Owner Steve McFarland
Steve McFarland
Owner
Steve began his musical journey at age 16 playing along to bands like Kiss, Aerosmith, Van Halen, and Rush. Okay, it was air guitar, but he was a rocking pretender from an early age!

Steve wished School of Rock had been around when he was young. After seeing his children take endless lessons without motivation, the idea of getting kids on stage with School of Rock just made sense. Steve has a sports background and coached youth sports for many years, so the concept of School of Rock was natural to him: individual lessons (practice), group rehearsals (team practice), and the rock show (the game).

“I’ve always wondered why some people ‘make’ their kids take an instrument just because they think it’s a good idea to learn an instrument. You don’t hear of anyone making their kids take a sport and never playing on a team or in a game. Why make them take endless lessons with no chance to perform?”

As the owner, Steve challenges his team to enrich kids’ lives through music lessons, performances, camps or just hanging out with some new friends. Along with the School of Rock in Carmel, IN, Steve also owns two additional School of Rock locations in Indiana and a location in each of South Carolina and Wisconsin.
Manager of Franchise Operations Matt McFarland
Matt McFarland
Manager of Franchise Operations
Matt is our manager of franchise operations. He was one of the first drum students at his local School of Rock in Carmel, IN back in 2012. Although he did not continue his drumming bug, School of Rock is still a big part of his life.

Matt pursued video production in college and worked in that field after graduating but quickly realized it was not his true passion. He found his way back to School of Rock, starting as a studio coordinator in Carmel, then rising to the General Manager position at the Fishers, IN location. Shortly after visiting Charleston for the first time in 2021, Matt and his wife Mandy decided they wanted to open a school in the Charleston area. Since moving to the area in the Spring of 2022, they have since made South Carolina their home.

In his role, Matt helps coach each general manager and ensures they are following the School of Rock curriculum to provide the absolute best experience to every student.
General Manager Allyssa Huff
Allyssa Huff
General Manager
Allyssa’s musical journey began when she was just a toddler and sang along to Disney movies. In the following years, she got involved in her community theater productions, joined elementary and middle school choirs, and continued to sing at home for her family and friends. In high school, Allyssa was lucky enough to be selected as the school’s jazz band vocalist, which took her to stages at Disney World and the Smoky Mountain Music Festival. After earning her degree in public and organizational communication from Ball State University, Allyssa spent a few years gigging and touring with a lively funk rock group of college friends and her passion for the stage grew even more.

Allyssa began her School of Rock career in 2020, opening Indiana’s fourth school in Zionsville, Indiana. Since then, she has had the honor of being the General Manager of two schools, traveling to Summerfest and Rock in Rio with student bands, and being the Tour Coordinator for a team of School of Rock AllStars.

Through School of Rock, Allyssa has met many new friends, heard countless inspiring stories, and cried like a baby at an embarrassing amount of student shows. She is incredibly thankful and could not be more excited for whatever is to come next.
Assistant General Manager Mitch Rhodes
Mitch Rhodes
Assistant General Manager
Mitch started out playing the saxophone in fifth grade and played with school Jazz Bands and the Marching Band. When he was 11 years old, he sifted through his dad's old records and heard David Gilmour's solo from the Pink Floyd song, "Money," and asked his dad for a guitar the next day.

Mitch graduated from Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) with a Bachelor of Music Technology in 2021 where he studied music composition, sound design, recording techniques as well as acoustics. He served as the resident guitarist in the Jazz Band and the Dis-Emsemble at IUPUI. Mitch loves sharing about what new progressive metal bands he's listening to and talking about guitar gear.
Music Director, Guitar Teacher Dave Lawson
Dave Lawson
Music Director, Guitar Teacher
Dave started playing trumpet in the fifth grade, along with piano lessons. His first performance in front of a large audience was with the Shortridge Junior High rap club at Bush Stadium in the seventh grade, and he quickly found peers in the eighth grade who wanted to start a punk band. That led to Dave picking up the guitar at 13 and he has played in dozens of bands in the ensuing years.

Dave maintained brass instrument chops and played in top-tier performance bands throughout high school, while also studying jazz guitar and playing in the competitive jazz band at Pike High School. Apart from recording in studios from the age of 16 on and touring both nationally and internationally from the age of 18 as a guitarist, he has also played bass and drums in a variety of bands and toured filling these roles as well. Dave currently plays in multiple bands that span territory ranging from country, heavy metal, classic rock, modern rock, and punk.
Joe Strakis
Guitar Teacher
Joe Strakis grew up on a musical diet of KISS, Van Halen, ZZ Top, Elvis Presley, Alice Cooper and a plethora of jazz legends (Coltrane, Miles, Wes Montgomery). This led to his obsession with the electric guitar by age 12. He formally studied jazz, fusion/blues and classical guitar, receiving his B.A. in Music Performance in the winter of 2008 from Columbia College Chicago under the tutelage of Chris Forte (blues/fusion), Dr. Angelo Favis (classical) and Steve Grismore (jazz). A steady dose of touring with several heavy metal and hard rock acts (centered around Chicago, IL and Sacramento, CA) followed his study. His main influences as a guitarist are Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen, Billy Gibbons, Eric Johnson, Ace Frehley, Wes Montgomery and David Gilmour (among so many others).

Andrew attended Indiana University where he studied Audio Engineering. He feels most at home onstage or in the studio with either one of his two bands: the metal/punk band Thlurm and the punk band Atom Tan.
Guitar Teacher Michael Johnson
Michael Johnson
Guitar Teacher
Michael has had a passion for music since the day he was born. He hit the stage for the first time in the fifth grade as the Beast in his school’s rendition of Beauty and the Beast. From that moment, Michael caught the show biz bug and followed the music into middle school where he joined the show choir and had the opportunity to travel and compete all over the state. As he neared high school, Michael’s musical direction took a turn when he fell in love with the electric guitar. After one chord, he was hooked and began learning everything he could about the instrument through videos online.

About a year into his self-teaching, Michael's grandparents signed him up for his first lesson at the School of Rock in Carmel, Indiana. As a School of Rock student, Michael learned from some of the best instructors and got to rock out on countless stages, performing everything from Tom Petty to Iron Maiden.

Michael also joined his high school jazz band, continued performing in show choir, and began his music theory education. After graduation, he continued his pursuit of musical excellence and still works hard to learn more every day.

Michael is thrilled to return to School of Rock Carmel as an instructor and to have the opportunity to share his love of music with a new generation of dreamers.

So Much Fun!

The teachers are committed and caring, and the experience compliments my daughter's academics beautifully. Great people, great experience, FUN!

Awesome Music and Concerts!

Our daughter is learning awesome music and we love going to her concerts instead of those long, dreaded recitals we had to sit through!

Great Staff!

The teachers are great and the administrators are very helpful. LOVE the concert aspect of it and the variety of genres the kids get to explore.

Now he voluntarily practices!

The band aspect is what sets it apart from traditional lessons. Our son took traditional drum lessons for over two years and it was always a struggle to get him to practice. With School of Rock he actually practices without us having to ask him, and he practices longer.

The instructors provide an inclusive atmosphere and culture for kids.
