In the Best of the '80s show, School of Rock will travel back in time to an era of fluorescent clothes, poofy hair, and the best synth-driven pop anthems you will ever hear. On August 1, 1981, music fans were catapulted into the '80s music era by the debut of a cultural phenomenon: MTV. This new music format - the music video - gave old and new artists alike the chance to reach unimaginable numbers of diverse audiences and sell millions of records and cassette tapes. The '80s would not have had its soundtrack without Michael Jackson. Jackson began the '80s on a sonic high that carried over from 1979’s “Off the Wall”, but he struck gold with the worldwide phenomenon that was Thriller. Also making a huge impact on the '80s were super-star Pop acts like Madonna, Prince, and all-girl band The Bangles. Synth-driven music became massively popular, with artists like Eurythmics, Flock of Seagulls, and The Cars becoming stars. Although Pop acts reigned supreme in the '80s, Rock bands like Guns N’ Roses, Journey, Bon Jovi, and Living Colour reaped the benefits of the ‘decade of excess’. The Best of the '80s show will feature a diverse mix of styles and artists, and is a challenging and fun experience for students of any instrument or experience level.
Garage Rock refers to raw and powerful Rock & Roll that prioritizes emotion and energy over sophistication or technical ability. The '60s Garage Bands were in many ways the precursors to the Punk movement. Their songs tended to be short and repetitive, with simple forms and arrangements. Perhaps the two most recognizable Garage Rock anthems are “Louie Louie” and “Wild Thing”. “Louie Louie” is one of the most recorded songs in Rock history. The Kingsmen’s version is the best known and actually has a prominent mistake that was left in the master recording. While the Garage band phenomenon peaked in the '60s, the concept has never really gone away. Stripped down bands such as the Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, White Stripes, Hives and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard carried the Garage Rock tradition into the 21st century.. Much like Punk Rock, Garage Rock is a broad genre with many sub-genres and different movements and eras. Garage Rock teaches fundamental musical concepts and makes for a fantastic and fun show theme geared towards beginners and more advanced players alike.
Drums and percussion have been around for as long as recorded history, but in the past hundred years, and with the creation of the drum kit, the instrument has reached new groundbreaking heights. The drums are the foundation on what the rest of the band can build upon. From a Blues Shuffle to modern-day “Trap” Hi-Hats, the drum is an ever-changing and evolving instrument that lays the foundation for the music that we all love and cherish. Some of the drum legends who will be showcased in the Drumageddon Show are Neil Peart (Rush), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Ginger Baker (Cream), Danny Carey (Tool). Artists who incorporated multiple drummers or large percussion sections, such as The Allman Brothers Band, Santana, and The Grateful Dead, will also be featured in this show. Through this wide and diverse setlist, students will see the evolution of drumming throughout the years, and how the great innovators of the instrument continued to influence rock music’s history. This is an extremely important educational opportunity for drum students as well as all other instrumentalists to pay homage to the greatest drummers of the modern era.Drums and percussion have been around for as long as recorded history, but in the past hundred years, and with the creation of the drum kit, the instrument has reached new groundbreaking heights.
