Classic Metal
Classic Metal

Classic Metal is widely regarded as ranging from the late 1960s Proto-Metal sound of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin up until the mid 1980s, when Thrash Metal reigned supreme with bands like the ‘big four’ (Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth and Slayer) and Hair Metal was still a blip on the horizon. Full of guitar wizardry and riffs galore, Classic Metal’s explosion in the 1970s and early '80s would set the tone for generations of Metal bands to come and leave an indelible impression on the music industry. This show will trace the roots of metal, from the pioneer bands like Black Sabbath and Rainbow to metal’s big break in the '80s with bands like Metallica and Megadeth. If you’re looking to sharpen your shredding skills on guitar and bass, speed up your chops on the drums, or hone your high range vocals - the Classic Metal show is for you!

Best of the 80s
Best of the 80s

In the Best of the '80s show, School of Rock will travel back in time to an era of fluorescent clothes, poofy hair, and the best synth-driven pop anthems you will ever hear. On August 1, 1981, music fans were catapulted into the '80s music era by the debut of a cultural phenomenon: MTV. This new music format - the music video - gave old and new artists alike the chance to reach unimaginable numbers of diverse audiences and sell millions of records and cassette tapes. The '80s would not have had its soundtrack without Michael Jackson. Jackson began the '80s on a sonic high that carried over from 1979’s “Off the Wall”, but he struck gold with the worldwide phenomenon that was Thriller. Also making a huge impact on the '80s were super-star Pop acts like Madonna, Prince, and all-girl band The Bangles. Synth-driven music became massively popular, with artists like Eurythmics, Flock of Seagulls, and The Cars becoming stars. Although Pop acts reigned supreme in the '80s, Rock bands like Guns N’ Roses, Journey, Bon Jovi, and Living Colour reaped the benefits of the ‘decade of excess’. The Best of the '80s show will feature a diverse mix of styles and artists, and is a challenging and fun experience for students of any instrument or experience level.

Pop Legends
Pop Legends

Before there was Rock and Roll, there was Pop. Short for Popular, Pop music was whatever was popular at that moment. The Pop Legends show will celebrate the impact that acclaimed artists have made on the music industry. It will encompass a vast timeline of Pop Music ranging from the 60s through today, including artists such as Carol King, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Madonna, Taylor Swift, Stevie Nicks, Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Adele and many more. This show is a great challenge for “Rock” guitar players who want to work on new chord shapes and voicings. Bass players will be able to work on very challenging melodic parts in support of drummers who will learn limb independence on many of the parts. Vocalists’ skills will be pushed with the level of singing and performing required in this show, while keyboardists will be heavily represented in these well-known arrangements.

Radiohead
Radiohead

Radiohead has emerged in the 21st century as torchbearers of the progressive rock tradition, and have threaded the needle between innovation and popularity as well as anyone. Formed in 1985 in the UK under the name On A Friday, with members Thom Yorke (vocals), Johnny Greenwood (Guitar/multi-instrumentalist), Colin Greenwood (Bass), Ed O’Brien (Guitar/Vocals), and Philip Selway (Drums), they eventually changed their name to Radiohead upon the request of their record label, EMI. After two albums that found some success in the alternative scene thanks to the slacker anthem “Creep”, Radiohead released what would become their landmark album, OK Computer. This masterpiece cemented them as true artists and gained them worldwide success. With their constant instrumental experimentation, culturally relevant lyrics and themes, and blend of styles and genres, Radiohead are heralded as one of the most important and critically acclaimed rock acts of the modern era. The Radiohead show is an ambitious challenge for all student levels, but can be one of the most rewarding and educational shows offered by School of Rock.

David Bowie
David Bowie

David Bowie was born David Robert Jones in Brixton, South London, in 1947. In the mid '60s, Bowie played with a string of R&B-based outfits in London with little success and he considered leaving the music business to become a mime. On July 11th, 1969, Bowie released his first single in 2 years, “Space Oddity”. Following the success of “Space Oddity”, Bowie assembled the group that would help shoot him to stardom. Initially called ‘Hype’, bassist Tony Visconti, guitarist Mick Ronson, and drummer Woody Woodmansey joined Bowie for the recording of The Man Who Sold The World (1970) and agreed to become his backing band. By 1972, Glam Rock had become the dominant sub genre in the UK rock scene, led by Marc Bolan and T. Rex. With outrageous costumes and dyed red hair, Bowie debuted his new persona, Ziggy Stardust, in wild concerts that preceded the release of his fifth album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Following the release of Ziggy Stardust, Bowie reinvented himself with every subsequent album - Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans and Station To Station. As the '80s began, Bowie saw equal success from his releases - mainly from teaming up with Queen to record “Under Pressure.” The '90s saw Bowie delve deeper into electronic music embracing the Industrial genre on albums like 1.0utside, (1995) Earthling (1997) and Hours (1999). In 1996, Bowie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. David Bowie influenced generations of rockers with his theatrical style, constant reinvention, and sonic exploration. With over 100 Million albums sold worldwide, he remains one of the most successful and popular stars in music history.David Bowie was born David Robert Jones in Brixton, South London, in 1947.
