FAQ

What age can my child start at School of Rock?

At School of Rock Murphy, our youngest rockstars start their music journey with us as young as 5 in our Rookies Program.

Our Rookies Program is designed for 5 and 6 year old rockstars to provide a fun introduction to music fundamentals. Among other tools, we use proprietary setups for guitar, bass, drums and keyboard to provide a gateway to understanding music. The skills and passion for music that we teach our students will get them ready for Rock 101 and a lasting appreciation for music.

Can parents/guardians observe lessons or band rehearsals?

For safety, parents/guardians are generally not allowed in secured teaching areas (the "inner sanctum") without a staff escort, as staff members are background checked and unescorted visitors are prohibited beyond the security doors. All common areas are monitored by cameras.

How long is each session?

Each Season is 4-months long. Every season we have 2 concerts for Rock 101, Performance and Adult Band Programs. A mid-season show around the 2-month point, and a season showcase near the end of the 4-months. See our 2026 Seasonal Calendar for potential show dates and the breakdown of each season.

*Your enrollment continues from season to season until we've received your emailed Notice of Last Payment. Please see our cancellation policy.

Does my child need their own instrument, or do you provide them?

It depends on the instrument! We always recommend to wait a couple of weeks before getting your own to be sure you do not purchase something they decide is not the right fit musically.

In the school, we have drums and keyboards for use so you do not need to bring them. Vocalists should bring their own microphone that has an XLR connection. Guitarists and bassists can start by using a school instrument, but will eventually need one of their own to practice on. We are always happy to help our families find the right instrument for them!

Where do I find show schedules?

Seasonal Show Schedules will be released 2 weeks prior to show date. You can find them on the windows and desk of the school, on Google, Instagram and Facebook, also via email.

What is the policy to cancel a lesson in order to receive a makeup pass?

To receive a makeup pass, you must notify the school by 10pm the night prior to the scheduled lesson time. You can respond to the appointment reminder, or send a separate email if you are unable to call the school during business hours. Email is the quickest way to get ahold of the front office staff when it comes to schedule changes needed. Same day cancellations, even in the event of illness, will result in forfeiture of the lesson as we pay our instructors for being in the school and prepared to teach.

We do offer SoR Online as an alternative to missing a lesson!

What is the required notice period if cancelling enrollment with School of Rock?

At School of Rock Murphy, we require a Notice of Last Payment in order to cancel your program. This notice must be emailed to murphy@schoolofrock.com by the 5th of the month in order to not be charged on the 1st of the following month. (ex: cannot participate in Summer Season due to vacations? Turn in notice by May 5th to not be charged on June 1st.)
