ROCK 101
AGES 7-10 | REHEARSALS: MONDAY, TUESDAY OR WEDNESDAY 4:15 | SATURDAY 12:45
Rock 101 is an amazing starting point for our young beginners. Our students learn to rock in one-on-one music lessons with an instructor plus participate in a weekly group where they learn scaled back versions of songs from our setlist library in a supportive and fun setting. Students build a solid foundation of skills in preparation for graduating to the Performance Program. Rock 101 students perform periodic live showcases at School of Rock. Graduating students are the opening act for the Performance Program at our end of season shows.

PERFORMANCE PROGRAM: HENDRIX'S WOODSTOCK
Ages 10-17 | rehearsals: TUESDAYS 6:00-8:00
Jimi Hendrix is one of the most influential guitarists in the history of Rock & Roll, an incredible songwriter, and innovator in the recording studio. His first album, Are You Experienced, was one of the definitive albums of the Woodstock era. In 1969, half a million people made a pilgrimage to upstate New York for three days of peace and music where artists like Hendrix, Santana, Janis Joplin, Sly & The Family Stone, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and the Grateful Dead, embodied the spirit of the 60s. It was a watershed moment for Rock and Roll. We’ll highlight Jimi Hendrix and celebrate the stylistically diverse artists who promoted unity and freedom of expression. This show is an exciting and well-balanced educational challenge for all instruments and experience levels.
PERFORMANCE PROGRAM: BEST OF THE 80s
Ages 10-17 | rehearsals: WEDNESDAYS 6:00-8:00
Travel back in time to the era of fluorescent clothes, poofy hair, and synth-driven pop anthems. The MTV phenomenon allowed artists to reach unimaginable numbers and sell millions of records. Super-star Pop acts like Madonna, Prince, and The Go- Gos dominated while wildly popular artists like Boy George of Culture Club, Chrissie Hynde of Pretenders, and every hair metal act challenged perceptions of what is acceptable attire or behavior for “male” and “female.” Rock bands like Guns N’ Roses, Journey, and Bon Jovi reaped the benefits from the decade of excess. This show will be a diverse mix of styles and artists, and is a challenging and fun experience for students of any instrument or experience level.
PERFORMANCE PROGRAM: THE CLASH
Ages 10-17 | rehearsals: THURSDAYS 6:00-8:00
The Clash’s unique sound, rebellious lyrics, and energetic live shows influenced generations of Punk rockers. Their mix of Rock, Reggae, Rockabilly, Soul, and Funk set them apart from their peers in the 1970s and '80s. We’ll cover material from their debut album The Clash to their most commercially successful release Combat Rock with all of their classic Punk anthems in between. This is one of the most fun shows in School of Rock, accessible for beginners but challenging for experienced players, especially on guitar, bass and drums.
ADULT PROGRAM: ROOTS OF ROCK & ROLL
AGES 18+ | rehearsals: tuesdays 8:00-10:00
Rock & Roll really started to develop around 1953-1954 when iconic songs like “Hound Dog” by Big Mama Thornton and “Rock Around The Clock” by Bill Haley were released. The mid-1950s were a cultural Big Bang that - through the talent and brilliance of many artists such as Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, The Ronettes, Ritchie Valens, Elvis Presley, and more - transcended social boundaries and created a music movement that youth from all walks of life could feel like they were a part of. Rock & Roll is the ultimate freedom in musical expression and changed our entire world forever, and this show explores where it all began.
ADULT PROGRAM: LEFT OF THE DIAL
AGES 18+ | rehearsals: THURSDAYS 8:00-10:00
Alternative before alternative, the underground rock featured on college radio stations in the 80s and early 90s was broadcast at lower frequencies, on the far left side of the FM radio dial. The Replacements coined the phrase and a compilation album cemented the nickname for this era of sound. Even the bands that found mainstream success began as DIY underdogs who influenced the evolution of the Grunge and Indie Rock of the 90s and 2000s. This show covers a wide variety of musical styles and unique personalities, including artists like Sonic Youth, REM, The Pixies, Depeche Mode, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, The Smiths, and Dinosaur Jr. Have a blast playing these songs that still sound innovative, even today.
