrument with no prior musical experience. As with most School of Rock music programs, the Adult Program uses a performance-based music education approach. This means the curriculum focuses on learning music concepts and applying them in a live performance setting. Our Adult Music Program includes one weekly private music lesson and a weekly group rehearsal. Every student at School of Rock Burlington is placed in a band of fellow adults and then assigned specific songs as a way of learning key music concepts and skills. Adult students then take the stage to play at a live show in Burlington.

The School of Rock Burlington Adult Program is open to all experience levels and each student will follow a customized learning plan developed by their instructor. Adult students will work together during rehearsal to prepare for a live performance at a real rock venue in Burlington.

Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock Burlington House Band music program gives students under 18 the opportunity to join a gigging band composed of fellow musicians from their school. These students perform additional live shows throughout the year. All students in the Performance Program have the opportunity to audition for a spot in School of Rock Burlington's House Band. Once selected, House Band members become leaders in their School of Rock community and perform live shows at MA rock venues throughout the year.

The Path to Take the Stage

Performance is the core of School of Rock's educational approach. Therefore, we create additional opportunities for students to perform on stages throughout Burlington and the rest of MA. The House Band music program allows each school's most talented students the opportunity to join a band and play routinely in front of live audiences. Once a member, students will gain real music experience associated with gigging musicians and will become leaders and mentors inside the School of Rock community.

AllStars
Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock AllStars Tour takes the very best students from around the world and sends them on a nationwide summer tour across the United States. Less than 1% of School of Rock students are selected each year to represent School of Rock as an AllStar. All Performance Program students are eligible to audition for this prestigious program. The intensive audition process starts off with video submissions followed by live auditions. Once selected, AllStar students will have an authentic touring experience including traveling on a tour bus, doing tour publicity and starring in nightly performances at famous venues and festivals during a two-week tour.

Becoming an AllStar is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. They play on legendary stages large and small, including The Knitting Factory, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Troubadour and Lollapalooza. AllStar students often go on to have accomplished careers in the music industry. Former AllStars have gone on to become touring artists, star in Broadway musicals, get signed to record deals, become finalists on talent competitions like "The Voice" and "American Idol" and have other notable roles in the music industry.

At School of Rock we teach differently than other music schools in Burlington. Our curriculum is performance-based, meaning that we prepare students to perform. Mark Abruzzese
Owner, General Manager
A native of Stoneham, MA, Mark is a scientist by training with a BA from Dartmouth College in Earth Science and an MS from Stanford University in Geological & Environmental Sciences. At a young age, Mark had a sense he wanted to teach, and found his passion in the high school classroom teaching chemistry, physics, and environmental science for 24 years, most at Menlo School in Atherton, CA, and Belmont High School in Belmont, MA.

Mark’s enthusiasm for music and education converged in this new endeavor to build, open, and lead School of Rock Burlington in 2023. A singer-songwriter primarily, Mark finds deep rewards in the journey of writing and performing original songs. He released his debut album under the name Deviant Folk in 2021 and is working to record and release dozens more of the compositions he has been performing at venues like The Bebop Music House in Boston and Lily P’s Fried Chicken and Oysters in Cambridge (the new home of Bluegrass Tuesdays after decades at The Cantab Lounge).

Mark's list of influences is long and includes the likes of Tom Petty, John Prine, Ani Difranco, Greg Brown, Van Halen, Fleetwood Mac, Journey, AC/DC, Red Hot Chili Peppers, James Brown, Steve Miller Band, Bela Fleck, and Tony Rice. Mark plays acoustic and electric guitar, electric and upright bass, and mandolin. At School of Rock Burlington, you will find him coaching ensembles, filling in on a variety of lessons, and reminding everyone that enthusiasm is contagious!

Celine has been passionate about music from a very young age. Starting first on piano and then vocal lessons at the age of 5, she participated in concert band and choir through graduation from Reading Memorial High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Salem State University with a double major in Music (Voice).

Celine absolutely loves singing and admires vocalists such as Amy Winehouse, Rachael Price of Lake Street Dive, Adele, and Lady Gaga. Celine also has a healthy love of classic rock and modern country! Music has always surrounded her, and being able to share her love of music with others has always brought her the most joy. She is very excited to bring her passion and love of music to the School of Rock Burlington as the Studio Coordinator! Ben began drumming when he was just 10 years old and began lessons at Jack’s Drum Shop in Hyannis, MA not long after. Launched into music performance by jazz and marching bands in high school, he decided to pursue a career in it, earning a BA from Berklee College of Music in 2022.

Over the years, Ben has had the chance to see some great shows in the Boston area to fuel a passion for live performance: Red Hot Chili Peppers at TD Garden, Foo Fighters at Fenway Park, Father John Misty at Leader Bank Pavilion, and Toledo at Brighton Music Hall. Ben describes music as a mode of self-expression and connection with others, and teaching as providing students the tools to achieve that kind of communication. This perspective aligns perfectly with the mission of School of Rock! Ben performs locally at venues like The Rockwell and Modern Theatre with Champagne Charlie & the Wah Wahs and BDJ and Jack Holland.

Riley LePere is a multi-instrumentalist from Fair Play, South Carolina who instructs on guitar, bass, and keys. After attending the specialized Governor’s School for the Arts & Humanities, Riley graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2023 and has been doing freelance performance, arrangement, and composition since.

Riley’s favorite artists and shows reveal something of his musical taste: Steely Dan, George Garzone, Joshua Redman, Theo Katzman, Derek Trucks, Glen Campbell, Gil Scott-Heron, Prince, clipping., D’Angelo and Cory Wong, whose act he was able to see at the House of Blues in Boston.

You can catch Riley playing saxophone and bass with artists like Makeout Palace, Houston Bernard, Elisabeth Waters, The Silver Arrow Band, American Midnight, Mizik Adik, and The Spencer Stevens Dectet at venues such as Monkey Palace, Bill’s Bar, The Jungle, Midway Cafe, The Berklee Performance Center, Cafe 939, Mechanics Hall, the Lilypad, Smith Recital Hall, the Greenville Symphony Hall, and the Woodstock Town Hall.

Hailing from nearby Belmont, MA, Liam is a product of School of Rock, starting as a student at the Watertown location followed by the Wakefield location. Liam was first introduced to music by his musician father and he picked up the guitar in the music room at a hospital. Liam says that his favorite thing about music is “the stress relief I get from it and how it takes me away from my worries.”

School of Rock Burlington is fortunate to have a resident Deadhead in Liam, who has seen Phil Lesh five times in recent years. The other artists he likes are diverse: Ween, Paramore, Death Grips, and Boris, representing unique and experimental musical offerings. Liam plays regularly in Vibe Check with friends from School of Rock as well as Toy Monsoon and Diamond Dave’s Daydream. His perspective on writing music is great: “The song takes a snapshot of my life and shows what I was experiencing and feeling at that time.”

Jamison Jones is a multi-instrumentalist from Kansas City, KS, and has played with musicians such as Louis Cato (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert), Lester Estelle (Kelly Clarkson and The Kelly Clarkson Show), Justin Raines (Neyo), Grammy Award-nominated producer/songwriter Alfredo Gonzales (Khalid), and James Morales (Jennifer Lopez) to name a few.

Jamie is the music director at School of Rock Burlington and plays guitar, bass, drums, keys, and vocals. Jamie has music directed and played on well over 2,500 performances in his 20 years of professional music.

Jamie enjoys artists such as Snarky Puppy, Jacob Collier, Coldplay, U2, and Adele.

Hannah MacNeil grew up right here in Burlington, MA, and has been singing since a teacher encouraged her after a school performance in the first grade! In her teens, Hannah added piano and guitar to her musical repertoire. Some of her favorite artists are Maren Morris, Kelsie Ballerini, SZA, Kelly Clarkson, Ghost, and Alice Cooper.

Hannah writes and records music as well; she draws inspiration from her immediate surroundings, the people she interacts with, and the events she witnesses. Hannah performs locally and loves the opportunity to bring people together and forge deep friendships through live performances. She instructs on vocals, keys, and guitar at School of Rock Burlington and School of Rock Wakefield.

Ben Knight is a force as a keyboard player and singer! He grew up just next door in Billerica, MA where he took piano and drum lessons as a kid, saying he was “pretty much obsessed with music.” He was lucky to have a touring blues band rehearsing regularly next door, sessions that he was invited to watch. This experience and investment are easy to see in Ben’s enthusiasm and repertoire.

Like many of us, Ben discovered a love of roots music in the movie The Blues Brothers from Aretha Franklin, Elvis, The Beatles, and Little Richard. Ben plays keys and sings in Broken Daisies, Hands to the Pillars, and the Ben Knight Band, playing dozens of gigs a year throughout the Boston area. Alongside teaching and directing at School of Rock, Ben enjoys writing music as well as directing music at his church in Chelmsford!

Gio believes that music is one of the universal truths of all people, that its sound and energy bring people from all walks of life together, and that it gives an artist a chance to share their stories and feelings while giving a listener the chance to immerse themselves in the energy and feelings the artist intended for them. Originally from nearby Andover, MA, Gio plays bass and sings lead vocals in the original funk band Populace, which has released several singles and played at Blue Ocean Music Hall, The Cabot Theater, The Rockwell, as well as many bars and clubs all over Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York.

Gio is a fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Maroon 5, U2, Sublime, and Disturbed because they are all so entertaining and give performances that keep the crowd captivated with an irresistible sound and stage presence. Gio loves teaching and working with kids and has an energy you will feel the moment you meet him!

Hailing from Madrid, Spain, Javi is a multi-instrumentalist who loves songwriting, production, and performance. He summarizes his love of music very succinctly: “I love forgetting about the real world and just losing myself in the playing.”

Javi’s short list of musical heroes is eclectic and amazing: Bob Dylan, Prince, Chet Baker, Angus Young, and Sting. Javi has released one album and performs in Boston, New York, and Los Angeles under the artist name Frank Maza.

Steven is from the South Shore of Massachusetts (Randolph), and studied drums with the late, great, and widely recognized Boston-area educator Dick DiCenso. Steven believes the magic of music is that it allows us to connect with others on a deeper level—a sentiment we all at the School of Rock in Burlington believe wholeheartedly!

Steven's list of his favorite artists is lengthy and telling: Blink-182, New Found Glory, The Story So Far, Childish Gambino, Mac Miller, Isaiah Rashad, Leon Bridges, Iration, Rebelution, Rage Against The Machine, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Turnover, Just Friends, Dirty Heads, Kid Cudi, Amine, Kendrick Lamar, Tribal Theory, Common Kings. He has seen some of the bigger acts at venues like TD Garden and Leader Bank Pavilion but has also frequented Boston classics The Middle East, TT the Bear’s Place (RIP), The Lilypad, and O’Brien’s Pub. Steven even performed at some of these smaller venues with his band Agree to Disagree until 2017.

What I like about the program is that my kids LOVE it!

This is so different from the music lessons that existed when I was a kid. These kids are actually making music and learning to play as a band. The performances are so impressive, and watching the kids gain confidence and express themselves on stage is priceless.

The structure around how kids learn is amazing.

Taking lessons to learn an instrument is one thing, but learning how to be a part of a band is on another level. These kids are learning how to communicate, respect people and their opinions, and how to be accountable for themselves. It’s more than just music here.

The kids have a great time while learning to play.

Lifelong skills and relationships are born here. The staff shares their passion for music and are very professional and accommodating. Wish I had this type of exposure to music when I was growing up!
