Led Zeppelin
Mondays 6:00-8:00pm
Led Zeppelin has been synonymous with being the innovators of the Hard Rock genre. Formed originally as a new version of the British Invasion group The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin quickly took shape to become the most popular rock band in the world, filling arenas and selling millions of albums. The mastermind behind it all was Jimmy Page. As a studio musician, producer, and songwriter, Page recruited Robert Plant (vocals), John Paul Jones (bass), and John Bonham (drums) who deserves special attention for being one of the greatest and most influential drummers in Rock ‘N Roll history. Together they began a decade-long journey of prolific songwriting. Songs like “Stairway to Heaven”, “Black Dog”, “Good Times Bad Times”, and “The Ocean” have become rock standards and rights of passage for aspiring musicians. Led Zeppelin’s blend of Hard Rock, Blues, and Folk has remained the primary inspiration for many of today’s rock bands. Any student participating in this show is sure to gain a wealth of musical knowledge and advancement. The Led Zeppelin show has challenges for every skill level - it will turn beginners into intermediates and will transform intermediate players into advanced rockers!
Neo Soul
Tuesdays 6:00-8:00pm
One of the coolest shows in the SoR curriculum! Neo Soul refers to the revival of Soul and R&B music in the 90s and 2000s, led by artists such as Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, TLC, Erykah Badu, and D’Angelo. Combining elements and grooves from R&B, Jazz, Pop, Funk, and Hip Hop influences, Neo Soul distinguished itself from other Pop music of the time by focusing on a return to live instrumentation. As the genre gained in popularity, artists such as Alicia Keys, Amy Winehouse, and Mary J Blige became pop superstars. Neo-Soul remains incredibly popular today, with Bruno Mars, John Legend, Hiatus Kaiyote, and Silk Sonic carrying the torch. Neo Soul is a super educational show focusing on subtle musical elements including dynamics, melodic contours, and thoughtful percussion arrangements that will turn students into sophisticated groove monsters! It is a show that will teach important musical skills and elements to beginner, intermediate, and advanced players.
Classic Metal
Wednesdays 5:00-7:00pm
Classic Metal is widely regarded as ranging from the late 1960s Proto-Metal sound of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin up until the mid 1980s, when Thrash Metal reigned supreme with bands like the ‘big four’ (Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth and Slayer) and Hair Metal was still a blip on the horizon. Did you know that metal is highly influenced by classical music? Especially by the virtuosity requirements of composers like Bach, Vivaldi, and others from the Baroque period (1600-1750). In this program you will encounter lots of guitar wizardry and riffs galore. Classic Metal’s explosion in the 1970s and early '80s would set the tone for a generation of Metal bands to come and leave an indelible impression on the music industry. This show will trace the roots of metal, from the late '70s hard rock, Ronnie James Dio fronted bands like Black Sabbath and Rainbow and to metal’s big break in the '80s with bands like Metallica and Megadeth. If you’re looking to sharpen your shredding skills on guitar and bass, speed up your chops on the drums, or hone your high range vocals - the Classic Metal show is for you!
Songwriting
Thursdays 4:30-6:30pm
Creating original songs can be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences for musicians. School of Rock’s Songwriting Program teaches the fundamentals of songwriting and arranging, as students compose original works. Here you will learn about the main elements of music such as rhythm, melody, harmony, song structure, lyrics, and many other important theory related topics that will unleash your creativity and turn you into a songwriter. The dynamic of the group will consist of weekly rehearsals like any other Performance Program, except that students will be given bit size compositional exercises that will become songs as the season progresses. As the songs take shape, students will arrange and rehearse their own tunes, ultimately culminating in a full end of season concert containing songs 100% written and performed by the students in the group.
ABBA vs The Bee Gees
Thursdays 6:30-8:30pm
You can dance, you can jive, but can you really feel the beat? Or are you ready for bold fashion choices? Ready to wear your most shimmering bell bottoms and show off your moves? If that is your vibe, ABBA vs. Bee Gees is a must go for you! Bring your disco ball, this show will bring together the two giant Disco Pop groups of the 70’s to offer pulsing rhythms, strong bass lines, and the iconic synthesizers. This unique musical genre is influenced by Funk, Soul, and Latin beats that will make you dance like the times of the discotheques! On one side you have the Bee Gees’ whose “Saturday Night Fever” album represented the turning of their careers earning them 5 Grammy Awards and making the group one of the biggest disco bands in the world during the 70s. On the other side, the Swedish band ABBA (called ABBA as an acronym of the initials of its members), kicked off their career with an immediate hit, “Waterloo”, in 1972 and quickly became one of the most renowned and commercially successful musical groups in history. Between Barry, Robin, Maurice, Agnetha, Björn, Benny, and Anni-Frid, you will be doing the hustle and getting down to “Stayin’ Alive”, “Saturday Fever”, “Dancing Queen”, “Fernando”, and many other hits.
Woodstock
Fridays 5:30-7:30pm
In 1969, almost half a million people made a pilgrimage to Yasgur’s Farm in upstate New York for three days of peace and music. Catapulting many iconic artists who played this landmark music festival into superstar status, Woodstock embodies the spirit of the 60s. It was a watershed moment for Rock and Roll, and this show celebrates the legendary, and very stylistically diverse, artists who promoted unity and embraced freedom of expression while performing at the festival. Songs by The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Janis Joplin, Sly & The Family Stone, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Grateful Dead and more make this show an exciting and well-balanced educational challenge for all instruments and experience levels!
Riot Grrrl
Saturdays 12:30-2:30pm
The Riot Grrrls are back! And they come with full power to revive the musical movement that emerged in the 90’s to fight sexism, promote gender equality, and female empowerment. Besides music, the movement also included art, activism, and community building. The movement started in the US with bands like Bikini Kill, Heavens to Betsy, Sleater-Kinney, Bratmobile, and so many more. These bands expressed their perspectives on important themes and social problems like domestic violence, identity, to name a few. Those bands carved out an important cultural space for themselves and for future generations of women in rock reaching international recognition and influencing the Punk scene around the world. In this show you will be challenged regardless of your skill level, as well as learn and improve important music fundamentals. Channel your inner Riot Grrrl, play loud, unapologetically, with confidence, and show the world what you are capable of!
A Note About Show Casting
We strive for well-balanced shows where all of our students are challenged and get equal opportunity for parts. Please understand that factors such as attendance at rehearsals, behavior at rehearsals, and musical preparation for rehearsals can affect the number of songs a student is assigned. The School of Rock method is merit based. While a show’s first casting is as equitable as possible, in subsequent castings we reward commitment, hard work, and steady improvement.
We know many students have talents beyond the instruments they study at School of Rock. We do our best to encourage (and show off) all of our students’ abilities! However, students who take lessons on an instrument at School of Rock get priority casting on that instrument in shows. Students are guaranteed to be assigned parts only on instruments they are actively taking lessons on at SoR. Depending on the makeup of the show’s cast, we may not be able to accommodate students who wish to perform on an instrument (including vocals) that they do not study at SoR. If your student is interested in studying an additional instrument, please reach out to us to discuss options.
