Owner Steve McFarland
Steve McFarland
Owner
Steve began his musical journey at age 16 playing along to bands like Kiss, Aerosmith, Van Halen, and Rush. Okay, it was air guitar, but he was a rocking pretender from an early age!

Steve wished School of Rock had been around when he was young. After seeing his children take endless lessons without motivation, the idea of getting kids on stage with School of Rock just made sense. Steve has a sports background and coached youth sports for many years, so the concept of School of Rock was natural to him: individual lessons (practice), group rehearsals (team practice), and the rock show (the game).

“I’ve always wondered why some people ‘make’ their kids take an instrument just because they think it’s a good idea to learn an instrument. You don’t hear of anyone making their kids take a sport and never playing on a team or in a game. Why make them take endless lessons with no chance to perform?”

As the owner, Steve challenges his team to enrich kids’ lives through music lessons, performances, camps or just hanging out with some new friends. Along with the School of Rock in Zionsville, IN, Steve also owns two additional School of Rock locations in Indiana and a location in each of South Carolina and Wisconsin.
General Manager Nicholas Wichman
Nicholas Wichman
General Manager
Nick started playing drums at the age of 10 and has never been more passionate about anything since. Due to a serious medical condition that developed at an early age, he had to drop out of school to focus on his health. During this difficult time, Nick turned to drumming as his primary coping skill and literally played 6-8 hours a day for several years. In addition, he studied under local drumming virtuoso Tony Medeiros for a decade and with national jazz legend Rob Dixon for three years at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music; Nick remains good friends with both of them to this day.

Nick has participated in many different drumming events through the years, from playing many local jazz gigs at the Chatterbox and The Jazz Kitchen to making it to the regional finals in the Guitar Center Drum-Off competition three years in a row. He also made it as a top 100 finalist in the 18-and-under category for the Modern Drummer Undiscovered Drummer competition two years in a row which receives thousands of submissions from all around the world.

When Nick discovered the amazing music program at School of Rock, he applied for a drum instructor position at the Zionsville location, which he held for just over a year before being promoted to Assistant General Manager at the Fishers location. He is back at the Zionsville location to lead the school as General Manager. Though Nick now serves the school in a managerial role, he still gets to share his love of music and drumming with every student who comes through the door and he couldn’t be happier!

Guitar Teacher Christopher Mizell
Christopher Mizell
Guitar Teacher
Chris Mizell has been playing guitar since 1986. He picked up guitar along with a childhood friend who started on bass, forming a band that wrote and performed original music at Montgomery County High Schools. The '90s brought a change to the music scene, but that did not deter Chris from forming yet another original musical outfit, this time in the Virginia Beach area. His band, Job’s Comfort, brought back the guitar solo to audiences on the beach strip that loved the sound of AIC, Tool, and Type O Negative, but included the added excitement that “old school” guitar flash.

Sometime later, Chris returned to Indiana and found work as a contracted lead guitarist for Northview Church and Cornerstone Lutheran Church in Carmel. He is currently working on a new hard rock project as well as joining the team at the School of Rock in Zionsville as an electric guitar instructor.

Chris has a wide variety of influences including Randy Rhoads, George Lynch, Yngwie Malmsteen, Waddy Wachtel, Neal Schon, John Sykes, and many others. He hopes to be an inspiration to his students at the School of Rock in Zionsville in the same way that his influences have always inspired him!

Makieya has been singing since she discovered the natural ability to do it so well! Originally inspired by learning classic children’s tunes in preschool and kindergarten, Makieya always found joy in making music and educating through song. She began to join school ensembles at age 9, trying her hand at many instruments, including the trumpet, guitar, and drums.

Eventually, Makieya learned that singing was her true passion. She spent her secondary schooling years performing in musicals, show choirs, and choral ensembles of varying sizes and styles. She later went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Music Production at Ball State University, where she received a thorough education on Western Classical Music and Performance, as well as knowledge of contemporary styles and modern audio engineering techniques.

Reviews

What I like about the program is that my kids LOVE it!

This is so different from the music lessons that existed when I was a kid. These kids are actually making music and learning to play as a band. The performances are so impressive, and watching the kids gain confidence and express themselves on stage is priceless.

The structure around how kids learn is amazing.

Taking lessons to learn an instrument is one thing, but learning how to be a part of a band is on another level. These kids are learning how to communicate, respect people and their opinions, and how to be accountable for themselves. It’s more than just music here.

It's the best music program in the city.

Dedicated instructors and staff, vibrant atmosphere, and most importantly, it's fun! My 8-year-old has grown leaps and bounds in skill and personal confidence. If you're thinking about checking it out, don't wait, just do it!

The kids have a great time while learning to play.

Lifelong skills and relationships are born here. The staff shares their passion for music and are very professional and accommodating. Wish I had this type of exposure to music when I was growing up!

Playing with a group makes all the difference.

The staff is very friendly and supportive. I believe playing with a group makes all the difference. The private lessons are awesome as well but that in combination with being responsible for your part in a band teaches them so much more. Great job School of Rock!

School of Rock teaches our child to be a well-rounded musician.

We love that School of Rock teaches our child to be a well-rounded musician. Not only does he learn to excel at his instrument but he also learns what it’s like to play music as a group. We love the staff and are so grateful for all that they do for our child and for the school.

School of Rock is inclusive, diverse, fosters community, and keeps things positive.

We love that School of Rock is inclusive, diverse, fosters community, and keeps things positive. The teaching method is great and the instructors are well educated in music and highly talented. My daughter is safe and taught with care and that’s extremely important to me.

My girls always look forward to their lessons.

I love how the kids get a one-on-one lesson but also a class where they learn how to play in a band. My girls have loved being part of this group. They always look forward to their lessons.
