Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher
Hailing from Colombia, Johnny is a passionate teacher teaching guitar and bass guitar at School of Rock Otay Ranch. He began playing music at just five years old and also plays keys. A graduate of Musicians Institute, Jonathan has performed with bands like Ruin the Coffin Caddies and Darkzide. He brings experience working with kids from Christian churches and other schools. His favorite artists include Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Children of Bodom, In Flames, Soilwork, Steve Vai, Satriani, and Van Halen. Currently in Flesh Cyborg, Jonathan always dreamed of working at School of Rock, where he loves teaching fellow musicians and pursuing his passion.
Adrian T
Studio Coordinator
Adrian serves as Studio Coordinator at School of Rock Otay Ranch, originally from Indianapolis, Indiana. Though not currently playing, he has a background in guitar, clarinet, and vocals from a year of guitar practice, two years of choir, and two years of clarinet. He once assisted in stage assembly for Excision at Craneway Pavilion in Northern California. With experience as a college tutor in mathematics and sciences, Adrian’s favorite band is Linkin Park. He has no current bands or projects but was drawn to School of Rock by the creativity and inspiration of its students, enjoying the excitement they show when working with instructors.
Montse C
Vocal Teacher
Montse, a San Diego native, teaches vocals at School of Rock Otay Ranch. She started singing as far back as she can remember, inspired by her elementary school best friend who introduced her to Adele, leading them to perform together in class. Her parents have always supported her natural musical talent. Largely self-taught through videos, choir, show choir, and district musicals, Montse draws from artists like Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Selena Quintanilla, Idina Menzel, and Adele. She’s been lead singer in alt-rock pop bands The 805, Twelve Blocks Apart, and Seamless, performing at venues like The Template, Humble Heart, and Che Cafe, and has starred in professional musicals with Blindspot Collective, Teatro San Diego, and Oceanside Theater Company.
This is Montse's first role teaching kids, but she dreams of becoming a performing arts teacher. Her favorite concert was Coldplay, and she’s currently in projects like The Importance of Being Earnest at Southwestern College and Karaoke Dreams with Blindspot Collective at UCSD. Friends recommended her to School of Rock years ago—her first job—where she loves sharing her passion, seeing students absorb her guidance, and supporting their journeys
CJ
Bass Guitar Teacher, Guitar Teacher, Drum Teacher
Born and raised in San Diego, California, CJ primarily teaches guitar at School of Rock Otay Ranch but also covers bass guitar and drums. He started playing at age 5, inspired by seeing Green Day live in 2004. Currently pursuing an audio engineering degree at university, CJ has been in his band Atomic 99 for nearly 10 years, with early shows at Queen Bees, House of Blues main stage, and a near-sold-out SOMA San Diego. He’s had incredible experiences with Green Day, from appearing in a music video and major motion picture to hanging out backstage. Before joining, he taught guitar to friends’ kids during the pandemic. His favorite band is Basement. Recommended for the job, CJ loves how it motivates him to inspire and help others.
Luis
Drum Teacher
Originally from San Diego, California, Luis, teaches drums at School of Rock Otay Ranch and also plays marching percussion and mallet percussion. He began playing music at age eight, and notably, he’s been part of Tijuana No! With prior experience as a percussion tech at Mount Miguel High School and bass tech at Cornerstone Percussion, Luis brings hands-on expertise to working with kids.
Kerry W
General Manager, Vocal Teacher
Originally from Kent, England, Kerry teaches vocals at School of Rock Otay Ranch and plays keyboard + piano. She started singing before she could walk, inspired by ABBA’s popularity in England—she wanted to be like Ann-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog. With ongoing vocal lessons since age eight and piano training from 14 to 16, Kerry has sung the National Anthem in arenas across the USA.
As lead and backup singer in bands since 19, her groups opened for Jefferson Airplane and Night Ranger (known for “Sister Christian”). She’s performed in San Diego venues since 1999 and competed on the TV show All Access Karaoke. Holding a BA in Elementary Education from St. Martins University, Kerry has experience as an elementary school teacher. Her favorite concert was ABBA at Wembley Stadium for her 8th birthday, with floor seats, followed by meeting Elton John backstage in Dallas, TX—she’s an avid concertgoer. Drawn to School of Rock Otay Ranch upon seeing its sign, Kerry believes music is a universal language that all living things can enjoy, noting life without it would be flat!
Vanny D
Keyboard + Piano Teacher
San Diego’s Vanny D teaches keyboard + piano at School of Rock Otay Ranch, with a bit of guitar and bass guitar experience. He started playing at 15, inspired by music from movies, TV, and video games. Currently studying music theory in college, Vanny is a student in the Young Artists in Harmony program by Art of Elan and performs gigs with Reys of the Sun. He’s volunteered at his mom’s old daycare. His favorite band is Racing Mount Pleasant, and he’s currently in bands like Reality Session, Reys of the Sun, DnA, Jack Dice, and Austin Lara. As a former School of Rock student, Vanny credits it for his growth and passion as a musician, loving the chance to teach new students from the other side and see their progress.
Vincent L
Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher, Drum Teacher
Vincent, a San Diego native, teaches drums at School of Rock Otay Ranch and also plays bass guitar and guitar. He began at five years old, inspired by Ringo Starr, Metallica, and Guitar Hero. Holding a certification in drumming from Berklee School of Music, Vincent’s favorite band is King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. He’s currently in bands like Reality Session, Atomic 99, and No Interest. Seeking to play with other musicians, Vincent found a welcoming community at School of Rock Otay Ranch as a result.
Mario A
Drum Teacher
Mario A, from San Diego, teaches drums at School of Rock Otay Ranch and also handles vocals. He started playing at 15, inspired by school friends who were at School of Rock, where he then enrolled to learn his electric drum kit. Having learned everything about drums there, Mario was a member of the Houseband, flying to Summerfest 2024 in Milwaukee to open for major artists on huge outdoor stages. He’s incredibly grateful for how School of Rock connected him to music uniquely. Mario's experience includes leading kindergarden through second grade youth group at his Christian K-12 school, where he guided activities, modeled sermon values, and became a role model for his then six-year-old nephew. Mario’s favorite concert was U2 at the Sphere in Las Vegas, which he called "mind-blowing". Currently teaching exclusively at School of Rock Otay Ranch while in school full-time, he was brought in by friends and loves how it fosters rock music learning through lessons, rehearsals, friendships, and ambitious goals.
Ricky B
Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher
Ricky, a San Diego native, teaches bass guitar, guitar, and keyboard + piano at School of Rock Otay Ranch. He began his musical journey at age 15, inspired by friends enrolled in the program who encouraged him to make use of an electric drum kit he owned but didn’t know how to play. Ricky credits School of Rock with teaching him everything he knows about drums, fuelling his passion for music. Currently, he’s active in several bands including Reality Session, Reys of the Sun, DnA, Jack Dice, and Austin Lara. His favorite band is Racing Mount Pleasant. As a former student himself, Ricky was drawn back to School of Rock to give back to the place that shaped his growth as a musician. He finds immense joy in teaching new students from the perspective of someone who once learned in their seats, fostering their own passion and development.
Bernie P
Vocal Teacher
Bernie, born and raised in San Diego, CA, specializes in teaching vocals and music theory with a strong focus on performance and music studio readiness. He started singing at age 5 and picked up his first instrument at 9, driven by a lifelong love for music and the captivating sounds of his sisters’ marching and concert bands. Bernie received professional training at the Vocal Institute of Technology (VIT) at the Musicians Institute from 2004 to 2006, honing his skills in vocal technique, music theory, ear training, and live performance.
As co-founder and lead vocalist of the alternative rock band Monday’s Alibi (2006–2013), he performed at iconic venues like House of Blues, SOMA, The Casbah, and Brick by Brick, featured on the Vans Warped Tour, and led multiple U.S. tours. He collaborated with producer Joe Marlett (Blink-182, Switchfoot) and Grammy-winning mastering engineer Gavin Lurssen (Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age), releasing albums Departure (2009) and Conclusions (2012). Bernie has extensive experience working with kids, including roles at High Tech Middle and High Tech Middle Media Arts where he supported music, academics, recreation, games, and events, as well as volunteering in youth programs at St. Charles Catholic Church focused on faith formation, service, and fellowship.
Though brass instruments were once part of his repertoire, his current projects are on hold as a dad to two young boys—though family living room rock-outs keep the music alive. His all-time favorite band is Acceptance, which influenced his vocal style, songwriting, and performance, and his top concert memory is Justin Timberlake’s unforgettable FutureSex/LoveSound Tour. Bernie loves School of Rock Otay Ranch for its collaborative, student-centered approach, allowing him to blend his expertise with a passion for empowering the next generation of performers to find their voice and command the stage.
Daniel C
Bass Guitar Teacher, Guitar Teacher, Keyboard + Piano Teacher
Daniel teaches bass, guitar, and keyboard + piano at School of Rock Otay Ranch, with additional proficiency on drums, ukulele, and harmonica. He started playing music at age 12, inspired by Metallica’s powerful sound and watching his older brother play guitar. Daniel studied music for three years at Grossmont Community College, building a strong foundation. His performance highlights include touring the East Coast and Canada, playing shows across Southern California, and performing at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena for 17,000 fans during a sold-out hockey game.
Daniel has hands-on experience teaching kids, having coached middle school track and field in Lakewood, CA, and currently leading music programs for TK-8th graders in after-school settings. Among his favorite artists are Circa Survive, Thursday, August Burns Red, John Coltrane, Pat Martino, and Mk.Gee, with standout concert experiences including Metallica at The Big 4, Mk.Gee, Eric Clapton, and Carlos Santana. Currently, Daniel is involved in the band In The Mourning. He joined School of Rock Otay Ranch to guide students toward their own musical freedom, sharing the knowledge and advice he cherished as a young music lover himself.
Jason M
Keyboard + Piano Teacher, Vocal Teacher
Jason is a keyboard + piano teacher native to San Diego, CA. Originally trained for woodwinds and theory, Jason studies Music Education at southwestern college and plans to move to San Diego State University for their rigorous music program. Starting on piano at the age of ten, Jason's career in musical excellence spans over 14 years in keyboard + piano, singing, and other instruments. His highlights include playing piano and lead alto saxophone for numerous jazz bands, including the Southwestern College Big Band. In addition to teaching at School of Rock Otay Ranch, Jason is also a woodwind coach and jazz instructor at other high schools in the area, and also teaches music programs at the elementary and middle school level.
Sam P
Music Director
Sam is in multiple bands and has been running rehearsals and guitar lessons at School of Rock Otay Ranch for over five years, serving as the House Band Director for over a year. He is super excited and grateful for the opportunity to help shape the direction of School of Rock Otay Ranch.
Santiago O
Guitar Teacher
Santiago O, from San Diego with Colombian and German roots, teaches guitar at School of Rock Otay Ranch. He is also proficient in bass guitar, drums, and even the accordion.
He started playing at 12, drawing inspiration from Led Zeppelin and his dad who would play guitar at home. Some of Santiago's favorite artists include Soda Stereo, Luis Alberto Spinetta, The Police, The Smiths, Alice in Chains, and Grupo Niche. Notably, he was School of Rock Otay Ranch’s first performance student, and was a consistent member of house band until his graduation in 2024. In 2023 and 2024, he represented School of Rock Otay Ranch at Milwaukee's Summerfest performing and reaching the finals of the annual “Shred Competition”. However, Santiago’s proudest achievement with School of Rock was being selected in 2022, 2023, and 2024 as an Allstar, giving him the opportunity to tour and perform at some of the nation’s most notable venues.
Currently, Santiago is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Mathematics-Economics and Data Science at the University of California, San Diego. He believes that School of Rock Otay Ranch helped him find his identity, and is passionate about helping the next generation of musicians find their own.
Sofia P
Vocal Teacher
Sofia is a San Diego native who is excited to share her lifelong passion for music. She fell in love with music at just four years old after being introduced to The Beatles at a family party, and she’s been hooked ever since. Over the years, Sofia has expressed that love through choir, musical theater, and open mic performances, appearing at venues such as Disney World, Good Morning San Diego, and the USS Midway.
Her musical influences include Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, Khruangbin, and Joan Baez. Most recently, Sofia served as Vocal Director for the premiere of the musical Here Comes the Sun. She feels incredibly fortunate to now translate her love of music into teaching and mentoring students at School of Rock Otay Ranch!
