- Queen meets Heart (Rehearsals Mondays 5:00 - 7:00 PM, Starting September 15, 2025) Queen formed in London, England in 1970 and achieved global success in no small part due to the charisma and supernatural talent of lead singer/ keyboard player Freddie Mercury. The band also featured Brian May (guitar), Roger Taylor (drums), and John Deacon (bass) - all virtuosos on their respective instruments. Queen is known as one of the most commercially successful bands of all time who also pushed artistic boundaries, a unique and enviable combination in the music industry. Their songwriting incorporated a wide range of musical styles from hard rock to theatrical ballads, of course culminating in the audacious and operatic “Bohemian Rhapsody”, one of Rock’s most celebrated masterpieces. Another genre-bending band that rose to fame in the 1970s was Heart. Fronted by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, Heart fused influences including hard rock, folk, and prog into a sound that was uniquely their own. Songs like “Crazy On You” and “Magic Man” catapulted their entry into international success, while their time on the billboard charts continued through the '80s and '90s as they achieved Number One hits with the songs “These Dreams” and “Alone”. Masterful technicians on guitar and vocals, the Wilson sisters continue to be a huge inspiration for young girls. Queen meets Heart is a fantastic show for all students and will provide endless educational opportunities and steep challenges for every experience level.
- Black Sabbath (Rehearsals Tuesdays 5:00 - 7:00 PM, Starting September 16, 2025) While the phrase “Heavy Metal” had been thrown about during the '60s, it took the arrival of Black Sabbath to fully realize the genre. Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward entered the studio in 1969 to record their debut album, Black Sabbath, in a single day, and the rest was history. Considered the pioneers of heavy metal, Black Sabbath are rock and roll legends who created some of the heaviest music of the 1960s and '70s. They’ve influenced practically every metal band who have emerged in their wake, including Metallica, Slayer, System of a Down, Slipknot, and Soundgarden. Guitarists and bassists will get experience with riff based melodies , improvisation, and alternate tunings, while drummers will be challenged to develop their feel and work through challenging tempo changes. Of course, vocalists will learn about the influential singing style of the late Ozzy Osbourne, not to mention other iconic metal vocalists such as Ronnie James Dio, represented in the band's later era. This show is sure to be incredibly fun for your student rocker, and will aid in their development to the next musical level!
- White Stripes vs Black Keys (Rehearsals Wednesdays 5:00 - 7:00 PM, Starting September 17, 2025) The White Stripes vs Black Keys show is one of the School of Rock shows that gives a nod to more contemporary bands who have forged their name in the music industry and become inspirations to others. Both bands rely heavily on Blues-based riffs and a Garage Rock sound, each with a stripped-down lineup of only two band members. The White Stripes are a lesson in simplicity and are the standout leaders of the early 2000’s Garage-Rock revival movement. While Jack White champions traditions of the past to peddle his reinterpretations of Blues, the Black Keys are a lesson in evolving into the new internet-age music era. Both Jack White and Dan Auerbach are known as some of the most influential modern-day rock guitarists. Aspiring guitarists can learn a soulful approach to playing in this show, and achieving the feel of these artists is a task for any level player. To serve the songs, drummers will be playing in the pocket and maintaining driving rhythms. This is a great show for vocalists at all levels, as both bands feature catchy and emotive melodies that heavily influenced modern Rock music.
- Rolling Stones (Rehearsals Thursdays 5:00 - 7:00 PM, Starting September 18, 2025) Dubbed 'The Greatest Rock & Roll Band In The World', The Rolling Stones have remained relevant and rocking for nearly 60 years. Though their songs are rooted in the Blues that inspired them to pursue music, throughout their legendary career they have incorporated everything into their sound from Rock to Country to Blues to Punk to Disco. For an education in pocket, groove, stage presence, and tasteful lead playing, there are few equals to a Stones show. Keith Richards' guitar wizardry will serve as a masterclass for guitarists looking to expand their rhythmic prowess. Drummers will not only be tested on their ability to play for the song, but they will also have opportunities to explore percussion usage like bongos, congas, and shakers. Studying Mick Jagger’s stage moves and the creative vocal arrangements within the Rolling Stones catalog is an excellent learning experience for vocal students of all ages and skill levels. Keys players will enjoy learning from Ian Stewart, Jack Nitzsche, Nicky Hopkins, Billy Preston, and Ian McLagan - all legendary players who recorded and performed with the Stones. From standing tall on the front lines of the British Invasion to selling out stadiums in more recent times, The Rolling Stones are truly one of the most impactful and important Rock n’ Roll bands of all time, and they will continue to inspire future generations for years to come.
- Left of the Dial (Rehearsals Saturdays 3:00 - 5:00 PM, Starting September 20, 2025) The Alternative rock from a time before “alternative” was a genre, Left of the Dial refers to the underground rock featured on many college radio stations in the 1980s and early 1990s, before Grunge swept alternative music into the mainstream. These college stations often broadcast at lower frequencies, which were located on the far left side of the analog FM radio dial. The term “Left of the Dial” was coined in a song by The Replacements, and an eventual compilation album by Rhino Records further cemented the phrase as a nickname for this era of music. A few of the bands and artists from this era found mainstream success, but all of them began as DIY underdogs and were incredibly influential in the evolution of the Grunge and Indie Rock that defined rock music in the 90s and 2000s. Left of the Dial is known for its wide variety of musical styles and unique personalities, including artists like Sonic Youth, REM, The Pixies, Depeche Mode, Meat Puppets, Kate Bush, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, The Smiths, and Dinosaur Jr. Students of all instruments and experience levels can expect good challenges playing these songs that often still sound innovative, even today.
