Owner Marc Gurley

Marc Gurley Owner

Marc's musical journey began at age 11 when he agreed to play drums with a band performing Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" live in front of his entire school. The only problem was he had never even held drumsticks in his hands! He pulled it off on sheer will and was hooked for life. From there he went on to play drums, keys and sing lead vocals with multiple rock bands. His career includes time as the frontman for the original line-up of alternative rock band Dust for Life. With DFL he recorded an album at Powerhouse Studios which went on to gain top rotation on rock radio, and he and DFL performed and shared the bill on a regular basis with powerhouse acts such as Saliva, King's X and Drivin N' Cryin to name a few. Marc is a graduate of Memphis University School and went on to earn a BA in Business Management from Southern Methodist University. He owned and operated a successful multi-unit golf retail business. However, the passion for music never faded, and School of Rock popped up on Marc's radar once he began to explore selling the golf business. As a father of three, Marc immediately understood the mission of School of Rock. In 2012 he joined the School of Rock family and he was lucky enough to do it in the birthplace of rock n' roll, Memphis. Then in 2018, he purchased the other local school, School of Rock Germantown.

Singing Teacher Mandy Lemons

Mandy Lemons Singing Teacher

Mandy Lemons, winner of the 2015 Emissaries of Memphis Music People's Choice Award, is the critically acclaimed vocalist of the band Low Society. Their music is on rotation on radio stations across the globe, including Sirius XM Bluesville. Mandy's been touring the USA and Europe since 2010, appearing everywhere from juke joints to nightclubs to major festivals.

Originally from Houston, Texas, Mandy and her husband Sturgis Nikides (guitarist/composer/producer) moved to Memphis from NYC in 2012. They immediately landed on Beale Street where they were taken under the wing and mentorship of the dearly beloved Memphis legend Dr. Herman Green (RIP). Within 2 years, they were working on their highly acclaimed 2nd album "You Can't Keep A Good Woman Down" at American Recording in Memphis. Their 3rd album, “Sanctified”, and upcoming 4th album are both trans-Atlantic productions, recorded with their Belgian-based rhythm section.

At a very young age, Mandy knew that she was born to sing. She took opera vocal lessons at the age of 14 at the Houston Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Thomas Moore who taught her about power and projection. Later in life, she continued to hone her skills at the Manhattan Singers Forum taking jazz vocals, and most recently trained under acclaimed NYC instructor Katie Agresta studying blues/rock vocal technique. Mandy has been searching for a way to give back to the Memphis community that has given her so much, and the School Of Rock has provided that in an extremely fulfilling way. She remembers what it was like to have such big dreams at a tender age, and wants to share her experience and passion for singing and stage-craft with the next generation.
Drum Teacher Stephon Lewis

Stephon Lewis Drum Teacher

Born and raised in Munford, TN, Stephon has been involved with music for more than 20 years. From the age of 3, he went to church every Sunday and built an unbreakable bond with the drums. After playing on his own, he soon transitioned into joining the school band at Munford Middle School. He continued to impress during his time in the Munford High School marching band and jazz group.

In 2014, he had the stellar opportunity to become part of the Memphis Grizzline and is still an active member. During 2015 and 2016, he drummed with the Mighty Sound of the South marching band at the University of Memphis. Also, during his college years, he earned the chance to be a part of Gateway Indoor Percussion -- a World Class percussion ensemble based out of St. Louis, MO.

While the journey as an entertainer brought him peace, he searched for more. He wanted to impact students' lives musically the way drums had for him. His career as an instructor started in 2017 at Brighton High School and didn't stop there. He simultaneously instructed at his alma mater, Munford High School. He assisted for three years and is blessed to continue with those opportunities.

While trialing the life of a musician, Stephon is still found freelance drumming in the surrounding Memphis area. He hopes to produce exquisite art for crowds to consume and continue to feed into students' minds as an active staff member at School of Rock. This has been a personal goal of his since his childhood. While he may relentlessly share his knowledge, he is mindful that it does not stop here. He must keep going and strive for excellence.
