Music Director Matt Aland
Matt Aaland
Music Director
A guitarist at his core and a multi-instrumentalist by nature, Matt brings a lifetime of stage, studio, and global performance experience to the students of School of Rock Clearwater. His musical journey began with punk rock rebellion, but a transformative high school mentor, John Syverson at Fargo South, opened the door to jazz, igniting a devotion to improvisation that defined his artistic identity.

That passion carried him through formal training at North Dakota State University (Music Education, under Dr. Matthew Patnode) and Berklee College of Music (Guitar Performance, studying with Chris Buono and Sal DiFusco). As a touring musician with the U.S. Army Band, he performed across the world on guitar, bass, and saxophone. And his time spent in the music industry in Los Angeles and Las Vegas showed him the inside of the professional music world.

A blues and jazz purist who found his way into metal, Matt also holds a deep reverence for punk, alternative, '90s grunge, and the raw energy of early 2000s emo. That genre-fluidity fuels his core belief: improvisation is the truest test of musicianship, and the music can speak across any boundary.

Since joining the School of Rock family in 2017, first in Geneva, IL, then spending five years at St. Pete before landing in Clearwater, his philosophy has never wavered. He treats young musicians at School of Rock Clearwater not as students to be molded, but as full artists who happen to be younger. His role isn't to dictate how music should be played; it's to help direct their already-burning passion into a voice that is unmistakably their own.

Reviews

What I like about the program is that my kids LOVE it!

This is so different from the music lessons that existed when I was a kid. These kids are actually making music and learning to play as a band. The performances are so impressive, and watching the kids gain confidence and express themselves on stage is priceless.

The structure around how kids learn is amazing.

Taking lessons to learn an instrument is one thing, but learning how to be a part of a band is on another level. These kids are learning how to communicate, respect people and their opinions, and how to be accountable for themselves. It’s more than just music here.

It's the best music program in the city.

Dedicated instructors and staff, vibrant atmosphere, and most importantly, it's fun! My 8-year-old has grown leaps and bounds in skill and personal confidence. If you're thinking about checking it out, don't wait, just do it!

The kids have a great time while learning to play.

Lifelong skills and relationships are born here. The staff shares their passion for music and are very professional and accommodating. Wish I had this type of exposure to music when I was growing up!
