Groot: the roots of grunge

"The Sound of Shadows" is an electrifying musical experience that takes the students on a journey through the origins and evolution of grunge, weaving together live performances with a compelling narrative that explores the cultural and musical influences that shaped this iconic genre. Starting at the height of the grunge movement, the show blends elements of punk rock, heavy metal, alternative rock, and folk music, creating a vibrant tapestry of sound and emotion.

**Punk Rock**: Bands like the Sex Pistols, The Ramones, and Black Flag inspired grunge musicians to embrace a rebellious attitude and a more unpolished, aggressive sound.

**Heavy Metal**: Bands like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin influenced the heavier, distorted guitar sounds found in grunge music.

**Alternative Rock**: The alternative rock movement of the 1980s, which included bands like R.E.M. and The Smiths, provided a framework for grunge musicians.

**Post-Punk and New Wave**: The experimental sounds and darker themes of post-punk bands and new wave artists influenced the atmospheric qualities and introspective lyrics often present in grunge.

**Folk and Acoustic Music**: Grunge also drew inspiration from folk music, particularly in its lyrical storytelling and acoustic elements. Artists like Neil Young and Bob Dylan influenced the introspective and narrative-driven songwriting characteristic of grunge.

**Indie Rock**: The indie rock scene was crucial in shaping the sound and aesthetic of grunge. Bands like Sonic Youth and Mudhoney contributed to the development of a more experimental and unrefined approach to rock music.

**Seattle Music Scene**: The local music scene, including bands like Green River and Soundgarden, was instrumental in fostering the grunge movement. The camaraderie and collaboration among local musicians helped to define the genre's sound.

"Groot" is not just a retrospective; it's a heartfelt tribute to a movement that continues to influence artists today. Whether you're a lifelong fan or new to the genre, this show promises to ignite your passion for the raw, authentic sound that changed the landscape of music forever.

Recording and Sound Production (12+ performance experience required)

Our Recording & Production Program for kids and teens is designed to empower students to develop the skills to produce their own recordings at home, by teaching the fundamentals of recording and mixing in a studio-like environment. Recording & Production students have often gone through our Rock 101 program first, or have some previous basic music experience. The program culminates with a listening party, where students showcase their recordings for family and friends. Whether you’re an aspiring musician or audio enthusiast, this class will equip you with the essential skills to create, record, and produce your own audio projects.

Key Topics

**Introduction to Sound and Music Theory**: Understand the basics of sound waves, frequency, and how music is structured. Learn about different genres and their unique characteristics.

**Recording Techniques**: Discover how to set up a recording studio, including microphone placement, signal flow, and best practices for capturing high-quality audio. Students will get hands-on experience with various microphones and instruments.

**Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs)**: Get familiar with popular DAWs. Learn how to navigate the software, record tracks, edit audio, and mix sounds.

**Music Production**: Dive into the process of creating music from scratch. Explore beat-making, sampling, and layering sounds to build your unique compositions.

**Mixing and Mastering**: Understand the art of mixing—balancing levels, applying effects, and ensuring clarity in your tracks. Learn the basics of mastering to prepare your final product for distribution.

By the end of the course, students will have produced their own audio projects, developed a solid understanding of recording and production techniques, and gained confidence in their creative abilities. They'll leave the season not only with new skills but also with the knowledge to continue exploring the world of sound and music beyond the classroom.
