Blues Legends
Blues Legends (SoR Feature Show!)

School of rock summer featured show

The Blues is a genre that transcends time and cultural boundaries, and has influenced, in some capacity, nearly every song that has come since its original inception. This show is a crash course in the great blues players over the years and within its setlist, it shows how the torch was passed throughout the years. From the original blues pioneers to the '80s blues revival and beyond, this show is not only a great lesson in instrument improvisation, but also why the blues will never fade away! Traditional artists like Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Koko Taylor, and Albert King will be showcased, along with more contemporary blues masters like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page, and Gary Clark Jr. Throughout the many changes in blues music over the years, it still remains the most influential genre from which all modern rock is derived. One of the greatest aspects of the genre is the way it remembers its creators, innovators, and pioneers. It truly is music that will continue to stand the test of time as we celebrate those that we call “Blues Legends”.

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Red Hot Chili Peppers

Formed in Los Angeles in 1983, the Red Hot Chili Peppers revolutionized alternative rock by fusing high-energy punk with heavy funk grooves, evolving through early hardships and lineup changes that included Hillel Slovak, Dave Navarro and Jack Irons, into a globally iconic band anchored by Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith, and John Frusciante. Their expansive catalog serves as an absolute masterclass in dynamic interplay and genre-blending. This show offers invaluable technical lessons: bassists learn intricate slap techniques and melodic rhythms from Flea, guitarists explore Frusciante’s brilliant use of minimalist phrasing and emotive chord voicings, and drummers study Smith’s rock-solid pocket and sophisticated ghost notes. Rhythm and groove are paramount in studying their music and this show is sure to be a fun challenge for all students this summer!

Green Day vs Weezer
Green Day vs Weezer

Emerging from the 1990s alternative rock explosion, Green Day and Weezer offer contrasting yet complementary masterclasses in modern rock music. Originating in California's East Bay punk scene, Green Day popularized high-octane pop-punk through aggressive power chords, driving basslines, power drumming and rebellious anthems. Green Day's music teaches crucial lessons in rhythmic stamina, tight down-picking, and raw performance energy. Conversely, Los Angeles-bred Weezer pioneered "Geek Rock," blending heavy, distorted guitars with idiosyncratic, introspective lyrics and undeniable power-pop melodies. While both bands share a foundational love for incredibly catchy hooks and heavy guitar tones, Weezer challenges students with complex vocal harmonies, dynamic loud-to-quiet shifts, and melodic, classic-metal-inspired guitar solos. By studying these two legendary groups side-by-side, you will learn how to channel entirely different emotional spectrums—from aggressive angst to quirky vulnerability—while mastering the essential mechanics of pop-rock songwriting and tight band dynamics.

SoCal Summer
SoCal Summer

As the weather warms up and summer approaches, our "SoCal Summer" theme celebrates the iconic artists who shaped the legendary Los Angeles sound—from the acoustic echoes of Laurel Canyon and the electric energy of the Sunset Strip to the breezy rhythms of the coast. Featuring native legends like The Doors alongside definitive transplants like Tom Petty, this program captures the quintessential California vibe while offering tremendous educational value for young musicians. Studying this golden era of rock provides an exceptional masterclass in classic songcraft, dynamic arrangement, and collaborative listening. Students will tackle the intricate vocal harmonies and acoustic-electric blending characteristic of the SoCal scene, while learning vital lessons in unique time signatures, groove, and improvisation from challenging songs of the era. By mastering tasteful guitar phrasing, nuanced rhythmic pockets, and sophisticated lyricism, students will learn how to truly serve the song while celebrating the timeless, sun-drenched spirit of our own musical backyard.
