WE BELIEVE SCHOOL Of rock summer programs prevent "brain drain"
There's a myriad of research that points to the two month brain drain experienced by students on summer break. This phenomenon doesn't just apply to academic studies, but is prevalent in musicians as well! Gains throughout the school year are taxed when students put aside their instrument for the summer. Muscle memory fades and must be regained upon starting back up in the fall. And let's not even talk about how students lose social connections without their regular programming over summer. We strongly encourage our families to consider these factors when deciding "what to do" with School of Rock over the summer. See below for several options that might help to prevent music-related "brain drain."
BEST OF THE 2000s
The 2000s Show offers a huge variety of music that is sure to satiate any student’s musical appetite. The 2000s has produced more and more artists whose music blends and defies genres, and draws from a greater variety of influences than was available at any previous point in history. At the same time, more traditional bands and artists, including some who started making music in the twentieth century, have adapted to the changing times and continued to thrive. Though it is impossible to place the varied music of the 2000s into one definable style or category, certain themes emerge: 1) an interest in and revival of ‘retro’ sounds using modern technology and sensibilities, and 2) songwriting that draws from a huge diversity of genres and styles, making 21st-century ‘rock’ bands even harder to pin down to one style alone. Examples of blockbuster artists that might be in the setlist include Foo Fighters, RHCP, Evanescence, Fall Out Boy, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, Paramore, White Stripes, Adele, The Strokes, Jet, System of a Down, The Darkness, Tool, and many others. This is a perfect show for students of all ages and experience levels and will offer many opportunities to perform across all genres!
BLUES LEGENDS
The Blues is a genre that transcends time and cultural boundaries, and has influenced, in some capacity, nearly every song that has come since its original inception. This show is a crash course in the great blues players over the years and within its setlist, it shows how the torch was passed throughout the years. From the original blues pioneers to the '80s blues revival and beyond, this show is not only a great lesson in instrument improvisation, but also why the blues will never fade away! Traditional artists like Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Koko Taylor, and Albert King will be showcased, along with more contemporary blues masters like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page, and Gary Clark Jr. Throughout the many changes in blues music over the years, it still remains the most influential genre from which all modern rock is derived. One of the greatest aspects of the genre is the way it remembers its creators, innovators, and pioneers. It truly is music that will continue to stand the test of time as we celebrate those that we call “Blues Legends”.
RAMONES
The Ramones invented what is now commonly known as Punk. Hailing from Forest Hills, Queens, the Ramones invented a style of music that distilled Rock and Roll into its potent essence: short songs with fast tempos delivered in a rapid-fire blast that left the audience catching their breath. The Ramones’ influence cannot be overstated. In the mid 70s at the height of Arena Rock, the Ramones took Rock and Roll back to basics using tight, catchy, minimalist arrangements. Along the way they inspired thousands of bands and created one of the most recognizable sounds in Rock and Roll. Alongside Black Sabbath, they are one of the rare bands that defined a new genre. The Ramones are Punk pioneers, providing a fun and educational show for young or inexperienced students to cut their teeth in while giving more advanced students the opportunity to develop their stage presence while delving into some incredibly innovative songs that brought Punk Rock to the forefront of the music industry.
RIOT GRRRLS & EMO BOYS
Two iconic movements born of the punk rock world come together as this classic show returns to School of Rock Katy. In one corner, the high energy sociopolitical anthems from bands like Bikini Kill, Bratmobile and The Julie Ruin will unapologetically melt some faces. In the other corner, riff-heavy hometown ballads from bands like The All-American Rejects, My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy will have fists pumping and elder emos two-stepping in the pit. This show will allow students from various backgrounds and skill levels to improve their performance while also learning how to express themselves onstage!
DRUMMAGEDDON
Drums and percussion have been around for as long as recorded history, but in the past hundred years, and with the creation of the drum kit, the instrument has reached new groundbreaking heights. The drums are the foundation on what the rest of the band can build upon. From a Blues Shuffle to modern-day “Trap” Hi-Hats, the drum is an ever-changing and evolving instrument that lays the foundation for the music that we all love and cherish. Some of the drum legends who will be showcased in the Drumageddon Show are Neil Peart (Rush), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Ginger Baker (Cream), Danny Carey (Tool). Artists who incorporated multiple drummers or large percussion sections, such as The Allman Brothers Band, Santana, and The Grateful Dead, will also be featured in this show. Through this wide and diverse setlist, students will see the evolution of drumming throughout the years, and how the great innovators of the instrument continued to influence rock music’s history. This is an extremely important educational opportunity for drum students as well as all other instrumentalists to pay homage to the greatest drummers of the modern era.
JOAN JETT vs. Pat benatar
Joan Jett and Pat Benatar - these iconic rockers both rose to prominence in the late 1970s, and became international superstars in the early 1980s. Their styles are different but complement each other well - both are grounded in classic guitar rock. However, Joan Jett embraces more of a punk aesthetic while Pat Benatar employs a more Hard Rock edge. Joan Jett’s initial entry into the music scene was as a guitarist for the all-girl group The Runaways. Flanked by fellow guitarist Lita Ford, The Runaways created a following in the mid '70s as a Hard Rock/Punk band. Jett decided to branch off on her own to form Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. In 1981, The Blackhearts released the mega-hit “I Love Rock and Roll” and cemented their place in '80s rock culture. Pat Benatar's first major LP In The Heat Of The Night was released in 1979, and includes her breakthrough single “Heartbreaker” which reached the Billboard Top 25 in the US. Benatar continued to produce chart-topping hits in the '80s and inspired many female-fronted bands to become prominent in the music industry. This is a great show for up-and-coming players, but there are definitely challenges for advanced students here, particularly with some of Pat Benatar’s tricky song arrangements.
DIO-OLOGY
Of all the artists in the heavy music world, few have had careers as impressive and diverse as the great Ronnie James Dio. From the piano-laden blues rock of Elf, to the classical-tinged hard rock of Rainbow, to his multiple legendary stints as the frontman of Black Sabbath, Dio already made a name for himself as a proper titan years before etching his own name into the marble of the heavy metal Pantheon with his namesake band. This show is a must for any heavy metal fan who wants to explore the roots of the genre, covering material spanning Dio’s entire career (you might even find yourself learning some early ‘60s doo-wop courtesy of Ronnie Dio and the Prophets; nothing Dio is off the table)!
THE BEATLES
John! Paul! George! Ringo! Arguably the most musically diverse and iconic band of the 1960s British Invasion, The Beatles set the standard for which bands still strive in today’s music. The Beatles are one of the few bands to literally create their own mythos - the lads from Liverpool are as enigmatic intellectually as they are musically. This show doesn’t merely center around the most well-known band of all time, it also happens to employ the most diverse musical range and skill-level window of any artist show. There are raucous three chord garage rock bangers of the early Beatles era, and late sixties era proto-prog technical masterpieces. Drummers will learn the true artistry that is Ringo’s style; bassists will be blown away by Paul’s melodic yet rhythmic bass lines; guitarists will know the sophistication and complimentary guitar skills of John and George which are interwoven in every selection; and vocalists will understand the brilliance of their harmonies. With great material for all instruments, The Beatles show is a can’t miss opportunity for any SoR student!
Forms are open! Sign up deadline is Friday, April 24th, 2025. Students may sign up beyond the deadline, but are less likely to be placed on a top preference show.
