Music programs at School of Rock San Jose combine one-on-one lessons with group band practices

School of Rock in San Jose, California is proud to offer music classes to help teach our community how to play instruments with skill and confidence. We teach everything from keyboard to bass guitar, songwriting, and vocals for all levels. At School of Rock, students can perform live shows and develop their musical ability in a supportive and encouraging learning environment. Iconic artists such as The Doobie Brothers, Dion Warwick, and Smash Mouth are all from San Jose. The city offers a wealth of opportunities for students to take the skills they learned at School of Rock and go on to perform at local venues such as Art Boutiki, a well known all-ages venue for local artists, and The Ritz.

Rock 101
Ages 8-13

Rock 101 is one of School of Rock San Jose's top programs for kids and beginners. Students have one weekly group rehearsal where they learn to play classic rock songs that have been simplified for beginner musicians. Additionally, Rock 101 students in San Jose have a weekly private music lesson with an instructor who helps them learn the concepts and skills behind their performance songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our music programs for kids in San Jose are designed to get students on stage performing, with the goal of building strong musical proficiency. Younger students at School of Rock San Jose who have participated in the Rookies program can move to our Rock 101 music program once they’re ready. Additionally, students (typically ages 8 to 13-years-old) can begin Rock 101 without any prior experience. The goal of this rock program is to quickly develop a basic competence on students’ chosen instruments before moving on to our famous Performance Program.

Ages 8-18

The Performance Program at School of Rock San Jose is our hallmark music program, where tens of thousands of students enroll each year. It consists of a weekly group rehearsal where kids and teens learn by playing rock music's most iconic songs with a band composed of their peers. Students are assigned songs and parts that are tailored to them based on their age, experience and ability to learn new skills and concepts. Students then work through their parts in weekly private music lessons, refining the skills and concepts that those songs introduce. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare kids and teens for live performances. Every few months, School of Rock San Jose Performance Program students take the stage and play at local San Jose music venues in front of a live audience.

School of Rock San Jose's music programs for kids and teens are designed to inspire by getting students on stage and performing. All of our other music education programs focus on readying students for our famous Performance Program. This is where students develop incredible musical skills. Performance Program students have often gone through our Rock 101 program first or have some previous basic music experience. These young musicians will have custom development plans outlined by their instructors with key concepts reinforced during private lessons and group rehearsals, all with the goal of performing live at a San Jose music venue.

Ages 3-5

At School of Rock San Jose our Little Wing music program for preschoolers and toddlers teaches students foundational music skills by playing games and participating in other interactive musical activities. Little Wing students have one weekly group music lesson in which they use classic rock songs to learn about rhythm, song structure, melody and dynamics through play.

The Little Wing music program is the first step in a young musician's journey. At School of Rock San Jose, toddlers and preschoolers who show an interest in music should start with Little Wing. As they get older, they will progress into the Rookies program, followed by Rock 101 and the Performance Program.

Rookies music program for children in San Jose
Ages 6-7

At School of Rock San Jose, our music program for children with no previous musical experience (typically ages 6 to 7-years-old) is called Rookies. Rookies students have one weekly group music lesson where they learn fundamentals like chords, rhythm and song structure. Kids get to learn and experiment with multiple instruments so they can later decide which one they ultimately want to continue pursuing in Rock 101.

All of our music programs are designed to inspire students to learn and develop a strong musical proficiency. At School of Rock San Jose, younger students who are not ready for a more comprehensive program like Rock 101 can start in Rookies. Additionally, students who have completed the Little Wing program will progress into the Rookies music program. No prior musical experience is needed for Rookies. Once your child is ready for private music lessons (typically older than first or second graders), they will graduate into our Rock 101 program.

Age 12 and over

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens teaches the fundamentals of songwriting, arrangement and music theory, and helps students compose original works.  At School of Rock San Jose, songwriting students receive one weekly private lesson where they learn concepts, technique and theory on an instrument of their choice. These principles are then applied in a weekly group lesson where students work together on songwriting exercises and lyrical workshops.  Every few months, Songwriting students take the stage to perform or band together to record their original songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens in San Jose is designed to create musical proficiency through the creation of original music. Students at School of Rock San Jose who have completed our Rock 101 program can move to our Songwriting program once they’re ready. Additionally, new students who have prior experience with and basic knowledge of an instrument can also begin Songwriting. The program culminates with a live showcase where students perform their original compositions in bands at a local music venue. Students taking the Songwriting Program online will remotely record their original songs to produce a demo of the class's music.

All Ages

At School of Rock San Jose, our students can take online, one-on-one music instruction from the comfort of their homes. We call this program School of Rock Remote. This online music program contains weekly one-on-one instruction conducted by our expert School of Rock instructors in a safe virtual lesson room.
Students will receive their training using our proprietary education program, The School of Rock Method™, which couples live video lessons with our proprietary Method App™, SongFirst Approach™ and Method Books™.

All of our music programs for kids, teens, and adults are designed to help students gain amazing musical proficiency. School of Rock’s online music lesson program is no exception. Online guitar lessons, online piano lessons, online drum lessons, online singing lessons and online bass guitar lessons are all offered through the School of Rock Remote online program.

Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock San Jose House Band music program gives students under 18 the opportunity to join a gigging band composed of fellow musicians from their school. These students perform additional live shows throughout the year. All students in the Performance Program have the opportunity to audition for a spot in School of Rock San Jose's House Band. Once selected, House Band members become leaders in their School of Rock community and perform live shows at CA rock venues throughout the year.

Performance is the core of School of Rock's educational approach. Therefore, we create additional opportunities for students to perform on stages throughout San Jose and the rest of CA. The House Band music program allows each school's most talented students the opportunity to join a band and play routinely in front of live audiences. Once a member, students will gain real music experience associated with gigging musicians and will become leaders and mentors inside the School of Rock community.

The AllStars national tour features the best child and teen musicians
Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock AllStars Tour takes the very best students from around the world and sends them on a nationwide summer tour across the United States. Less than 1% of School of Rock students are selected each year to represent School of Rock as an AllStar. All Performance Program students are eligible to audition for this prestigious program. The intensive audition process starts off with video submissions followed by live auditions. Once selected, AllStar students will have an authentic touring experience including traveling on a tour bus, doing tour publicity and starring in nightly performances at famous venues and festivals during a two-week tour.

Becoming an AllStar is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. They play on legendary stages large and small, including The Knitting Factory, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Troubadour and Lollapalooza. AllStar students often go on to have accomplished careers in the music industry. Former AllStars have gone on to become touring artists, star in Broadway musicals, get signed to record deals, become finalists on talent competitions like "The Voice" and "American Idol" and have other notable roles in the music industry.

At School of Rock we teach differently than other music schools in San Jose. Our curriculum is performance-based, meaning that we prepare students to perform. Our piano lessons for beginners combine weekly private instruction with weekly band rehearsals. At School of Rock San Jose, our beginner keyboard lessons for kids take key concepts and music fundamentals—finger placement, scales, key differentiation and more—and teach them through popular rock songs. Alex Nguyen Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher, Drums Teacher

Alex is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and performer from San Jose,CA. He was introduced to music at an early age and has thus found his passion in life. In high school, Alex was part of the symphonic, concert, marching and steel drum ensembles, where he learned the importance of being a well-rounded musician as well as playing with others. With these programs, he had the opportunity to play in various venues such as Disneyland and all the way across the world at the Sydney Opera House in Australia. He attended the University of Oregon, where he studied Music, as well as branched off and played original music in bands. In the Bay Area, Alex plays in Love District, Socorra and other projects.

He does his best to share his passion and enthusiasm for music with all of his students. Since joining School of Rock, he finds joy in inspiring his students to play and helping them to find their own voice in music. You will never find him happier than when he is playing or teaching.

Alex Pipkins Guitar Teacher, Piano Teacher, Vocal Instructor

Alex Pipkins is a teacher and singer/songwriter from Austin, Texas. He's benefited from almost two decades of musical training, including studying Music Education at the University of Texas at Arlington. Alex is a multi-instrumentalist who's performed in several punk rock and ska bands, as well as jazz ensembles and orchestras. He has taught guitar, keyboard, bass and vocal lessons to a wide range of ages. Alex finds nothing in life more fun than playing and talking about music, and is beyond excited to be teaching at School of Rock.

Brian Hart Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher

Brian currently serves as a guitar and bass instructor at School of Rock San Jose, where you can trust his commitment to providing students with lessons learned from his vast experience.

Nick Maghoul Guitar Teacher

A former School of Rock San Mateo instructor, Nick Maghoul, who goes by Ace, started playing guitar in 1991 at the age of 11. He has been in numerous bands and writes his own original songs. Ace is very passionate about teaching and has taught in multiple different locations and schools across the Bay Area. His goal is to make learning a more enjoyable experience by encouraging students to mix theory with learning their favorite songs. He covers the following topics: intervals, major and minor scales, harmonic and melodic scales, pentatonic scales, building chords, determining key centers, modes, modal interchange, effects, pentatonic substitution and more. He is a guitar teacher at School of Rock San Jose.

Robert Xavier Bass Guitar Teacher

Robert Xavier has been playing bass for 16 years now and guitar for the latter part. He loves all types of music, but specializes in R&B, funk and contemporary music. He spent the earlier part of his musical career as a studio musician in Los Angeles playing bass and guitar. He has gotten to work with some amazing producers and songwriters throughout his career. He has eight years of audio production experience tied in with four years of audio engineering. He looks forward to learning more and developing with all the students he teaches here at School of Rock San Jose as a bass guitar teacher and Rock 101 teacher.
Studio Coordinator Amanda Cullen

Amanda Cullen Studio Coordinator

Amanda is a Studio Coordinator at School of Rock San Jose and has been with the school since 2020. She has taught musical theatre since 2017, and loves helping young artists become the confident performers they want to be. She has a Bachelor’s degree in interior design and a minor in theatre arts from San Jose State, as well as an Associate's degree in human development studies. She’s currently learning how to play guitar slowly but surely, and her favorite artist to listen to is Hozier. She’s usually the one answering the office phone, so give us a call and say hi!

Brian Souvignier Music Director

Brian Souvignier grew up here in San Jose and began his musical journey as a Jazz trumpet player before making the switch to drums 16 years ago. He studied with several legendary Bay Area drummers before making the move to Nashville, Tennessee and more recently Los Angeles, where he has been involved in a wide variety of musical projects. He has also spent years as a private instructor and continues to pursue his own development as a player. Brian has toured with worship teams, singer-songwriters, Heavy Metal bands and Country singers, and believes in teaching a wide range of musical styles. Brian is passionate about continuing to teach and inspire, and is excited to return to the Bay Area as part of the School of Rock family.

Chris Lee Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher

Chris Lee is currently a guitar and bass teacher at School Of Rock. He is a very well-trained and experienced guitar/bass teacher, as well as a professional performer. Chris attended and received his degree at the Guitar Institute of Technology, in Hollywood, CA. He teaches a wide variety of music styles including Rock, Metal, Jazz, Blues, Folk, Fingerpicking, etc., from beginning to advanced student levels. He teaches his students to learn harmony and theory, ear-training, as well as technique/chops. His ultimate goal for his students is to make their learning experience fun & enjoyable by teaching them what they need to know, as well as anything they'd like to play!
Singing Teacher

Kira Hooks Singing Teacher Kira Hooks

Kira Hooks is a Soul/Pop based singer/songwriter and vocal coach. She was born in Houston, TX and spent her childhood living in The Netherlands, Nigeria, Scotland, and China. In the last 10 years, she studied vocals at the LA College of Music, toured the US performing her original songs and being a side musician, lived in Nashville, and New York, and now resides in Redwood City. Kira has taught at School of Rock since September 2019, getting her start at School of Rock Queens (NY), and is now continuing her journey at School of Rock San Jose in December 2020. She loves helping her students see the value in their unique voice and offers a safe space to explore range, technique, musicianship, and the craft of songwriting. Kira has a cinematic approach to writing music without shying away from using themes from multiple genres. What ties it all together is her voice, which has a sonorous low end and a classic, nostalgic feel. Kira has collaborated with and studied under well respected musicians, such as Dorian Holley (Michael Jackson), John Avila (Oingo Boingo), Kacee Clanton (Joe Cocker), Desmond Child (Steven Tyler), Sara Leib (Voxercise/Jazz Artist), Dara Tucker (Artist/Keb’Mo) and Ernie Halter (artist). Her most recent album, 'Love AtLas(t)' was released in May 2020, and is available on all streaming platforms.

Alex Driggers Singing Teacher

Alex Driggers is a long time Bay Area performer. Alex went to Milpitas High School where his interest in singing started. Alex has been singing a capella music, specifically Barbershop Harmony for the past 8 years of his life. He’s done many musical theatre productions, most recently “Cabaret” with City Lights Theatre Company. You might also have caught him performing at California’s Great America as an actor on the 4D Mass Effect ride, as Jack Frost, or most recently South Bay Shores radio cohost, Sonny Burns. His passion for singing is equally matched by his passion to teach singing. Alex thinks if everyone sang the world would truly be a better place.

Shand Walton Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher

Shand Walton is a singer, songwriter, and guitar player from Texas. He writes songs with a classic Rock vibe and great hooks that are both familiar and original. He has performed live throughout the South West and along the West Coast, as well as touring Europe on many occasions. When not playing guitar he enjoys walking his dog, Lola.
Drum Teacher Chris Ortega

Chris Ortega Drum Teacher

Chris Ortega is a professional drummer, drum teacher, drumline instructor, studio drummer, percussionist and Jazz band instructor. A local drummer from Sunnyvale, CA, he has displayed his talents in multiple bands and music genres over the past five decades. Accolades include touring Canada, a recipient of the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award, nominated as Drummer of the Year for Bay Area's 1st Annual Blues Awards. As a teacher, for several decades he continues to inspire his students to express their musical creativity and talents engaging in high school programs, private lessons, playing in bands and most importantly, practicing. Chris is a regionally endorsed artist for Yamaha Drums in Northern California. His passions include working the Jazz Festivals, enjoying the music, equipment, technology and the fans.

Josiah Lakoduk Studio Coordinator

Josiah is a San Jose local and has lived here for most of his life. He graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in business administration. Josiah has been part of School of Rock since 2019 helping the team out as one of the studio coordinators. His passions include music, roasting coffee, gaming and, while he won’t admit it, he thinks Nickleback is a pretty good band.

Carlos Solorzano Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher, Keyboard Teacher

Carlos is a guitar, bass, and piano teacher at School of Rock, and has taught multiple summer camps at the school since summer of 2021. He’s been playing music for over a decade and he enjoys playing and teaching a variety of styles of music. In his free time he enjoys collecting CDs and vinyl records. Music is a passion of his and he finds it very rewarding to have beginner students who eventually excel as musicians.
Drum Teacher, Keyboard Teacher Ben Palmon

Ben Palmon Drum Teacher, Keyboard Teacher

Ben is a Bay Area-raised performer, and arranger from Fremont. He was introduced to piano at a young age, and classical music was his gateway to further musical ventures. After a decade in the Certificate of Music program in the East Bay, he moved on to discover percussion. From there he branched out into rudimental percussion, writing a show for his high school in 2011 and marching for the Blue Devils B Corps as a quad drummer in 2012.

This experience coupled with his time studying percussion performance at San Jose State University under Galen Lemmon helped fuel his passion for teaching and performing. He has been performing for the Niner Noise Drumline since 2013.

Since 2011, Ben has taught drumline in multiple high schools across the Bay Area, while continuing to teach piano and drum kit via private lessons.
General Manager

Chris Pounders General Manager

Chris Pounders was a part of the team that opened School of Rock here in San Jose. Chris started out as a teacher teaching drums and helped direct the school's first show. Eventually Chris became the Music Director, and is now General Manager. He is deeply connected to the San Jose music scene, and continues to release music and perform live. Chris was a performer in the international sensation "Stomp," and has also toured around the United States and in Canada with the Vans Warped Tour. Past television experiences include "The X-Factor," "America's Got Talent" and "Conan O'Brien", and he acted in many various music videos for other artists like Taylor Swift, Neon Trees, Ozzy and Mariah Carey. Chris is excited to inspire students, teachers and keep the creative music community growing.

Marissa Muraoka Guitar Teacher, Keyboard Teacher, Singing Teacher

Marissa Muraoka is a performer and singer/songwriter. She began singing and performing at a young age, learned to play piano, and eventually found her way to guitar. Growing up she participated in musicals at school, and began writing her own music and performing with her guitar. While going to school in Santa Barbara she studied music at the Santa Barbara City College and then moved on to UCSB to graduate with a B.A. in English.

After returning to the Bay Area after college, she released an EP and has continued to write her own music and perform. Her teaching career began in 2018 and she has enjoyed sharing her love of music with others, whether it be through teaching or performing. She is excited to be a part of the School of Rock team, and hopes to encourage and challenge her students to be their best and reach their full potential.

Evan Frangesh Drum Teacher

Evan Frangesh is an experienced percussionist and drummer from San Jose, as well as an Alumni of Chapman University (Music Performance-Percussion '20), San Jose Youth Symphony, and local Westmont High's music department. As a classically-trained percussionist with many contemporary influences, his experience as an all-around player ranges from Rock/Pop/Blues/Modern and world genres on Drumset and Percussion, to Concert & Orchestral music ranging from 20th-21st century Contemporary & Avant-Garde all the way back to 15th-17th century Baroque/Early Music performance. Having studied percussion for over 13 years in different ensembles and environments, he can share his knowledge with students of all ages!
