Music Director Ben Malmed
Ben Malmed
Music Director
Ben Malmed started his career at School of Rock in October 2010 as a 23-year-old and immediately fell in love with the mission and community. Watching students go from the lesson room to the stage, gaining confidence, and having fun continues to be a source of inspiration for him. In 2015, Ben was promoted to Music Director of School of Rock Bedford and named Music Director for AllStars Northeast in 2022.

Music of all kinds is held with great value in Ben's family and notably, his grandparents were professional singers at the Metropolitan Opera. Ben started piano lessons at 5 years old which gave him a strong foundation in music theory, metronome practice, and technique. The switch to other instruments was made easier as he decided to pursue rock music and take up guitar and bass. He eventually studied with some of the world's best musicians at Berklee College of Music.

Ben also works as a studio musician, producer, live sound engineer, bandmate, and performer. His original touring band, Fundimensionals, recorded two albums and performed at many concert venues and festivals before parting ways. They received local airplay on 107.1 The Peak for their song "Deer On The Hutch" and were featured in Relix Magazine.

Shows are a lot of fun.

I was very nervous when I started a Performance Program, but I felt very welcomed and comfortable very quickly. Shows are a lot of fun to be in and the people in them are very nice.

The performance aspect is great.

It is so amazing for the kids to get a chance to be a part of a group and learn what it's like to perform in front of people.

An invaluable experience.

The opportunity for a child/teen to learn an instrument AND play in a band setting culminating in a live performance is an invaluable experience that has no equal.

Our son loves this program.

We loved that he improved so much. He took guitar lessons for four years before School of Rock and didn't really make much progress. In one week at one of the summer camps he improved so much.

Being in a band promotes learning and growth.

"Being in a band has been a great way for my son to learn and grow as a person. He improves musical skills and other life lessons, like what it means to not want to let your band members down, how to make mistakes and move forward, and how to be supportive to others."
