Rock 101
Ages 8-13

Rock 101 is one of School of Rock Woodland Hills's top programs for kids and beginners. Students have one weekly group rehearsal where they learn to play classic rock songs that have been simplified for beginner musicians. Additionally, Rock 101 students in Woodland Hills have a weekly private music lesson with an instructor who helps them learn the concepts and skills behind their performance songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our music programs for kids in West Hills are designed to get students on stage performing, with the goal of building strong musical proficiency. Younger students at School of Rock Woodland Hills who have participated in the Rookies program can move to our Rock 101 music program once they’re ready. Additionally, students (typically ages 8 to 13-years-old) can begin Rock 101 without any prior experience. The goal of this rock program is to quickly develop a basic competence on students’ chosen instruments before moving on to our famous Performance Program.

The Performance Program at School of Rock Woodland Hills is our hallmark music program, where tens of thousands of students enroll each year. It consists of a weekly group rehearsal where kids and teens learn by playing rock music's most iconic songs with a band composed of their peers. Students are assigned songs and parts that are tailored to them based on their age, experience and ability to learn new skills and concepts. Students then work through their parts in weekly private music lessons, refining the skills and concepts that those songs introduce. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare kids and teens for live performances. Every few months, School of Rock Woodland Hills Performance Program students take the stage and play at local West Hills music venues in front of a live audience.

The Path to Take the Stage

School of Rock Woodland Hills's music programs for kids and teens are designed to inspire by getting students on stage and performing. All of our other music education programs focus on readying students for our famous Performance Program. This is where students develop incredible musical skills. Performance Program students have often gone through our Rock 101 program first or have some previous basic music experience. These young musicians will have custom development plans outlined by their instructors with key concepts reinforced during private lessons and group rehearsals, all with the goal of performing live at a West Hills music venue.

Rookies music program for children in West Hills
Rookies
Ages 6-7

At School of Rock Woodland Hills, our music program for children with no previous musical experience (typically ages 6 to 7-years-old) is called Rookies. Rookies students have one weekly group music lesson where they learn fundamentals like chords, rhythm and song structure. Kids get to learn and experiment with multiple instruments so they can later decide which one they ultimately want to continue pursuing in Rock 101.

The Path to Take the Stage

All of our music programs are designed to inspire students to learn and develop a strong musical proficiency. At School of Rock Woodland Hills, younger students who are not ready for a more comprehensive program like Rock 101 can start in Rookies. Additionally, students who have completed the Little Wing program will progress into the Rookies music program. No prior musical experience is needed for Rookies. Once your child is ready for private music lessons (typically older than first or second graders), they will graduate into our Rock 101 program.

At School of Rock Woodland Hills our Little Wing music program for preschoolers and toddlers teaches students foundational music skills by playing games and participating in other interactive musical activities. Little Wing students have one weekly group music lesson in which they use classic rock songs to learn about rhythm, song structure, melody and dynamics through play.

The Path to Take the Stage

The Little Wing music program is the first step in a young musician's journey. At School of Rock Woodland Hills, toddlers and preschoolers who show an interest in music should start with Little Wing. As they get older, they will progress into the Rookies program, followed by Rock 101 and the Performance Program.

Songwriting
Age 12 and over

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens teaches the fundamentals of songwriting, arrangement and music theory, and helps students compose original works.  At School of Rock Woodland Hills, songwriting students receive one weekly private lesson where they learn concepts, technique and theory on an instrument of their choice. These principles are then applied in a weekly group lesson where students work together on songwriting exercises and lyrical workshops.  Every few months, Songwriting students take the stage to perform or band together to record their original songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens in West Hills is designed to create musical proficiency through the creation of original music. Students at School of Rock Woodland Hills who have completed our Rock 101 program can move to our Songwriting program once they’re ready. Additionally, new students who have prior experience with and basic knowledge of an instrument can also begin Songwriting. The program culminates with a live showcase where students perform their original compositions in bands at a local music venue. Students taking the Songwriting Program online will remotely record their original songs to produce a demo of the class's music.

At School of Rock Woodland Hills, our students can take online, one-on-one music instruction from the comfort of their homes. We call this program School of Rock Remote. This online music program contains weekly one-on-one instruction conducted by our expert School of Rock instructors in a safe virtual lesson room.
 
Students will receive their training using our proprietary education program, The School of Rock Method™, which couples live video lessons with our proprietary Method App™, SongFirst Approach™ and Method Books™.

School of Rock Woodland Hills's Adult Program is for students over 18 years old who are looking to either improve their musical proficiency or pick up an instrument with no prior musical experience. As with most School of Rock music programs, the Adult Program uses a performance-based music education approach. This means the curriculum focuses on learning music concepts and applying them in a live performance setting. Our Adult Music Program includes one weekly private music lesson and a weekly group rehearsal. Every student at School of Rock Woodland Hills is placed in a band of fellow adults and then assigned specific songs as a way of learning key music concepts and skills. Adult students then take the stage to play at a live show in West Hills.

The School of Rock Woodland Hills Adult Program is open to all experience levels and each student will follow a customized learning plan developed by their instructor. Adult students will work together during rehearsal to prepare for a live performance at a real rock venue in West Hills.

The School of Rock Woodland Hills House Band music program gives students under 18 the opportunity to join a gigging band composed of fellow musicians from their school. These students perform additional live shows throughout the year. All students in the Performance Program have the opportunity to audition for a spot in School of Rock Woodland Hills's House Band. Once selected, House Band members become leaders in their School of Rock community and perform live shows at CA rock venues throughout the year.

The Path to Take the Stage

Performance is the core of School of Rock's educational approach. Therefore, we create additional opportunities for students to perform on stages throughout West Hills and the rest of CA. The House Band music program allows each school's most talented students the opportunity to join a band and play routinely in front of live audiences. Once a member, students will gain real music experience associated with gigging musicians and will become leaders and mentors inside the School of Rock community.

Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock AllStars Tour takes the very best students from around the world and sends them on a nationwide summer tour across the United States. Less than 1% of School of Rock students are selected each year to represent School of Rock as an AllStar. All Performance Program students are eligible to audition for this prestigious program. The intensive audition process starts off with video submissions followed by live auditions. Once selected, AllStar students will have an authentic touring experience including traveling on a tour bus, doing tour publicity and starring in nightly performances at famous venues and festivals during a two-week tour.

Becoming an AllStar is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. They play on legendary stages large and small, including The Knitting Factory, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Troubadour and Lollapalooza. AllStar students often go on to have accomplished careers in the music industry. Former AllStars have gone on to become touring artists, star in Broadway musicals, get signed to record deals, become finalists on talent competitions like "The Voice" and "American Idol" and have other notable roles in the music industry.

Singing Teacher Emma Stuart
Emma Stuart
Vocal Teacher
Emma Stuart is a singer-songwriter born and raised in Los Angeles. She has been a working vocalist for over a decade. She has a three-octave range, easily able to sing soprano or alto. Her ability to blend and harmonize has kept her in high demand for recordings across many genres of music.

In addition to recording, producing, and performing her own music, Emma has been invited to sing in music festivals in London, choir competitions around the U.S., and charity events in Los Angeles. She most recently sang at Coachella 2018 with Bob Marley’s grandson, Skip Marley. She loves sharing her experience and knowledge with her students. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing her students feel confident in their gifts. Emma is a vocal instructor at School of Rock Woodland Hills.
Indigo Smith
Drum Teacher
As a freelance percussionist and drummer, Indigo Smith has performed with production outfits and recording artists such as Street Beat, Miki Howard, Aaron Marcellus, Revolutionary Council Afrobeat and Street Drum Corps. She was also a principle performer in the cast of "Stomp." As both a musician and a visual artist Indigo creates multimedia pieces, which incorporate paintings, sculpture, projection mapping and musical compositions. As a teacher Indigo has previously taught at School of Rock New York, and is excited to share her passion and knowledge here as a drum teacher at School of Rock Woodland Hills.

In Los Angeles, Felipe Melanio is an electric and acoustic guitarist, producer, and composer born in Brazil.

He began playing at age 11 when his uncle gave him the first guitar and started his professional life in 2002. He has more than 18 years of career. He graduated with a degree in techniques of honographic recording and production by the Estácio de Sa University.

He made part of the album "O Tempo É Agora" by the duo Anavitória, 20th Latin Grammy winner in Best Portuguese Language Contemporary Pop Album. He also recorded tracks in the albums "Ecos do Acaso e Casos de Caos" and "Ana Vilela" 19th Latin Grammy nominees.

He has worked as a sideman and recording musician for renowned artists such as Ana Carolina (Latin Grammy nominee), Golden Boys, Milton Guedes, Sidney Magal, Isabella Taviani and many others. He is also currently working for the world's second-largest broadcaster (Globo Television) as a recording musician. Felipe has more than 1,200 tracks registered in his name on ECAD.

Luke Nilan is a Los Angeles-based guitar and bass player turned producer and songwriter. He has written, produced, performed, and toured for various artists, television shows, and films including Charlie Puth, Jax, My Little Pony The Movie, Honey Girls (featuring Ashanti), Viceland, ABC, Fuse TV, Lisa Heller, Kings, Chris Jobe, and more.

Drum Teacher
Skylar Allingham is a professional studio and touring drummer/multi-percussionist in West Hills, CA. His music career started at 14 years old when he began regularly gigging with local blues, rock, and jazz artists in the Los Angeles and Riverside areas. This eventually led to him pursuing music in college, receiving a scholarship to attend the nationally accredited CSUN Jazz program. There he studied drumset, Latin percussion, jazz piano, and arranging.

Now out of college, Skylar spends his days diligently practicing, recording for artists or commercials, playing local shows, and occasionally touring with various corporate bands and pop artists.

Kiliyan Maguire is a touring rock vocalist and vocal educator with over 15 years of experience and a degree in Vocal Performance from the Musicians Institute. A Southern California native, Kiliyan has spent the last 7 years on the road with his band, Charming Liars, and had the opportunity to share the stage with bands such as Angels & Airwaves, The Struts, Glorious Sons, and others on multiple national and international tours. His band has cracked the Billboard top 40 in alternative and has been featured on multiple playlists, including Spotify's "New Noise," “New Alternative,” and “Alternative Beats,” as well as Apple Music's “New in Alternative.”

In 2017, Kiliyan worked directly with Sir Elton John to promote a cover of his song “I'm Still Standing” to raise money for the Recording Academy's Music Cares charity program. Kiliyan specializes in vocal technique and songwriting. He believes that although each student requires a completely unique teaching approach, one thing should always stay consistent: to nurture a laid-back environment where students feel comfortable enough to make mistakes, while also remaining vigilant and knowledgeable to help address their development in a way that feels direct and precise.

Luke Dalton Elmendorf previously taught at School of Rock San Diego. He has been playing guitar since he was 10 years old and works in musical aspects beyond simply playing, as both a music producer (recording, mixing, and mastering songs) as well as songwriting. Luke has a degree in Music Technology from Mira Costa College in Oceanside, California, and continues his studies at Cal State LA with the hopes of attaining his bachelor's degree by the spring of 2024.

Keeli Javan is a Music Industry Studies major at California State University, Northridge. As a musician, she is a singer-songwriter and a multi-instrumentalist who plays the drums, guitar, and piano.

The drums were Keeli's first instrument and she was enrolled in drum lessons from ages 12-18 at a music school in Studio City. She is also self-taught on the guitar and piano. Keeli loves learning new things when it comes to music and also enjoys being able to spread that knowledge and talent in hopes of inspiring others.

Darion Roberts is a keyboardist, vocalist, an award-winning songwriter, and a graduate of Berklee College of Music. Though he is classically trained, his main genre is rock, with a focus in progressive rock. His time at Berklee, however, expanded his musical horizons to include other genres such as jazz and neo-soul.

Darion has performed at venues like the White House and the Kennedy Center and he played keyboards on Dominant Funktion’s album and EP releases, as well as his own band's debut album, Trajectory. Darion moved to Los Angeles in 2021 and is excited to continue to pursue music on the west coast.

Tony Avalon is a professional musician specializing in guitar, bass, and composition. He graduated from the Musicians Institute (formerly known as the Guitar Institute of Technology) in Los Angeles, California, and was taught by the best: Tommy Tedesco, Tim Bogert, Keith Wyatt, and Joe Pass.

After graduating, Tony toured with legendary music acts such as Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell, Fabian, Leslie Gore, The Spinners, and more. He has also recorded for many television and film projects. Tony went on to create performance-based music programs and curricula for major companies partnering with the music education company Hal Leonard. Tony is proud to be a part of the School of Rock Woodland Hills team and is excited to share his musical knowledge with all new aspiring musicians.

Stella Kaplan is a multi-instrumentalist who plays Celtic, choro, rock, punk, classical, pop, R&B, bluegrass, country, and jazz. She is a graduate of the film scoring program at Berklee College of Music, where she was co-president of the Berklee Women Musicians Network. Stella is a contractor at Sparks & Shadows, a freelance composer for Primalhouse Music, the mandolinist for the Celtic band Silvertree, and bassist for various projects and happenings.

Stella was raised in Portland, Oregon, and got her start in music at 4 years old, studying violin for nine years before picking up mandolin, bass, guitar, keys, and drums. She has gigged at venues and festivals including the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Third Man Records, Mo Pop Festival, Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Crystal Ballroom, Doug Fir Lounge, Pickathon Festival, Agganis Arena, and in the Middle East.

Stella is a former School of Rock AllStar and she has been a member of several rock bands. She is a Queen fanatic for the ages.

Raul Rivera is a Los Angeles-based drummer, composer, and educator who has played and studied music for well over a decade. He received his BA in music performance with an emphasis in jazz studies from Cal State University Northridge. He has studied drums under Tina Raymond, Jason Harnell, Dave Tull, Brian Carmody, and Gene Coye.

Raul is active in the music scene as a side man and bandleader, doing studio work and small tours for artists as well as countless gigs all over LA and Orange County.

Raul also has a professional background in the marching arts playing rudimental snare drum. He was drum captain at Pasadena City College (2016) and toured the United States with the world-renowned Vanguard Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps in 2017 (champions).

Raul's other notable professional work includes his participation as a drummer in a McDonald's commercial that played during the Super Bowl and Grammy Awards and his performing for DJ Steve Angelo’s live set at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in 2017.

Brian Grabin is a gigging bassist and bass instructor at the School of Rock in West Hills, California. He has over 12 years of electric and upright bass experience. A Los Angeles native, Brian studied jazz at the USC Thornton School of Music where he honed his skills in performing, writing, and arranging. Since earning his Bachelor of Music in 2022, Brian has spent his time collaborating with musicians throughout the city and teaching lessons with an emphasis on bass technique and music theory.

Professionally, Brian plays all manner of genres in a variety of settings, including jazz clubs, musical theatre productions, pop shows, and (of course) rock concerts.

Margarita is a singer, songwriter, and classically trained pianist. After studying at New York University, she founded the cinematic rock band Edge of Paradise. The band has released three Billboard-charting albums, a graphic novel created by Margarita, and toured over 30 countries. Currently, the band is getting ready to release their next album on Napalm Records.

Margarita has recorded with legendary producers Howard Benson (Halestorm, Seether), Mike Plotnikoff (The Cranberries, Aerosmith), and Michael Wagener (Metallica). She has also collaborated with Neil Sanderson (Three Days Grace) and more. Margarita has taught for over 10 years, and her students have gone on to form their own bands and pursue music careers.
