Programs we offer

Rock 101 music program in Calgary for kids and beginners
Rock 101
Ages 8-13

Rock 101 is one of School of Rock Douglasdale's top programs for kids and beginners. Students have one weekly group rehearsal where they learn to play classic rock songs that have been simplified for beginner musicians. Additionally, Rock 101 students in Douglasdale have a weekly private music lesson with an instructor who helps them learn the concepts and skills behind their performance songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our music programs for kids in Calgary are designed to get students on stage performing, with the goal of building strong musical proficiency. Younger students at School of Rock Douglasdale who have participated in the Rookies program can move to our Rock 101 music program once they’re ready. Additionally, students (typically ages 8 to 13-years-old) can begin Rock 101 without any prior experience. The goal of this rock program is to quickly develop a basic competence on students’ chosen instruments before moving on to our famous Performance Program.

The Performance Program at School of Rock Douglasdale is our hallmark music program, where tens of thousands of students enroll each year. It consists of a weekly group rehearsal where kids and teens learn by playing rock music's most iconic songs with a band composed of their peers. Students are assigned songs and parts that are tailored to them based on their age, experience and ability to learn new skills and concepts. Students then work through their parts in weekly private music lessons, refining the skills and concepts that those songs introduce. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare kids and teens for live performances. Every few months, School of Rock Douglasdale Performance Program students take the stage and play at local Calgary music venues in front of a live audience.

The Path to Take the Stage

School of Rock Douglasdale's music programs for kids and teens are designed to inspire by getting students on stage and performing. All of our other music education programs focus on readying students for our famous Performance Program. This is where students develop incredible musical skills. Performance Program students have often gone through our Rock 101 program first or have some previous basic music experience. These young musicians will have custom development plans outlined by their instructors with key concepts reinforced during private lessons and group rehearsals, all with the goal of performing live at a Calgary music venue.

Rookies music program for children in Calgary
Rookies
Ages 4-7

At School of Rock Douglasdale, our music program for children with no previous musical experience (typically ages 4 to 7) is called Rookies. Rookies students have one weekly group music lesson where they learn fundamentals like chords, rhythm, and song structure. Kids get to learn and experiment with multiple instruments so they can later decide which one they ultimately want to continue pursuing in Rock 101.

The Path to Take the Stage

All of our music programs are designed to inspire students to learn and develop a strong musical proficiency. At School of Rock Douglasdale, younger students who are not ready for a more comprehensive program like Rock 101 can start in Rookies. Additionally, students who have completed the Little Wing program will progress into the Rookies music program. No prior musical experience is needed for Rookies. Once your child is ready for private music lessons (typically older than first or second graders), they will graduate into our Rock 101 program.

Ages 18+

School of Rock Douglasdale's Adult Program is for students over 18 years old who are looking to either improve their musical proficiency or pick up an instrument with no prior musical experience. As with most School of Rock music programs, the Adult Program uses a performance-based music education approach. This means the curriculum focuses on learning music concepts and applying them in a live performance setting. Our Adult Music Program includes one weekly private music lesson and a weekly group rehearsal. Every student at School of Rock Douglasdale is placed in a band of fellow adults and then assigned specific songs as a way of learning key music concepts and skills. Adult students then take the stage to play at a live show in Calgary.

The Path to Take the Stage

All of our music programs are designed to inspire by getting students on stage and performing, with the goal of building strong musical proficiency along the way. The School of Rock Douglasdale Adult Program is open to all experience levels and each student will follow a customized learning plan developed by their instructor. Adult students will work together during rehearsal to prepare for a live performance at a real rock venue in Calgary.

Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock Douglasdale House Band music program gives students under 18 the opportunity to join a gigging band composed of fellow musicians from their school. These students perform additional live shows throughout the year. All students in the Performance Program have the opportunity to audition for a spot in School of Rock Douglasdale's House Band. Once selected, House Band members become leaders in their School of Rock community and perform live shows at Alberta rock venues throughout the year.

The Path to Take the Stage

Performance is the core of School of Rock's educational approach. Therefore, we create additional opportunities for students to perform on stages throughout Calgary and the rest of Alberta. The House Band music program allows each school's most talented students the opportunity to join a band and play routinely in front of live audiences. Once a member, students will gain real music experience associated with gigging musicians and will become leaders and mentors inside the School of Rock community.

The AllStars national tour features the best child and teen musicians
AllStars
Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock AllStars Tour takes the very best students from around the world and sends them on a nationwide summer tour across the United States. Less than 1% of School of Rock students are selected each year to represent School of Rock as an AllStar. All Performance Program students are eligible to audition for this prestigious program. The intensive audition process starts off with video submissions followed by live auditions. Once selected, AllStar students will have an authentic touring experience including traveling on a tour bus, doing tour publicity and starring in nightly performances at famous venues and festivals during a two-week tour.

Becoming an AllStar is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. They play on legendary stages large and small, including The Knitting Factory, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Troubadour and Lollapalooza. AllStar students often go on to have accomplished careers in the music industry. Former AllStars have gone on to become touring artists, star in Broadway musicals, get signed to record deals, become finalists on talent competitions like "The Voice" and "American Idol" and have other notable roles in the music industry.

Beginner Keyboard Lessons for Kids

At School of Rock we teach differently than other music schools in Calgary. Our curriculum is performance-based, meaning that we prepare students to perform. Our piano lessons for beginners combine weekly private instruction with weekly band rehearsals. At School of Rock Douglasdale, our beginner keyboard lessons for kids take key concepts and music fundamentals—finger placement, scales, key differentiation and more—and teach them through popular rock songs. Adam has been teaching guitar and drums since 2010. He has varied musical experience: piano lessons, church, school band, Rock and Metal bands, teaching all ages and all styles. He currently plays with a country/classic rock band Moral Hazard. Some of his students have gone on to America's Got Talent and have played at Saddledome. Adam has developed drumming content for one of his disabled students including drumming videos which have over 20 million views including well known drummers, musicians, companies and celebrities around the world. Adam now teaches at School of Rock Douglasdale.

Jason

Jason has been singing since the age of five and got his first guitar when he was ten, later picking up the bass guitar and drums. He has been in hard Rock/ metal band Dark Stone for over 14 years,, and has had the honour to open up for great bands such as Monster Truck, Headstones, Godsmack, and even SLASH/ Myles Kennedy.

Jason has also received classical vocal training from the one and only Beverly Delich (Michael Buble's vocal teacher). He has played in multiple bands, recently recording and performing with Bravis Tarker, who have released mulitple songs this year. In addition to teaching at School of Rock Douglasdale, Jason has extensive experience in performing, touring, and recording, and has also worked with record producers Jeff Blue and Mike Gonsolin.

Flo is a French vocal coach and professional singer with experience both in France and North America.

Over the past six years, he's had the pleasure of teaching voice to a wide range of students, and has performed in more than 350 concerts across the globe, including in France, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Italy, Russia, the Czech Republic and the U.S.

Flo trained in vocal coaching with Melissa Cross, and offers lessons in both English and French at School of Rock Douglasdale.

Drum Teacher
Mark has been with School of Rock since the franchise opened in Calgary. He started playing drums in 1985 and has been teaching since 2005. In Regina, Saskatchewan, Mark played in the alternative rock band Mrs. Svenson from 1988 until 2001. In Calgary, he played with XL Birdsuit, ¡Ole!, Coverage (a Descendents/ALL cover band) and is still a part of the experimental music scene. Mark is a multi-instrumentalist who is open to all musical genres and currently teaches at School of Rock Douglasdale.

John

John has been playing music since the age of eight and hasn't stopped. He started on piano and then learned bass at 13 followed by French horn. John played with the Lethbridge Symphony, Red Deer Symphony, and the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble. He also toured the U.K. with various symphonies then played bass and sang with a Beatles tribute called "8 Days a Week" at the famous Cavern Club in Liverpool.

John has sung and played professionally with tribute acts The Grand Hotel (Deep Purple tribute), Invisible Son (The Police tribute), Edward the Great (Iron Maiden tribute), PINK 4REUD (Pink Floyd tribute), and YYC (Rush tribute), this summer opening for Streetheart and Toque at Cornstock!

John recently played bass guitar, sang, and recorded with Manny Charlton (one of the founding members of Nazareth). John teaches bass guitar, guitar, keyboard + piano, theory, and vocals at School of Rock Douglasdale.

Julie (she/they) is a musician, entertainer, and instructor in the Calgary area. She has been teaching with School of Rock since 2022, and has over a decade of music instruction history in classical, pop, performance, theory, and composition. Julie began her musical journey in classical violin & piano, and attended University of Calgary for classical voice & composition from 2018-2022. She performs as the frontperson in her alt-pop project SHY FRiEND and spends her time writing, producing, and recording music for her project as well as many other local artists. Julie prides herself in music instruction tailored to the goals & comfort of every student, with a focus on a well-rounded experience that translates into any musical endeavor they strive towards. Julie loves expanding her ability alongside her students while teaching voice, piano, guitar, ukulele, and a variety of group classes at School of Rock Douglasdale.

Jake is a Berklee graduate and teaches at School of Rock Douglasdale, specializing in rock guitar. He started playing at ten years old, learning Nirvana, Green Day and The Offspring songs. Currently, Jake is the guitar player for the bands JANE DECAY and Bravis Tarker. His influences include Paul Gilbert, Mark Tremonti, Marty Friedman and James Hetfield.

Connor

Connor’s love for music ignited at age six while singing along to acts like Linkin Park and Neil Diamond. By nine, he had picked up the guitar, dreaming of playing in a band. He has immersed himself in writing and performing metal and rock music for over two decades.

At 16, Connor and his band The Elegance traveled to Kansas City to record their first professional album. He was the lead singer of the band at the time. Working alongside an acclaimed engineer and producer in the studio ignited Connor's passion for production, engineering, and mixing.

As a musician, Connor has been a member of the bands Snakepit and Wander and now leads his solo project, End Ever. End Ever focuses on Connor's brand of metalcore, often utilizing seven-string guitars to convey a broad range of melody and emotion. His focus in each project has always been to drive heavy music forward through soulful songs and engaging performances.

As a teacher at School of Rock Douglasdale, Connor views music as a journey of self-discovery. He guides students in balancing technical skills with their aspirations, helping them create and perform music that resonates with them. Having had many incredible teachers and mentors, Connor feels honoured to pass on the knowledge shared with him over the years. Connor’s greatest joy is helping others find their own musical voice.

Frances, a graduate of Red Deer College in Early Childhood Education, and has been teaching music to young and old for for over 30 years. When not teaching at School of Rock Douglasdale, she is a working musician in and around Calgary and Alberta, playing with the band Big Yellow Van and the duo Frankie and Johnnie. Frances also has a residency at The Boarder Crossing hosting weekly jam nights.

As a former student turned teacher at School of Rock Douglasdale, Marco knows exactly what it’s like to grow as a musician in the School of Rock community. With years of experience on both guitar and drums, Marco has a strong foundation in a variety of genres, including classic rock, heavy metal, and indie, and seeks to help students build solid technique while encouraging them to find their own voice on their instrument. Marco is currently a guitarist/backing vocalist in Prisoner, and has played a number of shows across Canada.

Max is a guitarist, drummer, and proud graduate of the School of Rock program. Having toured with the School of Rock Allstars twice, Max brings performance experience and passion into each lesson. While open to all genres, he gravitates towards progressive rock and metal, drawing inspiration from Guthrie Govan, Tom Monda, and John Petrucci.

Outside of teaching at School of Rock Douglasdale, Max plays drums in the band Sicklad, has performed/recorded with several bands, and has experience mixing/mastering. Max teaches with a goal of inspiring passion, creativity, and excitement for music!
