FAQ

How does School of Rock work?

Built on the patented School of Rock Method, our program is designed to turn students into confident, stage-ready performers. Students receive a weekly, 1-on-1 music lesson with our professional teachers to build technical mastery, followed by a weekly band rehearsal to develop ensemble playing and stage presence skills. Each season culminates in a professionally-staged show at a local venue, giving students the high-stakes experience in the spotlight they need to excel in their school, community or college auditions.

What instruments does School of Rock teach?

We provide elite instruction in Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drums, Keyboard/Piano, and Vocals. Because our faculty is composed of professional, working musicians, our students aren't just learning scales; they are gaining the technical mastery, tone, and gear knowledge required to hold their own in any professional setting.

Whether your child is prepping for a competitive school marching band, a community theater lead, or a college audition, our programs are designed to build the deep proficiency needed to be truly 'stage-ready.' We don't just teach an instrument—we develop the skills necessary for a lifetime of performance.

What ages does School of Rock teach?

We offer specialized performance tracks for every stage of development, from ages 6 through adult. Our programs are designed to grow with the student, moving them from foundational skills to elite performance mastery.

Ages 6-7 (Rookies): A high-energy introduction to music fundamentals where we build the curiosity and basic rhythm skills needed for future study.
Ages 8-11 (Rock 101): The gateway to the stage. Students begin 1-on-1 coaching with professional mentors and join their first rehearsals, focusing on foundational proficiency and the mechanics of playing in a band.
Ages 11-17 (Performance Program): This is our elite track where students 'find their tribe.' This program focuses on advanced repertoire and high-level stage presence, specifically preparing students for the rigors of community theater, school bands, and competitive college auditions.
Adult Program (18+): It is never too late to take the stage. Our Adult Program provides the same professional coaching and live performance opportunities in an environment tailored for grown-ups.

No matter the age, our goal is to provide a structured, mentor-led environment that builds the confidence and resilience students need to excel both on and off the stage.

Does School of Rock teach music theory?

Our song-first Method teaches Applied Theory, which is the 'secret weapon' for serious musicians. Instead of memorizing abstract rules, our students learn how music theory works within the context of the songs they are performing. This deep technical understanding is what prepares our students for competitive environments like All-State Orchestra, community theater leads, and college conservatory auditions. We don't just teach students how to play; we teach them how music works.

Is School of Rock good for beginners?

Absolutely. In fact, many of our most confident performers started here with zero experience. We specialize in taking the 'beginner's anxiety' and turning it into 'stage presence.' By focusing on songs they love and putting them in a supportive band environment early on, we build the technical proficiency and social confidence they need to nail their first show—and eventually, their first school or college audition.

Is School of Rock based on the movie of the same name?

It is actually the other way around! School of Rock was founded in 1998, five years before the film was released. The film's producers interviewed our founders about our revolutionary, song-first approach to music education and translated that methodology to the fictional public school setting seen in the movie.

My child is too shy to join a performance group.

We can help. School of Rock is MORE THAN A MUSIC SCHOOL - it's a place for kids and teens to shine, connect, belong, and be happy. In an independent study commissioned by School of Rock, 96.2% of parents reported noticeable progress in their child's self-confidence since they started attending, 95.9% of parents acknowledged improvement in their child's teamwork skills, and 80.4% reported that their children are happier since joining.*

*Disclosure: Independent survey administered from 4/26-5/7/2025. Data is self-reported experience of 1,443 parents of School of Rock students under age 18. Results intended for informational purposes only and do not constitute a guarantee of future outcomes.
