Jimi Hendrix
Tribute to Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix is arguably the most influential guitarist in the history of Rock & Roll. Few other individuals have had as much widespread impact on how electric guitar is played, not to mention such a lasting musical and cultural legacy. Jimi was one of the greatest guitar players to ever walk the earth, but was also an incredible songwriter and an innovator in the recording studio as well. Hendrix’s first album,  Are You Experienced, one of the definitive albums of the Woodstock era, was released in 1967 and featured the singles” Purple Haze”, “Hey Joe”, “Stone Free”, “The Wind Cries Mary”, and “Foxey Lady” - all of which have become classic rock standards. Hendrix followed that up with two artistic and innovative works, Axis: Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland. The live recording, Band Of Gypsys, released in 1970, would be the final album released during his relatively short lifetime. With the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and later with Band of Gypsys, Hendrix and his bandmates took Blues and Jazz conventions and turned them upside down, creating a completely fresh sound. Jimi’s incredible technical ability and ingenious experimentation with guitar effects completely reinvented rock and roll guitar playing and influenced everyone who came after him.

Classic Soul
Classic Soul

Soul music takes root from African-American gospel and R&B in the mid-'50s. Artists such as Etta James, Smokey Robinson, Nina Simone, Sam Cooke, and Ray Charles pioneered the genre by combining the musical concepts of Gospel with non-religious lyrics and themes. The '60s established the sound we are most familiar with when we think of Soul music. Two of the primary record labels during the '60s that  mass-produced and promoted Soul music were Motown and Stax records, each which established its own signature sound. Motown Records out of Detroit combined elements from Pop music such as hooks and common chord patterns with a deep rhythmic feel to create a unique ‘Detroit’ Soul sound. Stax records out of Memphis managed to still highlight elements of Pop but focused more on R&B roots by releasing music with heavier use of organ and brass and featuring more artists with roots in Gospel music. Though the Stax sound could be more musically dense it still held up a lot of groove, often producing dance tracks that rivaled Motown’s. Other notable artists from different labels which impacted Soul include James Brown (King), Aretha Franklin (Atlantic), and the Isley Brothers (RCA Victor and later Motown). Soul music has developed and evolved throughout the later decades of the century, and has enjoyed a resurgence in the modern day. However, the one thing that remains constant is the deep sense of rhythm and groove-based, catchy songs that are derived from the African-American music of the '50s. Classic Soul is a great show choice for any student interested in fun yet challenging rhythm-based music with uplifting lyrical themes.

Rock n' Grohl
Rock n' Grohl

Rock 'n' Grohl (aka The Dave Grohl Show) is a killer show that covers quite a lot of musical ground on all instruments, featuring Grohl’s work with Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Queens Of The Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Probot, and more. This music is centered in the Hard Rock aesthetic but ranges from Grunge to Punk to Metal to Prog. Best known for his work in Foo Fighters and Nirvana, Dave Grohl is unanimously admired throughout the entertainment industry and continues to be a force to be reckoned with in the modern music scene. The Rock ‘n’ Grohl show is ideal for guitarists of every experience level, in that it encompasses a wide range of skills and techniques - from Nirvana’s rhythmic yet aggressive strumming to the Foo Fighters’ melodic and driving octaves to Queens of The Stone Age’s heavy but quirky leads and solos. Dave Grohl is especially well-known for his prowess behind the kit throughout his career, making this show a favorite for drummers. For vocalists, Foo Fighters songs provide great examples of the belting and chest voice techniques, and intermediate vocalists will be challenged by frequent dynamic changes and two-part harmonies.

Fleetwood Mac Rumors
Epic Album: Fleetwood Mac - Rumors

One of the world’s best-selling bands, Fleetwood Mac formed as a British Blues group in 1967 and morphed into a chart-topping British-American pop band in the mid-1970s. Despite several band member iterations, the Fleetwood Mac’s best known lineup featured Mick Fleetwood (drums), John McVie (bass), Lindsey Buckingham (guitar/vocals), Christine McVie (keys/vocals), and Stevie Nicks (vocals). It was this lineup that recorded their most successful and critically acclaimed Rumors album, which featured hits like ‘Dreams’, ‘Go Your Own Way’, ‘The Chain’ and ‘Don’t Stop’. We will pay tribute to this incredible album this summer by playing the full album live! Fleetwood Mac is an amazing band that will challenge vocal students to master harmonies, guitar players to learn the unorthodox fingerpicking style of Lindsey Buckingham, drummers to study Mick Fleetwood’s extremely versatile drumming, keyboardists to grasp how Christine McVie merged classical-training playing with rock improvisation, and bassists to learn from John McVie’s creative and rock-solid bass foundations.
