Now enrolling Summer Shows!

We're turning up the heat this summer with an all-new lineup of seasonal shows! At School of Rock Syosset/Oyster Bay, we don't teach music to put on shows - we put on shows to teach music. Students are assigned songs selected to develop them as musicians, and work on them in private lessons with their instructors, as well as in weekly rehearsals with groups made up of their peers. The season culminates with a performance at our seasonal showcase, where they can show you everything they've been working on throughout the season!

See the end of this article for important dates, and ways to sign up for the new season!

ROCK 101: IPOD SHUFFLE

AGES 7-10 | REHEARSES TUESDAYS, 5:30P-7P

From the classics to today, Rock 101 covers it all!  This show, perfect for students ages 7-10, will cover the entire rock and roll spectrum.

ROCK 102: 90'S ROCK

AGES 10-13 | REHEARSES THURSDAYS 4:30P-6:30P OR THURSDAYS, 6:30P-8:30P

The ‘90s Rock show is arguably one of the most popular School of Rock shows in our collection.  Packed with a plethora of what are now known as ‘classic rock’ songs, the stylistic spectrum of this show is wide enough to excite any student rocker!  Hard Rock, Singer/Songwriter, Alternative and Indie encompass this decade of music that many parents grew up on! While some connect the era of ‘90s Rock to the Seattle-area Grunge scene with bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam, this show expands to also feature acts like Weezer, Hole, No Doubt, Alanis Morissette, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Green Day. The ‘90s Rock show will stretch any students’ musical progress while delighting and creating nostalgia for their parents!

ROCK 103: INDIE ROCK

AGES 13-HS SENIOR | REHEARSES TUESDAYS, 7:15P-9:15P

Indie Rock emerged as a genre in the 1980s as a response to the highly polished music of the '70s and '80s. The origin of the Indie movement can be traced back to the year of 1977 when the Buzzcocks self-published their Spiral Scratch EP. The band’s rejection of the typically major label-generated approach to the recording and distribution of music earned them their independent, or “indie”, status. As other bands adopted the Buzzcocks’ DIY ethos, the movement grew, and Indie Rock came to describe a particular sound that came from small post-punk labels of the early 1980s. In the '80s, bands like REM, The Pixies, and The Meat Puppets were known for putting musical experimentation before commercial goals, and gained popularity through college radio. In contrast with the synth-heavy pop music of the day, those Indie bands continued the emphasis on guitar that earlier Rock and Punk music popularized. In the '90s, the influence of Grunge helped usher in an era of commercialization in the Alternative genre. After many influential Indie acts achieved great commercial success, “Indie” soon began to describe artists who clung to their independent status and refused to sell-out. The music industry began to market any music that embraced a retro, guitar-centric sound as “Indie” as well. Through the 2000s, groups like the White Stripes, Jet, and The Strokes released garage-twinged music that received a massive amount of radioplay. The Indie Rock Show will give guitar players a look into unconventional chord voicings and manipulating guitar sounds with effects.  Keyboardists, too, will enjoy applying more sound patches into the songs’ soundscapes.  The rhythm section of bassists and drummers will be challenged by the diversity of playing styles of which Indie Rock is known for. This fun and musically varied show is a great choice for all experience levels.

ROCK 103: POP PUNK & EMO

AGES 13-HS SENIOR | REHEARSES WEDNESDAYS, 5:15P-7:15P

In the 1990s, artists such as Green Day, Offspring, and Blink-182 achieved success by blending punk attitudes and influences with a more polished, melodic, commercially appealing sound than their often raw predecessors. By the 2000s, Pop Punk and its Emo offshoot (featuring lyrics that touch on emotional and confessional topics) were fully entrenched in the mainstream music world, with bands such as Fall Out Boy, Paramore, My Chemical Romance, and Panic! At the Disco topping the charts and selling out arenas. Of course, this music is still incredibly popular and influential today. A fun show that can be musically challenging but also teaches solid fundamental skills, Pop Punk & Emo is sure to appeal to all levels of students and will entertain any crowd!

GRAD SCHOOL: JOAN JETT & PAT BENATAR

AGES 18+ | REHEARSES MONDAYS, 7:30P-9:30P AT SCHOOL OF ROCK SYOSSET/OYSTER BAY

Joan Jett and Pat Benatar - these iconic rockers both rose to prominence in the late 1970s, and became international superstars in the early 1980s. Their styles are different but complement each other well - both are grounded in classic guitar rock. However, Joan Jett embraces more of a punk aesthetic while Pat Benatar employs a more Hard Rock edge. Joan Jett’s initial entry into the music scene was as a guitarist for the all-girl group The Runaways. Flanked by fellow guitarist Lita Ford, The Runaways created a following in the mid '70s as a Hard Rock/Punk band. Jett decided to branch off on her own to form Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. In 1981, The Blackhearts released the mega-hit “I Love Rock and Roll” and cemented their place in '80s rock culture. Pat Benatar's first major LP In The Heat Of The Night was released in 1979, and includes her breakthrough single “Heartbreaker” which reached the Billboard Top 25 in the US. Benatar continued to produce chart-topping hits in the '80s and inspired many female-fronted bands to become prominent in the music industry. This is a great  show for up-and-coming players, but there are definitely challenges for advanced students here, particularly with some of Pat Benatar’s tricky song arrangements.

grad school: hair metal

ages 18+ | rehearses wednesdays, 7:15p-9:15p at school of rock syosset/oyster bay

The Hair Metal show is one of the most fun shows in the SoR repertoire, and can be very challenging as well. Hair Metal took over radio and MTV in the 1980s, as bands like Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Van Halen and Quiet Riot combined great songwriting, acrobatic shred guitar, and sugary vocal harmonies with flashy outfits and tons of hairspray, capturing the hearts of America’s teenagers. As the 1980s began, a fusion of several musical styles began to occur. The Glam Rock sound and imagery of the '70s began to combine with Metal and Punk to create a “glittery” Heavy Metal: Hair Metal. As the decade moved forward, the first wave of L.A. bands began to get signed and work their way up the charts. This included acts such as Quiet Riot with Metal Health, Dokken with Breaking the Chains, and Ratt with Out of the Cellar. While each had their own distinct sound, what they shared in common was an image of leather and chains, and an aggressive musical style that emphasized great hooks and loud guitars. Students will have a chance to play selections by Motley Crue, Poison, Guns n Roses, Ozzy, Van Halen, Skid Row, Quiet Riot, Lita Ford, Def Leppard, Ratt, Warrant, Bon Jovi, Dokken, Whitesnake and the like!
